2 words, "boiling water" 1) Drop all 4 carb slides into a pan of water, bring to a boil. (heat water and slides the same) 2) let'em boil for a few min, get 1 out, and metal sleeve pulls right out. 3) use epoxy to reset metal sleeve.
Interesting, what do you mean by the metal sleeve? I have to do this on a BS34 carb. I think that if the new carb rubber is heated like you suggest maybe it will just pull over the washers?
Great Video dood - I got my diagrams in yesterday and mounted them using your method. It worked out great. I used my Harbor Freight Mini-Lathe to hold the slider with some electrical tape to protect the surface from the chuck jaws. The Lathe gave me more control on how much metal to remove on the flange retainer. I now have them in mini clamps to hold them in place with a little pressure while the silicone cures.
Some WD-40 a dull butter knife and a little patience you can do it fairly fast. just pull the old diaphragm off and install the new diaphragm as long as the washers are oiled and the diaphragm is oiled lightly and with the butter knife you can push the new one right in between.
Really Nice Vid Dood. I just tried to remove one of my rubber diaphragms last night, trying that method of tapping on the slider with a dowel and supporting the outside with a tube. I got the same results you did. I broke the slider... Each set Slider /w Diaphragms is something like 80 - 130 bucks a piece. I ordered some replacement diaphragms and a slider. I will be using this method to remove that little flange holding the washer that’s securing the rubber. Thanks again dood.
Great video, really helpful. Also is the *only* way to change diaphragms on FJ1100/FJ1200 and XJ900F carbs as the sliders on these are machined as a single piece. Plus the hint about aligning the rubber tab solved a mystery for me (Doh!!)
You do realize that the diaphragms can be just pulled off over the washer and then oil the new one and it will stretch right over the washers and it takes about five minutes to do all four. Not knocking your video but you ruined your carb piston for no reason.
Hi, interesting video. I'm in need of 4 diaphragms for my 2000 vmax and cannot find anywhere where I can get a good deal, their very expensive. Can you post some info as to where you bought yours from, I live in the UK, thanks, Bob
