    I can't believe they had the audacity to ask you to do the last minute tour and still not accept your appeal. They're literal criminals, using students as free labour. Student guides are always paid in other universities. They clearly used you at the end, getting your hopes up of the appeal getting accepted if you did the tour. I almost got dismissed from my med school back in 2009. I can only tell you, as someone who almost failed in this "medical education" system to eventually having worked in the field for 9 years now, a lot of med schools these days are just out of touch with the reality and practice in medicine. Like literally you don't even need to learn the 90% stuff you were taught in med school in order to be great doctors. It's a disconnected and corrupt system that sucks a lot of money out of students who aspire to be in medical field working.

    • @NeishaG
      @NeishaG  Год назад +7

      I've heard many doctors now say this! That majority of things learned in medical school is very outdated and the curriculum needs a massive upgrade! I just wonder when they'll ever do that and realize that the system isn't helping anyone to succeed.

      That is absolutely true. It is a series of hoop jumping and memorization of whatever they want you to spout out on a test as a right answer, which may not be correct at all. Medical school is survival camp. Dog eat dog. Not a nice place. A lot of stress to see if you can survive it. Burnout is the end result. That is why so many doctors are actually leaving medicine for something else. It isn't about helping people, it is about serving the pharmaceutical industry.

    This is absolutely unbelievable, corrupt & shady practice by the school. Thank you for sharing your story, I can imagine this happening to so many students, but we don't know or hear about it because they don't have the same platform/base you do. Thank you for bringing awareness.
    To have this happen to you, and get yourself back up and transfer and start again from scratch, if that's not resilience, I don't know what is. So, keep fighting and never give up on your dream. The school simply stole the money, I imagine they do this to many students, enroll a bunch of people, when they make it to semester 4-5, the school panics that it probably needs to get rid of half the class because they probably don't have enough clinical spots, so they start making things difficult. For example, the paper/scantron test, the fu$%? Is this the 1990s? They knew what they were doing, they gave a difficult course, the semester was impossible to pass. They got what they wanted, students money, and failing half the class. The fact that it was sent to 16 other students?! Not a coincidence. I think what upsets me the most about this, is the fact the dean didn't have the audacity to take students meetings. This tells you A LOT about this school, and how they're running it.
    Definitely avoiding Medical University of America at ALL COSTS!

    I’m so glad you’re sharing your story. This is a very important lesson that medical students need to understand during school and beyond. Your school is not your friend! An older friend told me this before I started med school and it has helped me time and time again. I never speak to the admins or professors in person; everything is in writing over email. It helped me to pull up an email whenever an admin or prof tried to something. Esp for women, minority students, you’ve got to watch your back! You did so much for your school and it’s so hurtful to see that they just threw you to the side when it was most convenient for them

      Thank you so much for taking the time to watch my video. I completely agree, especially when studying abroad in the Caribbean, the school is not our friend and we have to ensure we always watch our backs especially being minorities! Everything going forward will always be in writing! This experience was all lessons learned and I’m glad I got to go to another school and start over to much better things. Everything always happens for a reason ♥️🥰

    I remember having a very similar scenario to yours with a class back at UofT. It had to do with me handing in a late paper. Luckily for me when I argued my case about my paper not being accepted after a certain date I used and quoted the course syllabus like crazy to make them change their decision and it worked. It sucks but sometimes these syllabus/book guidelines are filled with ways that you can win an appeal. Also I can't even imagine how difficult that was getting that terrible news on that one day and knowing all that hard work for those 2 years and money all gone. I hope your parents and other family was supportive of you through that extremely difficult time.

      UTRGV is in Texas. I dropped a class June 2, 2023, in time for a 100% refund. Instead, the school’s registrar refused to drop the class despite having a “higher up” email the registrar asking why the class hadn’t been dropped. I then received an email from the financial aid director stating I need to withdraw from the class and i was now eligible for a 0% refund. They wanted to keep $2k of my student loans for a class that I dropped. The W would also suspend me from financial aid eligibility and would put me on an academic probation for 2 semesters. I filed a formal complaint with the Dept of Ed (federal) and TX Board of High Ed (state).

    If you are premed, this is why Caribbean schools are talked down upon on sdn and Reddit. They are for profit institutions that do not follow US accreditation standards due to being offshore and engage in unethical and predatory behavior that ultimately harms students. Caribbean schools have no problem failing out more than half their class since there is no way they can accommodate all their students during clinical rotations. Also match rates in the US are abysmal due to stigma. Do not go this route unless it’s your last resort.

