A TSA agent once told me to put my wallet, watch small valuables in a ziplock plastic bag and it goes at the bottom of my purse which is in my bag. That means it will take too long to steal from it on the line. And the zippers are safety pinned closed. Anything to make it harder to undo
Good tip. When I fly I make sure to put the stuff from my pockets into something else and not just put in the bin because in many airports, you no longer have line of sight with your stuff while it's on the conveyor belt.
I am suspicious of having to place wallets and purses in the security trays. Wife had cash taken from her purse by a distracting security woman at Manchester UK. Bored security staff take a rise out of passengers by moving property from one tray and placing it in another. You think you used two trays but your kit is now spread over three. Tablet pc was in a tray going through but missing on the pickup area. Asked where it was and got a shrug of the shoulders. Argued the point and got nowhere. On return from trip we recovered it from ‘lost’ property. Had to pay a fee for return of our own stuff. We hate Manchester, fortunately Liverpool is the alternative airport.
@@davidk3729Neighbor had his iPad Pro swiped last year in the tsa line. We always thought it was another passenger, never thought it would be the tsa themselves.
That’s what I do
What’s to stop someone from just taking the whole ziplock bag? 🥴
I always keep all bags locked when going thru screening. If tsa wants to look inside they must call me over and look inside while i watch
Great advice!
I thought they cut the lock?
Another great idea! Im loving these tips
Both in Boston and San Antonio last August TSA had you unlock bags before sending thru. Still zipped but unlocked. Most of the thefts I have hears about were from purses or things put in the boxes like watches.
I only unlock when i and they are standing there. out of my sight i never have them unlocked and was never asked by any tsa employee to scan them unlocked and i have travelled thru over 20 usa and many foreign apts, so i think their request or demand may be illegal @@mary-ruthflores4107
Happened to me in Orlando. Used two trays one had my carry-on and shoes, the other my hand bag. While waiting to collect, I got the one with the carry on and shoes but not the one with my handbag. I spun around and found they had put the other tray on another track and I just was just in time to catch a female TSA agent unzipping my handbag I shouted at her and she sheepishly rezipped my bag. I am so sorry I did not report her. I was lucky that day nothing was taken but I will be very cautious in future,
By reporting, we save others from losing their valuables as well. We should never feel hesitant to report.
I would never have thought someone would do this , I will be more careful from now on. Thanks for the heads up
Yes! We are traveling internationally this summer. Now I know how to protect us.
TSA employees and the word “bright” have never been used in the same sentence before
My experience: I reported the theft of money from my wallet to TSA. I received “additional screening” for every flight I took for the next two years.
So they scare victims into never doing it again. I bet TSA theft is a team effort.
They can scan me how many times they want, I'll still report you for theft or attempt!
BS
Good advice. I go a step further. I stop long before getting in line, at a chair or similar. I make sure everything is inside my carryon or personal item AND I LOCK the zippers. I don't know why everyone doesn't do this. I get remarked on sometimes. Last week a guy looked at my multiple locks and said, "Wow, Fort Knox." I said, "You're right."
Men should take off metallic belts, phone, wallet, etc. and LOCK them inside backpack or personal item. There's plenty of opportunity to put them back on, after the security process.
I may need to do this myself. Thank you for the tip.
Čime zaključavanje svoje stvari,
What type lock you use?
@@savannahbrown5722 Either a very small combination lock or a very small locking carabiner that I buy at Eddie Bauer.
It all goes down the drain when TSA decides you're public enemy #1 & you end up being pulled aside 20+ feet from your stuff for at least ten minutes. I lost favorite jewelry pieces.
I always wear fake jewelry. Sterling silver wedding rings, cubic zirconia earrings. I will NEVER wear good jewelry through security. And even then, I keep my eye on things. My husband and I work as a team. One goes through and the other grabs the other’s goods.
