    - "Why was I seeing double" That was his brother, Rob Walker
    - Shamylan's design is based on Korra's first villain, Amon

    Answering some duck curiosities!
3:20 - You saw double because that's Doug's brother, Rob!
17:39 - The budget for Last Airbender was (make sure you're sitting down for this one) $150,000,000...
17:45 - Hayao Miyazaki is one of the most well-known directors in anime and co-founder of Studio Ghibli (one of the top anime studios).
19:12 - The Happening was a "psychological thriller" from 2008, directed by Shyamalan, that was absolutely DEMOLISHED by audiences and critics for being bland and poorly acted. Basically a high-budget B-movie without the fun.
20:54 - Paul Giamatti is an actor. Heavy-set with a receding hairline. The kid in close-up looks like a young version of him with no facial hair.
21:54 - Dr. Claw is the villain of Inspector Gadget, who you never got to see outside of his right arm/hand. His actual appearance was never revealed in the original animated show.
22:23 - Biggus Dickus is a character in Monty Python's Life of Brian, played by the late Graham Chapman
39:40 - Doug is the Critic.
39:47 - They actually do have a few behind-the-scenes videos from some of their reviews. They're a fun watch.

8:45 - Yeah, I think it's a live action TV series. I wouldn't get my hopes up though. Apparently, the show's creators walked away from the project because they didn't like the direction it was being taken. Also, The Last Airbender is the movie that convinced me that M. Night Shamylon is a talentless hack that got lucky with a handful of movies and turned that into a career. Even the most sh*t director can get lucky once or twice, and I feel like it's not an exaggeration to say that's what happened with Shamylon.

The names were pronounced differently, but I believe they took the more Japanese way of pronouncing it. For me, I always saw this as a bad adaptation but I didn't start hating it until I came across a quote that Shyamalan had in an interview as to why people didn't like the movie. This isn't the exact quote but it's the basic idea of it
"You can either make it for 8 year olds or you can throw in a ton of sex jokes and gore so that it's for adults. I chose to make it for 8 year olds"
That line makes it clear this man did not understand the show because it was made for 8 year olds but adults still enjoyed it. The majority of the Avatar fanbase was adults. In fact people didn't think ATLA would catch on because it was so smart. This show proved that making something for children was not an excuse not to be good. What's bizarre is that plenty of creators were realizing that when the show was going on and were making smarter and ground breaking shows and movies for children. Shyamalan seemed to be weirdly behind the times and I have no idea why he was given as much control over the film as he was.
In the same interview I came across it was revealed that the show creators were supposed to work on the movie with him, but had a falling out when he wouldn't listen to them. That's all you need to know about how he treated this project that he said he was such a big fan of

not really a funfact but: In the Movie version every bending style needed the element in a form "near" the bender like the firebender couldnt shoot fire, they need like a campfire near them to controll the fire thats why zuko carried the torch at the north pol , thats why even aang needed to make so much moves to "make" air and thats why even the earth bender couldnt bend the "earth" they here more like rock benders.

One of the worst changes this movie made (which says a lot, I know). It kind of kills the moment when all the firebenders run around with torches, meanwhile they all freak out when Iroh shoots fire from his hands. It really says something about an adaptation where something even your garden variety mook can do in the original is seen as something impossible. What would they have done if they did adapt the other books. How would Azula's lightning bending work like this? Would she need to always be in a thunderstorm to do her most iconic power? Because that's not lightning bending anymore, that's just the technique Iroh taught Zuko to reflect it. I shudder at how bad the final battle with the fire lord would've looked with this

