A very good way to normally water plants in the garden (not in pots), especially young plants is to use a normal size plastic bucket and drill a hole about 4mm in the bottom at one side. Fill the bucket with water and sit it next to the plant. The water will very slowly empty into the soil and give the plant a very deep watering. Plants love deep watering because that's where their roots are. A deep watering is much better than a few shallow waterings, especially in summer when shallow waterings will mostly evaporate.
Found out today that my plants (gifted to me by my grandfather before he died) survived two months with this method. I am so happy about it, thank you so much for the tip

Going on vacation next month and looked up how to water plants while away. It led me here. Now my girlfriend doesn't have to worry about all her plants dying. Thanks!!
Thank you for the video 👍 This method is based on so called "Capillary action" and works very well so the sun doesn't have to warm the bottle. I gave water with this kind of method to my grape tree for 6 weeks. I just used bigger 10 liter bottles. Tree survived 2 months without my irrigation.
Thanks for the tip - it works, but some bottles are better than others I think. As an experiment I tried 0.5 litre water bottles in 2 baby carrot seedling boxes (18 inches by 9 inches and 9 inches deep), left for 4 days (3 nights) on my balcony which gets the sun in the morning and early afternoon. I live in a warm climate, in the Philippines. I put 2 bottles in each box, each bottle had 2 small holes near the centre of the cap. One bottle had a shallow neck, maybe 1cm long, the other maybe 3cm. in each container. The longer neck bottles were about 75% used up whilst the shallow necks had hardly drained at all (if at all). When I removed the bottles the soil at depth was lovely and moist and the seedlings were in perfect condition in both containers. We are going away again this week and I'll repeat, with the longer necked bottles; this time I'll try 4 holes versus 2 holes - I'll report back here if I get any useful results. BTW I think the softer bottles buckle too easily and inhibit the osmosis effect - I had soft bottles on 2 baby shrubs and hardly any water was used, maybe a few cc at most. Cheers.
I'm not going on vacation, but I'm going to try this anyway. I live in an arid climate and it got up to 43 C last year. This method should help my plants stay healthy between watering. Thank you. Jon in rural BC, Canada
Canada and dry? which part? there is a drink called canada dry. I do this method for years for few plants.. and wick method google it.. put a natural fabric, cotton, or natural little rope, in a bottle place it higher a bit than the plant, place the other end of the rope to the soil, coiling it. this will always work..see my other longer post here for more details.
Great video! Really helped with my plants. btw.: the needle doesn't have to be hot. Just lay the bottle cap on something soft, like old cardboard, and hit the needle with a hammer through the plastik into the soft thing below.

I put two 1 gallon buckets filled with water next to my plants, put some string between the buckets and of my pots (peppers and basils). Covered the buckets with plastic bags and went on vacation. Came home a little over a month later and the plants were still thriving, the peppers even flowering.
That is cool! I wish I had known that last year. I had asked someone to water my plants and they let them die. I will remember to keep bottles for when I go on vacation next time. Thank you for sharing your brilliant idea!