I travel solo and hate going through the X-Ray machines as they always seem to find something on my heels or my back. I don't wear jewelry or other metallic items, pockets are empty and take every precaution I know but can't avoid being pulled out for being patted down. They never find anything. I got pre-check so I only have to go through metal detectors but lately, it's happening even with the metal detectors. I'm so frustrated as I don't want my items left unattended for some wild goose chase that ends up being a waste of time for the agents and me. I don't have this issue in foreign airports as I have to use X-Ray machines. So frustrating.
In the US, there is a weird exception for solid gold items on international flights, particularly coins. Aside from ensuring they don't exceed the maximum value of wealth crossing the borders, you are expected to declare them before arriving at the airport. Even then, they still can be seized and once that happens, the recovery bureaucracy can exceed the cost of the currency. I think this is only for gold and is justified by some 1930s era presidential executive orders.
Legalized theft @@timothylegg
I had a TSA agent in Texas steal from my personal item. He supposedly had to inspect it by hand and took it to another area I could not see easily. When I tried to stretch my neck to see what he was doing, his female TSA accomplice did no allow me to look at what he was doing. She ordered for me to look ahead.
You have rights to keep your goods in plain sight.
me too .. my jewelry stolen .. they purposely separate U fm Ur purse ‘n carry on . their cameras and lost ‘m found is a joke.
Avoid Houston airport. I went there twice, and I will avoid it on the future. The first time, the TSA search agent went through my jewelry case. What did she expect to find in a pencil case sized pouch? At least, she didn't take it out of sight. The second time the agents took all my items out of sight for quite some time. Before that they ran it through the x-ray machine four times. I was desperate. In the end he returned my stuff after he found a bottle opener. There was no other traveler around, and the rest of the employees pretended not to notice anything. Avoid Houston.
Immediately call a supervisor. You have the right to keep your property in plain sight.
Yup... mine in San Antonio..and how it was done was a dizziness event
For valuables like wallet, passport, watch, mobile phone, I use the following item. Heavy duty A4 zipper bag, which I do some modifications.
Modifications, include, punching a hole at where the zip locks the bag, get some steel punch rings, and put them in place. use security wire, and thread the wire through the punch how, and zipper hole, and then finally lock bag with a pad lock.
So all the items above can be seen by the security officer, but no one can open the zipper bag, additional measure to make sure no passenger walks away with zipper bag. Secure second security wire to my brightly colored bag, and then I watch the bag
Always check if all your valuables are there after the check. I have always a bad feeling when I have to put my valuables in the tray
Good and timely advice - thank you! We will be modifying our approach to airport security in future.
Good stuff.
I go through airport security almost every work day (sad, ... I know). ...Canadian, US, Central and South America. All my stuff, phone, wallet, passport, boarding pass .. gets LOCKED into my work case. Also have kevlar safety boots (no metal) and all plastic buckle belt (and TSApre/Nexus/Global Entry ... so that helps)
My carry-on is also locked ... both with quality MasterLock paddle locks.
1 out of 10 times, they want a look inside after the x-ray, so they wait while I unlock it.
No problems at all, not even in Bogotà.
My work case is a Pelican 1500 (personal Item) and my carry on is a Pelican 1510 or Nanuk 935.
No zippers, no "TSA approved" locks.
Safe Travels!!!
Thanks! Safe travels to you as well!
Where do you put the keys? I assume they are metal.
@@michaels3003 ...keys, I carry them in my hand, on a large carabiner, ... It will set off the detector, but they security sees whatthey are and let it pass, ...just like a passport, .. which you can have in your hand if youwant.

This why I take my cash out of my wallet put it in my hand announce when walking through XRay "I have Cash in my Hand". They will usually question me why and pat me down. I tell them my cash stays with me at all times. TSA wants to trip you up. Last time in IAD I was belittled for protecting my possessions and treated as a potential threat.
