Tom Cruise, IMO, has THE best Filmography of my generation. His ratio of "hits" to "flops" is astounding. He doesn't even really have a "huge" filmography for someone who has been a gigantic superstar for close to 40 years (only 50 credits to his name currently). I think I can count on one hand the number of movies that haven't gotten great reviews. I don't care for him on a personal level (I think he's very odd), but I certainly respect his acting ability, AND his love for the business of making films.
Well said. I agree with everything 100%. He is in many of my favorite movies, and even though he is a bit crazy, He hits way more than he misses.
The Last Samurai, A Few Good Men, Oblivion, Minority Report, even The Firm, Collateral, all excellent films. He puts everything he has into every project he undertakes and it shows. He really knows how to make a movie - he didn't have the clout he has today when this came out - and Top Gun Maverick is a must see - I saw both films at the cinema 36 years apart and loved the first one at the time. I still love it but he sequel is sooooooooooooooooo damn good.
It's strange to see people who have never seen this. One of the greatest movies ever made
I'm glad we finally got around to it!
The early F-14s did have a problem with the engines. AND, the ejection seats were designed assuming the plane was moving and the canopy would be ripped up due to air flow. But the flat spin meant the canopy didn't move fast enough from the plane.
So, when the ejection seat fired, well it fired him right into the canopy.
Both of these were found on real F-14s.
In Vietnam, they monitored the pilot's medical condition during a study.
And they found out, the pilots had MORE stress landing on the carrier at night, then they did in the middle of combat.
I remember an interview where a Navy pilot related landing on a carrier in the middle of an ocean to jumping off a sofa and trying to land with your nose touching a dime in the middle of your living room.
@@fubar1217 the latter sounds way scarier than landing on a carrier
In reference to what happened when Goose died... "When an object moves through air (or some other fluid), the air is disturbed. This disturbance or wake is known as wake turbulence. It can also be called "jet wash". If "Jet wash" enters a planes engine it can cause a "Flame out" or "Compressor stall" which is not good for the engine... or the pilot. hope this explains things
"You! You are still dangerous. But you can be my wingman any time."
"Bullshit! You can be mine."
Fun Fact: The real Top Gun School imposes a $5 fine to any staff member that quotes the film.
Real Viper Fact: Charlie's "older man" date at the officer's club is Rear Admiral Pete "Viper" Pettigrew. He is a retired Navy pilot and Top Gun instructor, and shot down a MIG during the Vietnam War. He served as the technical consultant on the film.
Let's Go Fact: Riding on the back of this film's success, the U.S. Navy set up recruiting booths in the major cinemas to try and catch some of the adrenaline charged guys leaving the screenings. They had the highest applications rate for years as a result.
"The moonlight is hitting just right"
Tony Scott loved a beautiful color palette in the 80's. Check out The Hunger, Beverly Hills Cop 2 and Days of Thunder (also with Tom) for more of his artistry. RIP
Great reaction! Training accidents happen more often than we could imagine. They practice and train to mitigate hazards as much as possible. This preps them for war so they have the skills and experience to accomplish missions effectively
Sarah's reflexive eyeroll and 'Gimme a break' at 25:05 made my day; totally warranted!
🤣
Amazing classic Top Gun directed by Tony Scott starring Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Val Kilmer and Tom Skerritt. The music video of the film is the classic song "Take My Breath Away" single by Berlin and the famous line is epic "I feel the need....the need for speed". Thank you Eric & Sarah great reaction next time Top Gun: Maverick
Love Val Kilmer as Ice Man
Young Tom Cruise and rest of the brat pack good in the movie Taps.
My folks and I saw this in the original theatrical run. It was supposed to be for my Dad's birthday, but given my complete obsession with fighter jets, it was probably for me. I loved every moment of the movie. The next morning, Dad woke me up before dawn, and took me yo work with him. He was stationed at NAS Oceana, the US Navy's east coast Master Jet Base. He sat me out on the back porch of the air ops building with a couple of disposable cameras, and a pocketful of change for the snack and drink machines inside the building. I spent the whole day, taking pictures of F-14s, F-18s, A-4s and A-6s, flying over the base. I even scored a couple of squadron patches. Best memory of my childhood!!
Wait until you see the sequel Top Gun Maverick !
Top Gun Maverick is a must 🤘🤘
Guys always a pleasure watching your reactions with you 🐻
I can see why they say, “low on gas” to make it easier for the audience. The correct term all military aviators use would be “Bingo Fuel”, which means just enough to fly A to B and the farthest alternative plus reserve
Top Gun Maverick was nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture but won for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
Speaking of Oscars, Everything Everywhere All At Once won 7:
Best Picture
Best Director
Best Film Editing
Best Original Screenplay
Best Actress, Michelle Yeoh
Best Supporting Actor, Ke Huy Quan.