    • @NeishaG
      @NeishaG  Год назад +2

      They are for-profit schools however everything else you said is very false information. Most of these schools are accredited and have audited visits to ensure they're up to US standards and their head offices are based in the states. The match rates are no bad, I don't know what statistics you're looking at but a lot of residency spots went unmatched and hundred of IMG students were able to match into their residencies. I suggest clearly not reading your information on Reddit and those sites and they're very inaccurate and changing your resources. Its not a last resort as many students especially Canadian students cannot get into a medical school in Canada because the admissions are VERY LOW to get in with the lack of schools and seats available, where majority of Canadians are actually at Caribbean medical schools.

      @@NeishaG the match rates are def bad if youre not in the popular carib schools. Also it's way harder to match into competitive specialties. @@NeishaGhe’s right. You’re a Canadian studying there as an international student. Even if they’re accredited, in the event of mishandling situation that involves a lawyer and a court, the head office in the states will put the entire blame on the institution in the Carib. There’s a business model that only a good lawyer can expose but they know students are already in debt and wouldn’t risk it.

    I was able to study on second semester, but in the middle and almost finishing the semester the advisor told me that I was put in “approbation” because of one failed class. I told her that I studied for the redo test, but I’ve never received the invitation to do it. Then I reunited with the register officer and the advisor to explained my struggles etc and make the letter of appeal (this happened before I discovered that I was already suspended).
    I was able to do my final exams and nobody was aware that I was already out.
    One week after vacation I arrived to campus and went through moodle page and I didn’t saw any my new classes enrolled so I suspected that something happened.
    I went through to the emails and I found out that I was suspended on August 10 (saw the letter on Sept 03).

However in this case, there was a huge lack of communication with the consequences of the actions I took here because it was done during Covid, and I did seek advice and was given wrongful information.

    That would suck. I find that you sort of blame others tho. A good life lesson. Yes, read everything especially the hand book. Never take anyone's word. Double, triple check everything and never count on anyone but yourself. Talking about suing a medical school is pretty extreme to say ( even though you have no intention on doing that because of financial reasons). They have strict rules for good reasons. And you never met their requirements. It's as simple as that. Don't forget that being a doctor is also being professional at all times. All the best in you're new school. One more thing. Its an awesome feeling to do good for others. But its not worth it if you expect something in return.

      I think it’s very important for anyone who wishes to go to a Caribbean school to note that these are FOR-PROFIT institutions. They do not care about the dreams of their students, nor whether or not they succeed (a lot of data suggests that many of them don’t)

    • @NeishaG
      @NeishaG  2 месяца назад

      This is not true. Everyone is an international student when it comes to a Caribbean medical school. They are for-profit schools. Currently right now their class sizes have downsized to 12 students, and they decreased their tuition. They can accept how many students but its the students choice to go there after the acceptance since they're currently struggling with numbers.

    Hey, don’t want to rub salt in the wound but this is a genuine question. I understand that the standards are quite high to matriculate into both Canadian and U.S.(MD/DO) programs. I myself have been undergoing the 2022-2023 cycle.
    Why did you choose to pursue a Caribbean Med school? Do you think that may have played a role in the faculty not being as helpful to you? In general, do you think you were academically ready for Medical School? With the time frame you mention, I assume you got accepted to another Caribbean Med School. Why are you choosing to pursue that choice again?
    I really do not want to come across as rude or insulting. However, it does seem that Caribbean Med schools cater to those who don’t have the credentials to matriculate elsewhere so that’s why I ask.

    • @NeishaG
      @NeishaG  Год назад +13

      With the US and Canadian medical schools, there's a lot of competition and numerous students applying. Thus, there's not enough room for many students to attend schools, so students go to the Caribbean to study rather than going onto do a masters and PDH and then applying to medical school (that's money and years spent).
      I am academically ready, however I told you my story already and that's what had happened. Nothing with me not being academically ready. To reiterate, I chose to pursue this again because I already spent 2 years studying medicine, so I'm not going to give up on my career goals.
      It's not necessarily that they cater to those who don't have credentials, but there's many reasons that people go to Caribbean medical schools, such as career changes, having families, competition, etc. There's so many other reasons.

      @@NeishaG Not to be mean, but why are you so set on a Caribbean medical school. I'm worried you are not fully aware of how much greener and stable it is to go to medical school in Ireland, UK or Australia. Why would you gamble your money at a school that will kick you out anytime. If you don't match you have zero options to work. You end up 200 k in debt with no way to pay it off if you don't match. At least in Ireland, UK, and Australia you can stay to work as an intern and get more experience. Caribbean schools are run by the mafia pretty much. They don't care about you.

      Canadian MD standards for the mcat borderline crazy though. Pretty sure, they have a pretty high CARS minimum. Also, it’s so tough to get into an American MD program with Canadian residency.

I agree with your with everything you said in your comment. Doctors are type A high achievers.