The duo known as Brike went on to make Korra, which isn't as good as the original show. Especially if you're a lore nerd like me, because there are SO MANY RETCONS.
However, the lead writer of the show, Aaron Ehasz, went on to create the Netflix series called The Dragon Prince, which is like the polar opposite of Korra. Honestly, while I think NC's review of this is good, the BEST review of _The Last Airbender_ is by the RUclips channel *Hello Future Me.*
He literally made a 2 and a half hour video called *_"The Last Airbender Is The Worst Film Ever Made. Here's Why."_* And he broke down in explicit detail why the film failed on practically every level of being a film as well as being an adaptation.
I think the best thing he said on why it's a horrible adaptation is it felt less like a failure in intention but more a failure of method. Because it's like Shyamalan actually tried to make an honest attempt to adapt the show into a movie, but everything about the movie that related to the show was all surface-level; it's recognizable but without all the purpose that made these moments meaningful. And it's like Shyamalan thought we fans of the show would love the movie because we would recognize the moments he tried to implement into the plot.
So, that's the thing about good adaptations. They have to do more than just follow the plot and bring life to the world of the source material. They also have to capture the meaning of the story; its thematic ideas.
Which is why I HATE the _Percy Jackson_ movies. They not only *BARELY* followed the plot of the books, but they didn't even try to capture what made the books special to begin with. They only focused on the aspects of the books that were like _Harry Potter_ and NOTHING ELSE.

…Legend of Korra is a… mixed bag for me. It was only meant to have one season until it got really popular and they gave it three more seasons.
Book 1 is alright, but my God, the love story plot line is just atrocious and I hate it.
The first half of Book 2 is great, but the second half is embarrassingly bad, jumbling up their own lore that they established in ATLA, and a season finale that really does not fit in with the series overall.
The third book is the strongest in my opinion, having a lot of great moments, but that doesn’t take away the fact that the villains have an idiotic philosophy that I just cringe at a lot of the time.
The fourth book I cannot stand, mostly because I actually agree with the villain most of the time. The only reason they’re categorized as a villain is because other characters say so, as if the protagonists are always right and anyone who’s against them is automatically evil.
That’s not even getting into the characters themselves (Korra in particular being an annoying, self-entitled brat who experiences little development over the four seasons), but I’ve rambled on long enough.
As much as I kinda like some of LoK, I cannot recommend it unless you’re willing to turn your brain off for a long period of time.

It wasnt a licensing thing, it was Copyright.
James Camerons movie "Avatar" came out the year before The Last Airbender and Cameron holds the copyright.
Im not sure at all how it works but I assume that a copyright only holds in its own genre.
    In this case movies.
Otherwise The Last Airbender would have it as the series came before the Cameron movie.
There is probably also some sub-section of laws and exceptions dealing with titles that are actual words.
If I make a movie named "Camping" I cant sue someone the magazine name "Camping", nor could they sue me.
You cant monopolize an actual word.
But you also cant name your movie something another movie is already called.
Partly to avoid confusion and partly to prevent scam artists from pawning off subpar crap by riding the coat tails of a blockbuster.
The fact that The Last Airbender is a series and Avatar is a movie is probably enough to delineate.

Kyle, you should absolutely watch Legend of Korra. Full disclosure I hated the show the first couple times I tried to watch it, but for some reason I kept watching and eventually I came to love it. I think it has a lot to do with my age at the time. When I watch Korra, I'm not empathizing with Team Avatar but I see myself in the secondary characters a lot. There is a RUclipsr named Lily Orchard and she has a really entertaining video critique called "The Legend of Korra is Garbage and Here's Why". So even if you end up hating the show, it will still be worth watching just so you can hear Lily tear it to shreds.

Honestly some name pronunciations I can get behind. The only idea of Shyamalan I personally like though know to be bad commercially wise at that time. I mean the names we're used to are said in English way of doing. Like Iroh (iron). Iro is closer to Japanese. It's just because ATLA & Korra aren't anime and therefore Japanese originally we dislike it, because if it were the names were used to are like an English Dub.
Aang pronunciation Shyamalan wanted to sound Asian. Ong or Ung is the proper Chinese way of saying it apparently. Problem is they say it differently across the movie. So he fails himself in it's goal. But Shyamalan thought if he went against Asian culture he thought they would spot it and flame him for it. He underestimated people so used to original names - correct or not, popular is what matters - makes you get hated by entire community deviating from it.

  • @thevarietychannelofyoutube4769

Did Shaymalan think that people in 2010 were so racist that they needed the villains to have dark skin and the heroes to be white even when they werent white in the show?
