Always wanted to see this knife put to the test. It seems to have come through nicely, but in the hands of a competent user. Thanks for the video, much appreciated.
thank you for the excellent video. I live 5 minutes from very large and awesome mountains and yet I rarely ever get to go into them. after watching your video, I feel like I've been there.
I own an Opinel # 8 which I am satisfied with. Its a knife that holds its edge on Carbon Steel... This video shows just how efficient Beavers can be....
Nice video, I knew woodshavings could make good tindle but this seems like a very noob-friendly way of doing this. You might have just saved a life if we see an apocalypse in our lifetimes :P
Thank you! Yes i still use this knife! It is very light, compact, very high quality. Holds an edge well. Replace it only on the same but without serrated edge))
thats my edc. for that purpose its a really handy and well designed knife. u can use it as an outdoor (i am sure u could do the most things with it), but i think there many others, even not too expensive, which i would prefer to use.
That was probably the hardest test I have seen on a folding knife. I'm glad it stood up to the punishment, how the the edge on the blade after you got done?
Thank you so much for the advice. I am trying to figure out a good back up knife. To me a good back up knife is the most important thing. Keep up the good work and great videos!
Hello, first of all, this is a great review, but i want to ask about the tip of this opniel, I have a bunch of regular opinel, inox and carbon steel and they always break on the point. Is this outdoor model different? Thank you.
I liked your review, however, it convinced me that a non serrated blade will work better. I question, though why make a knife do the work that an ax could do much better, like batooning.
Great video, Was there any sharpening in between takes? I would like to see some of you boys do this with your china knives. If they wont do it STOP buying them.
The knife was not sharpening between takes.Steel is quite good) Today I think this is one of the best knives for Outdoor. Light weight, excellent quality, sturdy, comfortable, great geometry and functionality, adequate price)
If you do work with a knife like this you will see that outsourced knives, "the china syndrome knives" will not hold up. schrade, buck, gerber, kershaw, ect. The chinese are good are making knives that look like they should work.
I would buy one if they hadn't fucked the entire knife and gone against everything that the general public want and put that bloody stupid serrated edge on it....great vid mate thx for sharing
***** I agree but like their other knives they should offer both. The blind masses that bought the BG knife are the cause of this crap, the 'advertising data suggest the public want serrated blades' dumb arses couldn't think for them selves and realise people who bought those knives now wish they didn't LMAO
we think alike mate I have the #8 carbone opinel, Mora MG, a victorinox huntsman which I use more than anything else and for camping a ontario sp47, I have others but dont use them much, the knives I listed are what I use, I am waiting on a tramontina machete to replace my ageing 'homemade' indonesia machete.....other than the machete I don't use large knives unless pig hunting then comes out the trusty old 14inch bowie blade,it was made by a local bloke. that I've used for 30 years but I'm getting a bit old for that lol cheers mate happy hunting
To be fair, Opinel sells this knife in France to the sailing crowd who often prefer the serrations. Note it also has a shackle key for sailing. The "hole" in the blade is not just an aid to open the knife. And no carbon steel option for the same reason.
"Batoning" ... WHY would you baton a folding knife - or ANY knife for that matter? In over 60 years of knife use, camping, fishing, hunting, etc. I have yet to baton a knife. Why take a chance on breaking it? ANY knife WILL eventually break if you baton it. NO manufacturer guarantees/warrantees their knives if they are batoned. Batoning a FOLDING knife is GUARANTEED to break it. Use the proper tool for the job! An axe to split wood. A knife is designed to CUT not split wood or fell a daRn tree!
The partially serrated edge makes this knife completely useless for any kind of real bushcraft work. Those serrations are right where ninety percent of knife work should be done, and almost none of it can be done with those serrations taking up the work part of the blade. Batoning with any knife is silly, no matter how much RUclips incest by a bunch of pseudo-experts says otherwise, but batoning with a knifelike this is especially foolish. People actually think it means something if the knife doesn't break. That's the silliest thing of all. All it means is that the knife didn't break, or the edge didn't chip or roll, THAT TIME. You may do the same thing two hundred times without damage, or it may ruin the knife the first time, and neither case proves anything except you're willing to beat a perfectly good knife with a club, rather than carry real woodsman tools with you. All that aside, this is just another Opinel with a hole in the blade. Yet you still beat it with a club, trying to prove what, I have no idea, other than the fact that you're one more victim of RUclips incest. You call the knife your best friend, and then beat it with a club. That makes sense.
I do not agree with your opinion. The knife is very durable, comfortable and functional with its weight and size. Sereytor does not interfere with the cutting thread and is especially useful when creating tinder. knife Batoning need when you make a fire in a wet forest in bad weather. It is much easier to do with a knife, rather than other tool.
James, got to disagree with you as well on your comments. I can make feather sticks with a serrated edge with no problem. What Bush craft use are speaking of that cannot be done with a serrated edge ??
James Ritchie your comment really doesn't make much sense, in the video he showed all sorts of bushcraft tasks and they all worked no matter the serrated edge, also batoning is a good test as it tests how durable the lock is if you hit 200 times and it doesn't brake it mean's your knife lock is durable, if the brakes the first time then the materials are cheap and not well put together, it seem's pretty obvious and intuitive.
Completely agree with the batoning comment, but I've learnt over the years you can't say that on youtube because people here have no real experience and learnt from self proclaimed experts who also don't have much experience, so very few people who actually know will ever see your comment.