Best Supporting Actress, Jamie Lee Curtis.
Both are on our list for the very near future 😉
No, don't get to Top Gun Maverick "at some point." Get to it soon. Think of today's filmmaking capabilities compared to the 80s. Plus It's genuinely a great film. It has a spot on the top earners of all time for a reason...
IMO this is the movie that made Tom cruise a super star ✨
Viper insisting on Maverick going up in the air immediately and letting go is pretty accurate portrayal of Vietnam war era fighter pilot. Back then, when a pilot got killed during a mission over the North Vietnam, where the losses were staggering as Viper mentioned, pilots who made it back usually said "you can't dwell on it past first beer" as the mission rate was pretty high and morale needed to be maintained. No time to grief.
I have enjoyed your reaction and you have earned a new subscriber. Keep it up :)
After you experience a traumatic event, the longer you dwell on what happened, thinking about and (over) analyzing it, the less chance there is of you resuming that activity (commonly called "getting back on the horse").
When carriers are deployed, they maintain an "exclusion zone" around themselves. They are our most valuable capital ships and we don't want bad guys to sink them. Naturally, other countries push the boundaries to see what they can learn. That was what was happening at the beginning of the movie.
At the end, there was a real situation with real bad guys. They had a mission to protect the evacuation alluded to and to protect the carrier group. It was a real shooting situation. The earlier event could have become a shooting event if the intruders had not desisted but, when locked upon, they bugged out so it never became a shooting event.
In real life Iceman, Hollywood would not have been sent to that carrier, assuming that's the carrier Maverick came from. The pilots at Top Gun are all from different squadrons after graduation they would return to their squadron. I guess it could be possible if an Admiral decided the situation needed the best, he could issue temporary assignment.
Maverick flew into Ice's exhaust, there wasn't enough oxygen left in that air to keep his engines running so they stalled.
Don’t wait for some point to watch, watch it now while the original is fresh in your mind
Legaleagle watched this with a Jag officer. He said he would have been court martialed several times in this movie. Buzzing the tower accounted for a few of them. Merlin was Tim Robbins from Shashank.
It's interesting that today's reactors take issue with the timeframe of Mavs grieving. At the time, and throughout even the 90's to 2000's pushing him was the acceptable response from both Viper and Charlie with her quitting speech...as someone who grew up on this movie I appreciate being able to view those scenes with a different lens, right or wrong.
Top Gun shot here in San Digo kansas barbecue is still here in down town.
They had to get Tony Scott (RIP) to direct this as Michael Bay was still in college at the time. 😄
The trick to getting all that equipment on film at an affordable price is to give the US Navy enough control over the story that they'll fully cooperate with you. The "flame out" which killed Goose was a real issue with early F-14s; a stunt pilot was actually killed filming the "inside the canopy" shots of the flat spin (not sure if that was the footage used in the film or not). Also kind of funny that Charlie's opening comments at her first briefing with the class were comparing the MiG-28 to the F-5 (F-5s "played" the MiG-28 in the movie).
The combat scenario at the end of the movie was _very_ loosely based on an actual US Navy engagement known as the First Gulf of Sidra Incident, involving Libyan aircraft.
Unpopular opinion: "Playing With The Boys" was the best Kenny Loggins song on this soundtrack. 😝
EDIT: Oh, Top Gun was a part of pretty much everybody's home video library when it was released on video tape. This was partly because the movie itself was so popular, but mainly because they were able to sell it _much_ cheaper than other first-release movies by including a Top Gun-themed Pepsi commercial at the beginning.
Early F-14s were powered by a pair of Pratt & Whitney TF30 engines that had been designed for the F-111B, which was more multi-role bomber than fighter. The engines were powerful but they were not meant to perform some of the high angles of attack and the way fighter planes do. The engines were just to sensitive for this role. When an engine would burn out the powerful lift from the position of the engines would often cause the F-14 to flat spin. An F-14 pilot was often told fly the engine not the plane when piloting an F-14. These engines were later replaced with a more reliable engine. The ejection system of the F-14 was certified for 0-0 ejection (on the ground and at rest), and the canopy would be thrown backwards by an explosive charge. In a flat spin, a case not anticipated during development, it is possible that the canopy stays trapped in the turbulent, separated flow above the airplane, and then the first seat to come out has a chance of hitting it. So the situation of hitting the canopy is not impossible. Though in a flat spin in an aircraft that large by the time the canopy cleared the jet would have rotated. There had been earlier and other situations where the crew did hit the canopy upon ejection. Nothing is impossible but I have heard critique from other pilots and ones that have flown the F-14 this most likely would not have happen. Plus the accident that happens in the movie seems not do to the F-14 TF30 engines but flying into the jet wash of another aircraft.
And the Captain on the carrier is also the same actor as Principal on Back to The Future
Maverick... You're a slacker!
Your father was a slacker!
HIS father was a slacker!!