I put all those types of things into the zippered pockets of my jacket, and then zip the jacket into my packable backpack (that doubles as my day pack). Once everything has passed through the scanners, I can quickly put my tablet, laptop and liquids bag into the day pack, grab all 3 bags, and not hold up the line
Precheck doesn’t help sped me through much, but I’m now wondering whether in most cases it might keep my gear safer?
The worst part of being in airports is they, the officials have video cameras but you the tourist are not allowed to video them as you are in a protected / sterile area.
It is applied to every airport security. The video cameras are being looked at by the authorized personnels only.
@@tl1533
Yep !! And you the tourist aren't allowed to record video AND sound.
Therefore these little tin God's of the office can put all forms of crap on you, and you, the tourist, have little if any redress.
Also, they can't do their jobs correctly when out bound and the tray with YOUR possessions go through while the attention of the "guard" is distracted away while the accomplices go in and take your wallet, Rolex watch, mobile phones and anything else of value.
@@tl1533
Authorised to do what??
Tamper with evidence taken by the cameras to mske it look you, the person being abused (?) , are hard to deal with.
Also, if the public were allowed to have cameras that recorded voice as well as activity those little tin Gods of the office may resign and work cleaning toilet bowls.

And NO DOUBT blind eyes turned away to avoid missing out on some lolly.
I like that. "You don't have to outrun the lion. You just have to be faster than the next guy." Some people just give off a sent that attracts lions. Doesn't matter who else is around. The lion wants that one person.
The only time I was ever robbed during my travels was during security screening. I had an umbrella stored in a hard box in the outside pocket of my bag. I noticed it was missing literally when I was putting my shoes on. It was gone. The thief must’ve thought it was a valuable camera or something. 😢
Well, at least you can replace an umbrella!!!
You don't usually have the time to "time it" going through with your bag...you get shuffled through and wait on the other end :)
But, my husband and I keep an eye out on each others belongings depending on who goes in first.
Very good advice. Having a backpack with multiple pockets is a good idea. I've just decided to take my larger backpack for this reason.

It’s not surprising people don’t know because most people have never travelled by plane or have travelled very little. Rules change all the time and most people don’t know that.
A suggestion for peace of mind if/ when carrying valuables or large amounts of cash, a bank bag with a lock (the kind businesses use for night drop) or similar would certainly prevent theft of valuables.
Yep, that’s what I do plus it has an AirTag in it.
Thank you for this valuable information. I went on a trip recently and you've helped me to realize I should have done some things differently. I'll be ready next time I travel.
Same here.
What are the TSA actually looking for in the bins ? I mean what reason do they have to put their hands into the bags ?
cash...
I think the guy in the video was pretending to organise people's belongings so that they would fit through the xray machine.
@@GeeEee75. Yes! So, make certain you place it in appropriately. I’m getting a locked bag for international travel this year. This is creepy.
Just remember Diversity is our Strength. 😂🤣
I needed to see this video. Thanks 😊
Yes. And now we know!!
I have a black nylon drawstring bag ,as I am approaching I empty my pockets, wallet or money belt, cell phone, watch, (and a sneaky air tag)all into the bag then zip up into my duffle bag or left in the tray depending on how busy the airport is.
I had a problem with one of the security at Manchester airport he keep putting my bin back to the end of the line.
TSA employees should not be near those loaded trays. It should be the passengers that will push the trays to the screening machine. Trays that belong to the same passenger should go in and go out TOGETHER" from that screening machine. I am always looking where my 3 or 4 trays are.
Good info. It's appalling to watch them steal.
Here's an idea . . . require TSA agents to wear pocketless pants! I know, I know they will just sew a pouch inside the pants to hold the cash. But it would be a bit more obvious using hands to do the deed.
Great minds think alike! 😁
That’s why blackjack dealers have no pockets, and have to hold there hands out at the end of a session. Those chips are pretty small and easy to hide.
Great video! Never thought of these tips. Thank you
As an added layer of security. You can put small clips on your bag to keep the zippers from opening. Most of this is common sense.
