I have made cold brew tea for long time and I usually add orange slices to my cold brew black tea, and peaches to green tea. they give the tea so much better taste, you must try that guys :)
I recommend personally using green teas for cold brewing tea. My mother often keeps high quality black tea since we're Indian and we like good tea to use for making chai. I experimented a little bit with cold brewing black tea and the flavor wasn't there for me. Green teas are so light that cold brewing will still retain a lot of the flavor that you want out of it.
Bags to water ratio is what I was looking for. Odd that was not covered, but the brevity of the video is appreciated. You could have stretched it out to 12 minutes like so many others. Thank you
I was also looking for this specific info. he says 8 cups of water and it looks like 8 tea bag’s so he’s just going 1 bag per cup. i’m going for a concentrate so I’m going to try 4 bags per cup.
@@djestouff you been sticking with 1 bag per 8oz or how dense are you making your concentrate? And then how much water do you add to the concentrate when making a batch?
I only knew about the cold brew method because I read a comic titled "Duchess' 50 tea recipes" and I just had to ensure that it is true lol. All my life I've only ever brewed hot tea and then added some ice cubes to get a cold tea. NEVER AGAIN!
I've never use cold water to make tea in my life but just now I was too lazy to put in ice cubes so I just used ice cold water and it got me like hold awn how come i never knew about something so simple like this before. I can't beleive the same tea could taste different just because of the water temperature
I used to love making green tea and pour it over ice, but lately the taste has been so off to me. I never knew this was an option - definitely going to give it a try!
Green tea is easy to 'burn' and turn bitter. Cold brew green tea is amazing. no bitter, it's just smooth all the way down. Black tea as well. It can become quite bitter quite easily because the hot water is just too hot. cold brew takes the entire problem out of the equasion. It's fantastic.
I have two 2-quart pitchers. The clear one goes out on the porch to sit in the sun for 3-5 hours. The white one goes in the fridge overnight. I get scores of different kinds of tea from a food bank, many of them herbal teas. I'll often pick 6-7 different flavors, all containing cinnamon, or maybe orange or apple, to steep together. (My current craze is peppermint, spearmint, candy cane lane, and peppermint bark) Add a bit of sugar and pour over ice. Perfect to sit on the porch with, especially in the wave of 100+ degree weather we've been getting.
This is great when you want to enjoy a nice cup of iced tea without any added sugar ! But take a note guys, if someone has a diarrhea, stomach pain, bacteria in the intestine, or even stomach ulcer, Tannins are a great solution for that . Which you can find them in tea (they are the bitter compounds) and in pomogranate flesh (the yellow part) . We've been using pomogranates for ages here to treat diarrhea.
I'll try this with my green tea. I don't mind the bitterness in my black tea but not the green so I rarely drink it. This would be good for keeping the bitterness away.
I put mine in the middle tube of the fruit diffuser pitcher. I added cut-up orange slices. I used soursop tea because I need to drink it due to them finding some lumps in my breast tissue. I'm too lazy to boil tea. I don't really like it that much. Soursop/Graviola tea has a very mild taste. It's like drinking infused water.
Max Falkowitz once said cold brew did well for lighter teas though even though he has great articles on tea sorts (white, green, oolong, black and puerh) and he may cover infusions though I have not read his site on those, I think he is wrong there as blacks actually do quite well on the cold brew if you want a full bodied tea. I have left them in the fridge when left over from the pot and got a surprisingly tasty result. Earl grey, darjeeling, lapsang souchong and specialty blacks like Ceylons/ Nilgiri and a few loose leaf other smooth ones do wonderfully. My father has one called Los Andes which works well that way. Builders brew is not what I am talking about here though, unless you want to make it sweet it will hold up to sugar or milk and it is not true that having the latter in an iced tea will never make it good, although it depends whether you like adding things to it or not
I would have freaked out if this video was more than 2min, like "what the heck you want to understand people, it's a COLD BREW TEA. Take your TEA and put in in a COLD water to BREW Period". Love it !
