Janelle, you got the "garter" stitch and the "purl" stitch pictures wrong in the video. Not trying to give a negative comment at all, just want a real beginner knitter to not get confused. The first picture you showed as "garter" is actually a purl side of stockinette, and the second picture you showed as "purl" is actually stockinette.
A "garter" stitch looks like a "purl" side but with rows a bit further from each other because there is a "knit" row in between.

Yarn advice from someone who used to work at a yarn store:
    1. Acrylic is not as warm or breathable as wool or cotton. I personally don't like it at all.
    2. If you make socks, choose yarn that's part polyester or similar, it makes the socks last longer. 75% wool 25% polyester is quite common.
    3. Merino wool is really soft and mashine washable.
    4. When making baby items, you should choose yarn that's not itchy, like merino wool.
    5. Always buy a little extra ;)

@@EmeseVida Oh yeah, I totally forgot :') We only sold superwash so I didn't even think twice when writing that.
And obviously other yarns can be machine washable, I would recommend to always check from the label :)

    1. Always check your local thrift stores for knitting supplies, people are always donating their grandma/auntie's stash!
    2. You can salvage yarn from old sweaters, which is a great way to get natural fiber yarns if you can't afford buying them new. Any damaged or poor fitting sweaters you have or find thrifting can be unraveled with a few well placed snips, saving the yarn from the landfill and your money!
    3. If you find that knitting is for you invest in good needles! A set of interchangeables is expensive, but they are an investment that will save you time and money in the long run.
    4. RUclips is your friend, there is a video for every knitting technique and term you will ever come across. If one person's explanation doesn't work for you, there are about a million others to choose from until you find the one that clicks!

It’s nice to hear that you can take upwards of 6 months to make a piece. Online it seems like I constantly see stuff like, a complicated sweater per month (or less!), and that makes me feel like I’m not fast enough to even think about attempting a sweater.

That comes over time, after 10 years i could talk with people or watch tv at the same time and now after 20 years of knitting it takes only 1-3 weeks to make a shirt. But it took long and it was never my goal, i just love knitting and the more you do it more easier it gets. Don't worry, normal tempo is a few months. Some people who make it for a living can finish a sweater in a week, but it's not healyhy for your wrist if you're not used to and when you count only the work hours it turned out they are just a bit faster than you.

I've been knitting and crocheting for years.
Garter stitch is fabric where you knit on both the right and wrong side. If you are knitting in the round, you would need to knit one round and purling the next round in order to get garter stitch.
Stocking stitch or stockinette stitch or plain knitting is when you knit of the right side and purl on the wrong side. Reverse stockinette is when you purl on the right side and knit on the wrong side. If you are knitting in the round, you knit every round in order to archive stocking/stockinette stitch.
If you are knitting stocking stitch flat, it has a habit of curling because the purl stitch (I believe) is short than the knit stitch. That is something to keep in mind.
I have been crocheting longer than I have been knitting so it is a lot faster for me to knit than crochet, but I have recently finished knitting a vest in under two weeks. So It is possible to knit garments quickly. It's just something that you have to get better at over time. I have made so many mistakes in my knitting, and from what I've learned over the years is that it's not so much making a mistake, it's knowing how to fix it that matter. I've done cables and had to pick back because I've crossed them wrong earlier on. Once you know how to properly fix your mistakes, you will gain a lot more confidence in your craft. The important thing to to be patient with yourself and your learning process. Don't try to be a quick knitter. That comes with time. Work on knitting the stitches at an even tension, not twisting stitches, not putting any accidental yarn overs or accidently decreasing stitches which will mess up stitch count. RUclips has a wealth of knitting knowledge and there are tons of tutorials. I used a lot of them to help me.
    Knitting RUclipsrs:
Roxanne Richardson (a master knitter who has a tons of videos on different knitting techniques)
Suzanne - Off the Cuff (also has tons of videos on different techniques)

Your sweaters are gorgeous! Here are things I'd like to share from my knitting journey:
    1. I highly recommend checking out Very Pink Knits and Nimble Needles for excellent knitting tutorials.
    2. I learned to knit from the book Stitch N Bitch, supplemented by online resources.
    3. If you are working a complex stitch pattern on a large piece like a sweater, look up how to use a "lifeline."
    4. I keep a notebook in my bag and keep notes so I remember where I left off on a project.
    5. To keep tension, I'm learning to knit Norwegian style, like Arne and Carlos teach on their RUclips channel.
    6. Lastly, a beautiful and relaxing knitting vlog is Kammebornia Podcast. It's in Swedish with English subtitles. It's not a tutorial--it's just beautiful and calming to listen to and glance up at while knitting.
(Unrelated question-- what lipstick are you wearing? It's a lovely color and suits you well).

For total beginners I recommend Lion Brand's Wool Ease thick and quick. It's 80% acrylic and 20% wool, but it's a great starting point and its incredibly soft (in my opinion). I'm not sure if you can get it outside of the US, but it's what I started with and I really loved it. I actually still use it. I recommend starting out with a scarf using garter stitch and slowly start other projects. To get more comfortable knitting in the round and with double pointed needles, I suggest a simple beanie tutorial. They are usually found on RUclips or many of the yarn brands have free patterns on their websites. If you wanted to get more experience, I recommend beanies and making tons of them. Mistakes happen and you learn along the way. Also making beanies will help you further your knowledge of using different kinds of needles and you'll be able to make other projects like socks.