Excellent test and video; best one on the #8 Outdoor. Most reviewers sit in their living room or kitchen and gab. This is outstanding, thanks!
Always wanted to see this knife put to the test. It seems to have come through nicely, but in the hands of a competent user. Thanks for the video, much appreciated.
for me is this one of the best "opinel outdoor n.8" videos
i love it!
thx
This goes to show you that action speak louder then words. Very good review, very well done!
good work Dimitriy you show how a small knife can do big jobs. best wishes from the UK
thank you for the excellent video. I live 5 minutes from very large and awesome mountains and yet I rarely ever get to go into them. after watching your video, I feel like I've been there.
Thanks a lot, Oliver!) Opinel - Great knives!)
Better than any review I have seen or read.
matthew light Thanks a lot!)
Dimitriy Sarnikov Ansel Knight During the work on this video? --- No
Thanks for sharing, bought mine a week ago, will see, cheers from France
Very useful review ! Great real life testing! Well done! Best regards from Athens- Greece!
Excellent review - no words needed. Very well done.
I'm impressed. Did not think an Opinel could do that.
Aaah Les Français !! Best food and great knife ...I always carry one ( nr 8 in Olive wood handle ) Oh what a joy !!
Good job and skills, Dima!
Good video...good test...good knife.........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot!)
Best video of opinel outdoor!!!!...Greetings from italian Apennines.
10uears later and this is been hailed as a lethal zombie knife by westminster
Great video !
I own an Opinel # 8 which I am satisfied with. Its a knife that holds its edge on Carbon Steel... This video shows just how efficient Beavers can be....
Thanks for making this. 10/10
Top job, you sold it to me. Was looking for a folder a bit different. Just broght this one. Thanks. Subscribing was an easy choise :-)
Good Job!
Got one, really cool in wet applications but for soft usages 👍
Beautiful video.. I have too opinel 12 explorer
Nice video, I knew woodshavings could make good tindle but this seems like a very noob-friendly way of doing this. You might have just saved a life if we see an apocalypse in our lifetimes :P
love the opinel.
thanks! excelent review.
I have one of these knives and it is fast becoming my fav outdoor knife
ottimo lavoro.Bravo!
Very good
Good video...good test...good knife. :-)
Nice thx !
Great "review"
A picture IS indeed worth a thousand words. Are you still using it? Has it held up?
Thank you! Yes i still use this knife! It is very light, compact, very high quality. Holds an edge well. Replace it only on the same but without serrated edge))
Dimitriy Sarnikov Are you saying that you would not buy the serrated edge again?
I would like to have both for different things)
I'd love to get this knife, if it had a plain edge.
Me too Keith! I think it was a bad move not having the option of serrated or plain!
Thanks!)
Good one.
Awesome! Dec 2021 😅
Mille grazie!!! Thanks a lot!)
Does the eye at the front of the blade function as a shackle key?
thats my edc. for that purpose its a really handy and well designed knife.
u can use it as an outdoor (i am sure u could do the most things with it), but i think there many others, even not too expensive, which i would prefer to use.
That was probably the hardest test I have seen on a folding knife. I'm glad it stood up to the punishment, how the the edge on the blade after you got done?
The knife blade is in excellent condition. a little bit corrected on the belt)
Thank you so much for the advice. I am trying to figure out a good back up knife. To me a good back up knife is the most important thing. Keep up the good work and great videos!
*****
Thanks a lot! This is very good variant! Good luck!
A+ !!!
Grazie!)
What is the size of this knife? It looks like it has a longer blade than 3-1/2".
Good job man! What about whistle? Is it loud enough?
Thank you) Very good whistle. Good quality, loud enough)
nice
Hello, first of all, this is a great review, but i want to ask about the tip of this opniel, I have a bunch of regular opinel, inox and carbon steel and they always break on the point. Is this outdoor model different? Thank you.
+Joe Shelling Hello, Joe) Almost any knife can be broken.
I did not break.I can only advise not to create a large load on the blade.
+Dimitriy Sarnikov hahaha you are right about that, I meant that in opinel knives, points are specially weak. Thank you for the reply, it was useful.
+Ansel Knight Thanks for the answer. I'll buy a couple of them.
+Joe Shelling The Outdoor has the same blade size as the "regular" No. 8, but the blade thickness of the No. 10.

Cesar Alvarez Weight concerns? :P I mean when you are backpacking in like the mountains you don't want to carry too damn much weight with you right?
To show techniques with what can be done with what you have.
I love Opinel but i would never use it like a fixed blade.
Great video, Was there any sharpening in between takes? I would like to see some of you boys do this with your china knives. If they wont do it STOP buying them.
The knife was not sharpening between takes.Steel is quite good)
Today I think this is one of the best knives for Outdoor. Light weight, excellent quality, sturdy, comfortable, great geometry and functionality, adequate price)
Brandozabr
The axe at 13:00 is really ineffective.
Too bad they don't make it with an all smooth edge. It would just be more useful to me like that.
génial :)
To be honest a plain edge would be better
You use it well, but I can't imagine Opinel could have made it any uglier if they tried.
If you do work with a knife like this you will see that outsourced knives, "the china syndrome knives" will not hold up. schrade, buck, gerber, kershaw, ect. The chinese are good are making knives that look like they should work.
Don't Baton with it locked. Bad
I would buy one if they hadn't fucked the entire knife and gone against everything that the general public want and put that bloody stupid serrated edge on it....great vid mate thx for sharing