I wish there's an explanation why doing a cold brew would prevent the bitter taste from coming compared to when using hot water. Also, will this affect the nutritional value of the tea?
Similar to brewing coffee, hot water extracts more flavor compounds but some of those compounds can be bitter. Cold brewing is much slower and doesn't force these bitter compounds out of the tea or coffee, whichever you are brewing. So you get a much smoother result. Cold brewing also is far less acidic. Hope this helps. :)
Hot water essentially means more molecular movements. The molecules vibrate vigorously, therefore, causes an extraction of unwanted flavors such as caffeine and etc.. Also, a hot temperature can "cook" the leaves which can change the flavor of the tea than is intended.
I believe it will not affect the health benefit of the tea if you're talking about the antioxidative properties of tea. Common antioxidants found in tea such as ascorbic acid has a thermal stability of 90C so unless you're drinking boiling tea, it probably won't affect the healthy properties of your tea.
it's mostly up to preference. I have a 1gal pitcher that I use and I put 10 bags in mine. It's a little stronger, which is how I like it. 8 seems to be the golden rule for a gallon. So that's.... 16 cups in a gallon... 1 bag per 2 cups of cold water. And adjust according to your preference. fewer bags will yeild a softer flavor, more bags, richer. It's all preference. Also, this is very forgiving. Let's say you do 6 bags and oh no it's too watery.... well...just add 2 more bags and stick it back in the fridge. tomorrow it'll be all set. You can always add more so when it doubt, start light and adjust to your liking.
There's a bit more to it for coffee (mainly the straining process), but yes cold brew coffee is a thing and it's delicious! He actually did a Kitchen Conundrums on it last year around this time, so if you search RUclips you should find it!
this is great and all and I liked the video 😁😀but............😄1 problem is........ cold brew works best only with bottled or distilled water 😦💧💧u can't use it with tap water it will taste funny that why I stick to hot brewing my tea boil the water 1st and then putting it in the refrigerator overnight. works everytime.
Cold you just leave tea bags in room temperature water , instead of putting in fridge to brew before you add to fridge? Also whats the best way to sweetened cold tea because I know sugar hard to dissolve in cold liquid!
thats how i like my tea. just dump the tea bag and let it dilute its flavor in the water. i like to add some slices of lemon or fruits just for the heck of it too! and a little simple sugar...works for me. better than kool aid
quick question. will it have all the beneficial of a regular brewed tea? for example: green tea is good for your metabolism. is it the same case with cold brewed one?
Yes, it will. Studies have actually shown, that cold brewing actually extracts MORE components, than regular brewed tea. In fact, regular brewing destroys some of the tea components due to the high temperatur of the water. Dr.Michael Greger has mentioned it in his book 'how not do die'. Hope that helps.
I wasn't sure either, but I figure you can always dilute with more water, so it's best to start with it as strong as possible. Also doing it that way you could make up larger amounts using smaller/less containers.
They posted a dead link but I nosed around online and it's supposed to be 8 tea bags for 8 cups of water for an overnight chill in the fridge tea. I've tried it and it works great!

How can one flavor the ice-brew tea with, say, lemon, using this overnight process, in a way that it doesn't become bitter or with that stale flavor of "overnight" lemon? I reckon putting the lemon with the tea so they both infuse the water gives it a distinct lemon taste, but the lemon itself gets kinda...yucky ahaha
the reason it becomes bitter with lemon overnight is because of the lemon rind. If you dont want that, peel the skin of the lemon or zest it, without the white lemon rind, as well as the juice of the lemon.
I knew about the white rind thing, but did not occur to me I could peel it of or just use the zests instead of whole wedges! Thanks for the tip! The syrup idea is great as well! Shouldn't you cover it? Because the liquid could suck up odors in the fridge (in case you've anything else stored such as meat).