I'm not trying to be rude, but it's really not good to say when you'll be away from your home, especially if you're using your full name. Anyone can Google your name and possibly get your address.
I am going to 4 weeks trip. Have lots of plants on my balcony, will try this and come back here to add what happened with plants. I have desert roses and cacti, they don’t need much water but I live in a dessert and now is way too hot even for succulent plants. See you in a month! Wish me luck
I have been doing that for years, I do that in my garden for small plants, specially new ones. From my experience on this, if you do like that some times it work and other times it doesn't or more accurately only one third of the bottle is empty .. I think the reason is the way you place it on the dirt, sometimes the whole is blocked by the dirt ground. Now if you dig little tiny hole up it will work fine but a faster, a liter lasted 5 days in hot summer 44c 110f approx. either that or make a one big hole in the cap only the size i use is the cross screw driver or as big as lentil hole. this video solution may work only if you are inspecting them well before leaving , making sure that that the holes are not blocked by dirt you need to observe the level of water moving down.. You can put a big old kettle with water, soak any long strip of cotton from old clothes in the neck of the kettle, and run it through the neck holes to the bottom of the kettle (inside it), let the other end of the strip close to the root of the plant. Make sure the kettle level higher a bit than the plant soil, so it would ensure the dripping. this method always works! Always! except if the cloth, or the natural rope fiber become so old that it loses its absorption ability... for even better result you buy use small rope made of natural fiber. if you are leaving for longer, use big 5 liter plastic bottle, or 10 etc.. Cover the top part of the kettle with its lid to avoid evaporation . that is why 12 liter kettle (there are for parties, or restaurant..). Hope this help
I'm guessing you're not referring to electric kettle, yet to see a 12 litre one in the market. But sounds like a good idea with the cloth, would the soak up fabric causes molds and bacteria growth?
Thank you so much for your wonderful and so simple advice! I just looove it! I am going on a vacation in a few days and I was concerned about some of my plants. I will follow your advice and let you know how they are doing when I come back.
Great looking method! Doing a pilot test right now on the mint pot to see how it will go and to find out how many holes i should make. I think i made too many bc the water seems to go kinda fast. Stay tuned
I have used bottles in my garden to help keep it watered well. I have sloping garden beds with some runoff problems. I bury bottles (right side up) up to the top of the neck, with holes in the sides all around and a piece of stocking over the neck to keep soil out. I fill them to the top, multiple times, with the hose, and all that water now filters into the soil instead of running off. I will be adding long pieces of pvc pipe the same way, to deeply water. Much quicker too, than the "shower" setting on the spray nozzle.
Thank you so much for such a helpful video! I'm testing this out before I go on vacation, but I noticed that some of my bottles empty out overnight and some only lose a little bit of water. Some of my potted plants have two bottles, and one bottle was empty while the other one was still very full. Can you tell my why some of the bottles are draining faster? I moved the plants out of direct sun to see if that slows things down. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
The water flow speed depends on the size of the holes too, they should be small. Also the type of soil. Testing it before is very good to see what works better for you.
This should work for most plants except for ones like the Easter and Christmas cactus due to the amount of water they require at a time also due to the fact that they want to be route down there wouldn’t be enough room to put the bottle. The same would go for any other route bound plants I would have to assume.
Wish I had watched this before buying an adjustable drip spike (luckily I only bought one). From some of the comments, I think I've found my solution for watering plans whilst I'm away for a week.
hi, i am so glad i came across your video, finally what i was looking for. now id like to know, i have a south facing space which dries all plants when its hot. i normally water them when i think they need it, now you mentioned about placing them into the containers, how long would a large size bottle last, as im abit worried all my hard work will be destroyed. thank you for sharing. by the way im partially sighted and you made it easy to watch.
if long time away from home, the little bottle water is not enough. autoamtic drip watering kit for pots can water plants as the settings on vcation every day every hour.this is the best choice and what we need
This is a fantastic idea. I do something similar with the squeezy sauce bottles but the water flows too quickly. I am doing this for my next holiday as I have just planted a heap of new plants and so don't want them to be struggling with the Aussie heat.
I have a couple of chili plants here that now during the Cretan summer need water every day, preventing me from going anywhere. This was the random video Google showed when googling 'diy bottle watering system' and it's made by someone in the same country! 🙂 Now how to make a miniaturised version of this... My plants are in small 0.5-1 litre yoghurt and taxini buckets so they remain portable (this winter they'll get their upgrade..), so the 1.5litre bottles don't really fit next to the plant. Hmm... 🤔 Ah! (live thinking here hehe), if the bottle can't t go to the soil, then I make the soil go to the bottle! Lots of scrap from the olive irrigation hoses here, it could just work to use it to 'extend' the pot, even to extend it with a curve and to let capillary action do the rest. Ευχαριστώ φίλε! You just saved my summer! 😀
Thanks a lot for this! I knew there had to be a DIY solution for vacation watering like this! Hoping this will keep our plants alive while we are gone for a week.

