- Japan is hosting the first East Asia Cricket Cup in Sano, near Tokyo.
Japan's cricketers are a long way from competing at the highest level but the game does have a presence in the country.
National cricket team captain, Masaomi Kobayashi, talks to Al Jazeera about the sport’s growing popularity in Japan.

I think they should have tier wise cricket. Like basic being 4th tier and highest level being 1st tier. Top two teams should qualify to the higher tier after an year or some particular number of matches. Overall, cricket needs to be organised from the base.

ICC needs to step up their game and have more teams included in the Cricket world cup...I was particularly disappointed when I found out that the 2019 Cricket World Cup will be played by the 10 ICC Cricketing members only, smh...they could have done more...I would love to see Team Japan & Team Korea in a cricketing world cup one day.

Unfortunately in Japan the main sport most Japanese like to be part of and play against other rival nations is soccer or football.

@Jin amarasinghe It is more popular among people under 18. Soccer was a very minor sport until early 2000s, now everyone knows Real Madrid, Manchester United,. In 20 years soccer will be #1 no doubt.

@@AliKhan12345 Because teams work hard to qualify for the world cup but if you let everyone play then there is no point in improving so you can go to the world cup. The world cup is the stage for the best so in order to play there you should atleast be able to stand out among the other teams. Japan will probably compete in the world cup one day but for now may the best team get a shot.
Do you really want to see Australia bowl Hong Kong all out for 23 runs? Or England hit 600 runs vs Portugal? Many teams are not at a good enough level to compete against the first class cricketing nations yet.

The limit of 10 teams in the recent World Cup was a missed opportunity. Afghanistan performed well (they came close to beating India) and it would have been nice to see a different format with a few more developing teams (Kenya, Zimbabwe, Canada, Netherlands, Ireland and Scotland) as in previous World Cups. I know there would be some one sided matches, but as the tournament went on for 6 weeks, surely it could have consisted of several groups with the developing nations playing each other on a bigger stage, with the top 2 teams progressing.
@Portcullis You can never know what ICC wants. This game can never grow if the associate teams and the other new emerging teams are not given exposure. If the top 8 teams go on playing among themselves then even after 50 years only these teams will be playing the world cup. ICC should give chance to other teams too. They should learn from FIFA.
ICC will utterly fail to contribute anything towards the sport's development there, just like with USA, and then ultimately sabotage Japan's cricket ambitions, just like with USA.
T20 Cricket is way better than boring Football.

I am an Australian of British and Japanese heritage, and love cricket.
I didn't see one ball middled off the bat in this vid and the only shot(slog pull to cow corner) was a top edge. Lots more practice needed, cricket skills are generally learnt a at a young age.
But hope to see Japanese cricketers in my life time, I am 41 in 2019, mabey....

Actually there is a chance of getting a kabaddi anime more than cricket. There is a manga known as shakunetsu kabaddi which is currently popular in japan and many japanese are taking interest in kabaddi for eg. there are many anime having kabaddi mentions or scenes in it, anime like gintama, chio's school road, teekyu, fullmetal panic etc. On other hand, they treat cricket like joke just like we cricket lovers treat baseball like a joke.

@@karundas4750 its not ICC, its BCCI who is trying to replicate IPL on international stage. All the member nations were in favour of group stage-knock out format but BCCI weilded its muscles
IPL can do wonders here ..
IPL should do what football clubs do . Make small teams for their clubs . like Mumbai Indians B or CSK B .. and start training players at grassroot level in these country

I am sure they will be better than India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh in a few decades. This is what happened in the case of football and hockey. Japan started much later and left behind India, Pakistan, and other South Asian countries.
2023 wc is round robin means only 10 teams and we know who will the all 10 teams 2019 wc is also round robin plz icc plz chane the structure of the wc at least 16 teams should be there like in 2011 and 2015 world cup it is