Where do you put the small clips exactly?
This has been an issue for decades.. especially at NYC
Had the experience of TSA female team taking out each of my credit cards & looking at them. When I objected she proceeded to take lids off my meds & dump them as a distraction.
Thank you for your video! in the future, I will stay with my bin until I have to walk through the x-ray machine. I always immediately check for things value, my phone, passport, etc.. I have had a women were behind me in line try to crowd in front of me as our stuff is coming back out for to pick up. I looked at this woman I said I’m sorry my stuff is coming out first and she moved.
I usually wear a crossbody purse when traveling. So, instead of using it as my personal item, I'll remove my ID from it and put it into the bottom of my carry-on backpack. I'll put my 3-1-1 bag and electronics in the front of my backpack to easily pull out. Once I show the TSA agenr my ID and boardinf pass, I'll put them in another zippered compartment in the backpack and once through the scanner, I check everything before I walk away.
Good video with very useful advice. I always pull stuff out of my pockets and place them in the bin without thinking.
I had a high-end Kindle swiped from departing security in Quito, Ecuador. Quite mind-blowing.
I heard that guy only got like 6 months in jail. Without the threat of a long-term prison (not jail) sentence, people will continue to keep doing it. The reward is far greater than the risk.
I’m not surprised, because in every profession, there’s always gonna be a lowlife or two. Majority of them are actually honest hard-working people
Yes. You are right. But, I don’t want to be the one they steal from.
@@IrishAnnie me either but I have system I go though first & my wife puts it Thur I at the end waiting for it .. knock on wood it works for us
Sometimes they want to check your bag after it's gone through the Xray machine. They take your bag to man check it and leave you standing and then bring it back to you. They once took my handbag away and I waited for a good 5-7 minutes and they brought it back. No explanation whatsoever. All my holiday money was in my handbag. I had to rush to go and board the plane without checking my money. Thank God it was all there.
I wonder what authority these agents have, can they ask to search your items unsupervised? Can the traveler ask for a supervisor in case something seems strange? What rights does a traveler have?
I assume in the UK and USA are the meanest agents, any other country you can communicate peacefully, in my experience.
Thank you for your helpful tips.
Thank you, very much appreciated
Great video 👍🏻 thanks for sharing
All right I’m 61 years old. Why have I never thought about that although I don’t put anything valuable loose in the bin why have I never thought about them messing around with my stuff thank you very informative video.
Very helpful - thank you for doing this.
Thanks for all the tips that you are giving me
Appreciate all info!
Thanks for all the good advice.
Another good thing is if you are travelling with someone. Separate a bit. Person 1 goes through while person two watches the trays. Then obce they have gone through and are in sight/possession of personn 1 person 2 goes through
TSA have stolen my purse full of cash multiple times.
And it took a while for the penny to drop.
Great video, very well done! These are common sense, logical steps that are important to remember. Being prepared and paying attention in (potentially dangerous) public places would prevent a lot of problems or even accidents.
Excellent, thank you
Just spent a month travelling to and around the Philippines, Pacsafe backpack was the best choice I’ve made for sure. No way for anyone to dig through my bag without my knowledge and permission. Actually had a small souvenir knife in it while going through Korea that I forgot all about. The security was trying to open my bag and had to call me over to let him inside so he could find it and dispose of it before letting me proceed.
I show up in a wheelchair. Sometimes they seem to keep me waiting forever, I keep worrying about my stuff, especially with tablets out etc! I’ve forgotten the city, but one of the guys pushing my chair was absolutely on top of getting my stuff as possible. I’d never seen a guy so focused on keeping my stuff safe. My purse was turquoise so it was easy to see he had it! Fortunately I travel with a partner who can secure myself. I am asked by tsa periodically is someone is with me as they are wanting to get my stuff to me too!