Oh my goodness this will definitely help!! No need to worry while on my trip. Thank you
Thank you so much for your wonderful and so simple advice! I just looove it! I am going on a vacation in a few days and I was concerned about some of my plants. I will follow your advice and let you know how they are doing when I come back.
thank you for the visual, simplicity and clarity.
Thank you, will definitely give that a try - looks like a great solution
Thank you so much. I'll try this method next time I'll go on holiday 👍
Great looking method! Doing a pilot test right now on the mint pot to see how it will go and to find out how many holes i should make. I think i made too many bc the water seems to go kinda fast. Stay tuned
So 8 holes is too much. The water was gone after a few hours. Trying again with only 2 holes
Same result with two holes. I think i might be doing it wrong... Or the system is flawed.
Make the holes small with a small needle. It works
Great idea. My herbs are too thirsty for those little watering globes so this should work great.
Nice sharing friend
Solid, bruh! Thank you. I will try this before I go to my brothers for a week and then do it again while I am away.
Thank you very much dear friend, I'm just planning a little trip and now I have a solution
Cool 👻
Thank you for this video...this is the simplest solution yet the most elegant. I will try this next time we go away!
Thank you! 😊
I've been looking at a few videos on this topic. Yours is very easy to follow and suits the best to my situation. Thank you.
Genius! What an amazingly simple and practical invention. I'll let you know how my plants fare this week!
Thank you very much, I owe you my gratitude and my plants owe you their lives and health 🙏🙏💚💚
And btw you got a new fan
@@samman9478 thank you! :)
People who have given thumbs down are the friends who normally get paid to water the plants, now they are jobless
I need this for this summer. Thank u.
hi, i am so glad i came across your video, finally what i was looking for.
now id like to know, i have a south facing space which dries all plants when its hot. i normally water them when i think they need it, now you mentioned about placing them into the containers, how long would a large size bottle last, as im abit worried all my hard work will be destroyed.
thank you for sharing. by the way im partially sighted and you made it easy to watch.
Thanks for video. I am going away for long weekend and a going to try his. Well done.
if long time away from home, the little bottle water is not enough. autoamtic drip watering kit for pots can water plants as the settings on vcation every day every hour.this is the best choice and what we need
Thanks for the very easy-to-follow video. Will try this for my new balcony garden!
A great solution to my problem. Thanks for the tip.
I will give it a try, as we are in dry season, no rain for 3 months now.
Oh my! This is brilliant! You just saved my tomatoes!
Best tutorial for this method, thank you.
Now how to make a miniaturised version of this...
Nice plan! You could try to use a timer and then you set the watering interval. There are small timers for this. Video in pinned comment.
Much needed solution. I'm going on a vacation for 25 days.. Hope this works
For that long use a timer unless your plants don't need much water and it's not very hot.
Thanks a lot for this! I knew there had to be a DIY solution for vacation watering like this! Hoping this will keep our plants alive while we are gone for a week.
Thank you Sarah! 👻
Did it work?
It worked perfectly and I moved my caladium out of the sun just to help a bit more. I used two 2 litre bottles in each pot.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
I will try this; thanks for the suggestion!
Can't wait to try this. I was about to spend $15 on water globes but rather keep that money.
Yeah 😬 no need to buy any ridiculous gadgets. 😅 This works perfectly. 👻
I did this years ago with two liter bottles in my tomato garden never had a problem
Excellent methods! Thank you very much!
Thank you. Very helpful tip. I regret not finding your vlog at once. It might save my plants from dying. New subscriber here.
Thank you! 😀
Easy. Practical. Cheap. Thank you.
Thankyou for wonderful technic for plants
Thank You Going on Vac and want to save my plants. Great tip

Me too lol
As will I! Happy 4th of July, be safe!