Thank you so much for sharing your knitting projects. I love seeing what is on your needles each season. I can't wait to see your newest edition when it is finished!
Here are some of my tips.
    1. I am a self-taught knitter (pre-youTube), I found the book, Knitting in Plain English by Maggie Righetti very helpful. She has excellent descriptions and pictures for learning the different techniques for increasing and decreasing stitches. There are other excellent books out there.
    2. There are all types of stitch markers. The ones that you showed are on the large side and would typically be used to hold stitches instead of marking a place in your knitting. There are smaller markers that you place between stitches on the needle and slip them each row. You can purchase them at your local yarn or craft store.
    3. Take a class at a local yarn store. Not only will you learn from the instructor, but also from the other knitters taking the class.
    4. Before taking on a big project like a sweater, knit something smaller like a dish cloth or scarf. Projects like these go very quickly.
    5. You can never have too many knitting needles. lol
    6. Knitting is not a sprint, it is a marathon. Take your time and enjoy your art.

I started out crocheting and after some practice with knitting I started knitting my way because it feels more like crocheting and my hands are comfortable doing it. Very interesting! I'm right handed btw. Thanks for the video!

I love the first one so pretty. Iam a frekvent knitter and I would recomend to start with something you feel a little extra love for. My first project when i started knitting after have'nt knitted in many years were selbu mittens. Hard and not the best result but i didnt get bored and i learned a lot. If I started something that i didnt love i would not have continiued knitting❤

If you want to also learn crochet I recommend TL Yarn Crafts' channel!
As someone who only knitted and was having trouble wrapping my head around crochet, her tutorials are so easy to follow. Her patterns are also very good looking.
    I definitely recommend her!

She's talking about knitting flat, so on the wrong side you have to purl whereas for garter you are knitting all the time flat 😊

If you can find try bamboo yarn! I have made so many shirts with hjertegarn bamboo/cotton yarn. It is so shiny, soft and more you wash it the softer it comes. Also mohair/silk mix is the lightest and one of the warmest yarns to use. Use double yarn to make the fluffiest and softest knits. If you want to make a beanie that is really warm i suggest to add mohair/silk yarn with your wool of choise, same goes with socks.

Natural dyeing yarn is so fun! I’ve been doing a lot lately, and there are lots of kitchen scraps you can use like onion skins, avocado pits and peel etc.

    • @MsSavvy9
      @MsSavvy9 2 года назад

Oh, yes! 🤦🏽‍♀️I have to try it, don't I? You talked me into it! My nurse friend knits... if I was to dye yarn for her how much should I dye?
I grew Japanese indigo to make my own dye but that didn't do well. I have more seeds started in my aquaponics system 😕 They are sprouts now. 🤞🏼🤞🏼
I have been experimenting a lot. I tried onion skins, turmeric, cabbage and beets, logwood, madder root, avocado pits and skins, cochineal, black walnut, and later made an indigo vat from powder I purchased on etsy. I've played with different mordants and made I made an "iron water" modifier using vinegar and some old rusty screws. I have been trying different fibers in different weights (linen, cotton and silk) but I haven't tried wool yet. I've dyed finished garments, yardage and scraps. 😅 So fun!
I'm just north of Chicago in the suburbs where fall is in full swing. I've been looking at everything like 🤩 could I dye with that?! RUclips and Instagram have been very helpful, but I've also found a ton of great books and e-books through my local library.
I should do it! I should try yarn. 😬😂

I think all your tips were quite helpful. I want to knit sweaters but never make it past the scarves and hats because I don't have the patience 🤣 I think I knit continental style but I used to be ambidextrous so I hold everything weirdly and use my right hand as my dominant so I too can't teach ppl. Purl Soho also has easy free patterns for beginners and a store in Soho NYC.

Honestly you can skip the scarf step, they're boring! There are a few sweater patterns that are super beginner friendly, and you'll actually feel you're making something unlike scarves which can feel like a chore!

Some more reccomendations for new knitters
    1) circular needles are WAY nicer to use than straight needles
    2) get a crochet hook the same/simmilar size to your needles. If you drop any stitches, it makes it super easy to fix mistakes.
    3) very pink knits has very good RUclips tutorials for tonnes of techniques
    4) stitch markers which lock are really good- they wont fall out, but they also won't get stuck in the project.
    5) drops is a really cheap brand that sells all natural fibre wool, and the quality is generally quite good.

Another bit of advice is to start off with wooden or plastic needles. They tend to grip the yarn a little better than metal needles, which is important to help prevent dropped stitches. Also the bigger the needles/yarn the better. You'll have an easier time seeing what you're doing.

Hi! I'm just starting to knit the first jumper you showed in the video, but I realized that every 12 stiches, 1 stich is decreased (k2tog twice= 2 stitches decreased, yfwd, k1 3 times= 3 stihes increased, sl1 k1 psso twice = 2 stitches decreased, all in all 1 stitch increased). Am I doing something wrong or have I misunderstood something in the pattern?

Acrylic is amazing for people like me with eczema.

  • @iSharShar
    @iSharShar 2 года назад

The other problem with acrylic yarn for a sweater is that it retains sweat and might make you too warm to wear ... because it's plastic it will hold on to odor. Having a yarn with wool content might help to regulate temperature, and wool is also moisture and flame resistant.