EWR is a nightmare for sure. They call the airline because of the battery I was carrying. The airline agent came down, took one look at the battery and said that goes to a wheelchair, right! He then explained the TSA rules to the agent.
They make you put your phone and other electronics (tablet, chargers, wifi device) in the bin separately.
I have NEVER put my phone in a separate bin. I leave it in my purse.
@@IrishAnniewe flew from Dallas love field to Long Beach in late December, 2023. We had to place our electronics in a completely separate gray container. Our liquids bags were placed in 2 separate other gray containers. Our jackets, backpacks and shoes were in another 3 containers. 6 separate containers for 2 people. We were prepared for anything and had our wallets and passports buried deep inside our backpacks. We kept eagle eyes on everything. Fortunately we had no problems, but it’s still disturbing to have to worry about theft from these TSA agents who are supposed to protect us.
It's laptops, tablets and other large electronic devices. Phones do not require removing from your bag.
@@madchatteress Yes they do. We had to put our phones and iPads in a gray bin. We couldn’t leave them in our bags. TSA made this very clear before we passed through security. Furthermore, our phones and laptops couldn’t overlap so we had to put them in 2 separate bins. This was both flying to Long Beach and returning to love field.
I'm grateful that I never got called out for having my phone securely in my carryon. I fly often and never was told to place cell phone directly in a bin. I live in US so go through TSA for all travel.@@OkieTLB
Good tips and video. I do half of these already and will use the other half next time. Tell my son also. He's not as aware.
Many airports will make you put electronic out side of your bag or in separate bin so they can see X-ray scan better.
I am flying internationally this Thursday to my country and every time we have lots of of stuff bringing mostly close relatives. Family of 5 ( 3 kids) are almost adults now. When we are TSA security my husband go first in the line kids on the middle I am last one every one watching own stuff. So far nothing we lost it.
Right after TSA we always take our time check our stuff right there . But we usually arrive 4 hours before our flight.
Unusually thoughtful. Thanks.
Haven't flown in several years, but if I remember correctly I removed my wallet from my pocket and held it in my hand while walking thru the scanner.
Lucky you. Now you would be told to put it in the tray.
Tip: you can hold your Money in your hand when walking threw tsa. I do it ALL the time. I hope this helps a little.
I was wondering about that. It doesn’t make sense to let go of your cash in a place where anyone can snatch it up.
@@thatgirlwhousedtohavereall5549yeah i would never put cash in a open ben, they ask me whats in my hand, i show the money and its never a issue.
In Europe they ask you to put all your electronics in a separate tray. That includes mobile phones.
Oops! I might forget and keep it in a locked bag. No way am I leaving a phone in a tray. No way. It will stay in my locked Travelon bag.
@@IrishAnnie they'll see it on the scanners and ask you to go back and put it on a separate tray, even if they're off. My experience has always been that your phone can stay in your bag, but different airports have different rules. Best to check beforehand if you can.

Can I take my passport in my hand when going through body scan? In some TSA of airport, I was asked to put my passport and boarding pass on the tray. In some airport like UK , I do not need to take out my notebook and mobile phones, but in some airports I needed to take them out and put them on tray. Is there a universal rule for TSA, or, depends on the airport?

Do passengers need to show passport and boarding pass when going through TSA? If I lock my passport and boarding pass in my carry-on, I may need to take them out from my carry-on.
brilliant advice , thanks! do i have to go throught the body scanner or xray machine? is there another option? and if i do have a pat down instead does that mean my stuff is at risk?

yes,,, i wont be able to keep eyes on my stuff as easy will i if i opt for a pat down?

I have normally opted for the pat-down, unfortunately it can mean losing eye-contact with one's belongings. Last trip I was asked to take off a silk purse under my clothes (containing only cash) and to send it through the scanner. I asked why, since the whole idea is to keep it secluded. The TSA response was that I might have a blade inside to injure the agent if she examined it! I won't wear it next time--good to have some cash; however, I surmise, better to bury it in the personal item during the security check.

This has happened to me. About 17 years ago I was in O'Hare and while going through security, a TSA agent said he'd hold my passport while I went through the body scanner. He left through a door and I never saw him again.
Thank you and I can’t believe I’m so naive
You aren't alone. I was more concerned about other passengers stealing that I wasn't thinking of TSA or other security agents stealing. Unfortunately, it's a sad reality and we need to be more diligent and intentional with how we approach the security screenings to protect our belongings.
Thank you 😍🥰
You're welcome!
Nice nice thanks for making me wiser❤
A couple of things I do to streamline through TSA. I never wear anything that has to be taken off ie: jewelry or watch. Belt is just under my liquids bag. My ID and a single credit card that I will use in the airport are kept in my backpack pocket in the back “hidden” pocket separate from my real wallet which is at the bottom of my personal bag. Phone goes into the same backpack “hidden” pocket with the ID. And the backpack is laid in the bin with the hidden pocket down.
I like the video references from T2 Sofia Airport :)
Good eye 😉
TSA want the wallet and phones in the bin, how to avoid?
Its a big shame people steal when we are going thru Security, security means ,a trust and they need to secure us
All this make me not want to go anywhere 😔
I hope this video doesn't do that, even though it's showing a theft, the vast majority of your travel experiences will be positive. I've traveled to over 120 countries and what I've seen, eat, experienced, all of that far outweighs the not-so-good times. I want this video to be educational on what you can do to protect yourself but hopefully not be discouraging.
TSA? Just another reason to avoid visiting the USA.
But airport ask us to take out our phone and put separately in bin. So we could not really put inside our backpack as suggested
Out of your pockets usually not out of your bags.
Great. Thanks. I shall try that in my next trip
The usual suspects!! Just cant help themselves can they.. always gotta thieve & then complain no one wants to employ them!!
In the UK, you have to place all electrical items in the bin including you phone, Do you mean its ok to keep you phone in your bag in the US ?
Never put your watch, wallet, phone etc directly into the bins.
Always put them inside your bag and zip it up.
It always amazes me why people wait until they are at the screening machine to start the ‘ritual’ of taking everything off. This just wastes everyone’s time.
Also when retrieving their tray/bag why they stand there putting it all back on rather than taking it all to the tables away from the belt to reassemble themselves 🙄
I stay with my bin until it gets onto the moving belt to go through X-ray. Most TSA agents tell you to do this at many airports now.
Good advice but hard to believe anyone traveling whether first time or seasoned traveler doesn’t know the rules. I tend to dress in my normal way - my boots have metal and my jacket clean and costly so not going in those dirty bins. Upon entry I find a place to sit remove my jacket and place it in my roll aboard, remove boots for a very light slip on, goes in plastic grocery bag same for my purse or backpack, these I put in the trash once thru security. All this even though I’m TSA approved as depending on airports and how machines are calibrated the metal may set off the alarm and same for agents that wish to show the progress can demand that I remove my jacket. So much for paying a fee not to be harassed.
I absolutely despise the TSA lol. I’ve never had a good TSA experience. They all walk around like little Napoleons 😂, they are rude, and they think they are the most important thing!
They stole my headset at the Orlando airport
one of female asked me take out the ear set that i hung my neck
and other agent turned back on and hand me over the bin.
i was rushed and later i realized they took my ear set. i took everything out the small bin, can't miss that.
Before you go thru.. watch which agent constantly put their hands in & out their pockets.. the the person you time yourself to avoid while going thru line.
TSA locks are useless when you are flying in U.S.A. , Airport staff just break /cut the locks without reasons and they just told the passenger/s to report to airlines your problem.
Thanks for these pieces of advice. I’ve been through many TSA lines, and thankfully have never had one steal anything, but the possibility these days is much higher than in the past with less “reputable” people being hired by TSA. Thanks for the video!
put everything in your carryon....not separate....in a tray....