Waiting for top gun maverick ❤️
90 reactions and no one mentioning the very unknown (at that point of time) Tim Robbins as Merlin. He would later play a starring role as the lead in The Shawshank Redemption.
Look, the music budget is the music budget, you get the songs you get for the budget! Just use 'em over and over again, make it work!
😂
I'm really enjoying this. And I've seen a billion reactions. But this is extraordinarily Good. I'm surprised you guys don't have 300k subscribers, and I'm pretty freaking picky. You picked up on almost every important line of dialogue, missed almost nothing, and your editor was great.
Wow, thanks so much! :D
The man Charlie ( Kelly Mcgillis) met in the officers club was Rear Admiral Pete (Viper) Pettigrew a real Top Gun instructor and the technical advisor for the movie.
7:09 REMEMBER that name!!!! “Penny Benjamin”, remember it!!!
Most don't 🤦😂
After this movie came out, the applications to the Navy and the Air Force increased by 500% from the year before!
Well you gotta watch the sequel!!
I hope you guys see the new sequel... sooooo good. Great reaction. Thank you. 😊
One of my favorite movies. One movie that is similar to this one that is one of my favorites you should react to is The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz.
It's' funny how you mention how long the credits are- in my era the credits were the credits- always about the same length. No one thought they were long. Also, when Mav goes into the ladies room-it used to be funny, inappropriate, definitely, but kinda ballsy too, but not threatening. But now, it just wierds everyone out. Interesting.
The character "Perry" is the actual pilot that "Maverick" is based around.
Ohh and please, please, please watch Top Gun Maverick soon while this movie is fresh in your mind.
you'll be glad you did.
This was the very first Tom Cruise movies I saw on VHS back in the early '90's. I was 4-5 years old when I watched this!
It made $360 million dollars ($900 million dollars today) against a $15 million dollar budget.
Hardly anyone realises that Cougar, and later Mav's rear Merlin is Tim (Shawshank) Robbins.
And also remember the name Goose whispers to Mav in the debriefing "Penny Benjamin" for later.
You should do Hot Shots now.
highest grossing movie of 1986!
Now, to watch Hot Shots!.
Hope you guys can do Top Gun Maverick if you haven't seen it. Oblivion is also excellent. (And Edge of Tomorrow hint hint lol)
You have to watch Top Gun Maverick now.
I was just made to feel ANCIENT. I was told there was no such thing as an American that hasn't seen Top Gun in the last 30 years. I was told this was an urban myth. Feeling crushed and near to death now.
The exhaust (jet wash) coming out of a plane doesn't have any oxygen. If a jet sucks up the jet wash the lack of O2 can cause an engine to flame out (not enough O2 to burn). The jet they were flying, the F-14 has substantial thrust in it's engines. when the starboard engine went out the port engine cause the plane to Yaw to the side of the flameout. Like blowing front tire on a car can cause you to spin out.
Excellent reaction that was alot of fun thanks!
Great reaction you two. Very funny. Glad you enjoyed it. Wait till you watch Top Gun Maverick. It's so damn good. It's on another level. You guys are going to really enjoy it.
Thanks Michael!
Great movie saw at the theater! Thanks Y’all!
you guys really should watch Top Gun Maverick...10 times better....one of the most beautiful film I ever seen..
Did u accidentally put the sequel on first before realising it was the wrong film? I ask as Top Gun has the classic static Paramount logo at the start unlike the modern 'flying stars' card I saw at the star of your video. It may have been replaced on the most recent home video releases but I had the VHS of this film when it first came out, upgrading to the DVD in 2000 before finally getting the 1080p BD in 2010 and the original logo remained on all of them (including the print blemish at the top right hand corner). Easily done if ur using digital versions.
Nope, we watched it on Netflix
@@EricSarahReact Interesting, did not realise it was on the platform (I am in the UK). Really appreciate you taking the time to respond!
The accident was caused buy what is called "wake turbulence". You can look it up to get a more detailed explanation.
The sequel is phenomenal.
Good movie 😊
Next up "Maverick" and "Hot Shots!"? 😁
You will meet Penny in Topgun Maverick
The fuel costs were the biggest costs of the film. It was one of the reasons it took so long to get the sequel done. Not the main reason but one.
Tom Cruise was the only one that had flown in a jet. All of the other actors got sick. The dialogue was so bad that in post production they redid all the dialogue and did voice overs. It worked because they are all wearing masks in the planes.
Tom Cruise "The Last Samurai" Thank me later.
Get ready for arguably the best legacy sequel in recent years 🧑✈️✈️
Eric and Sarah please please please do a reaction for UPGRADE 2018 it's a very underrated movie if many people know this it would have made lot of money at the box office. with just 3 million dollars budget they managed to make something amazing and spectacular than most Hollywood movies these with their big budget and popular actors but still failed impress the people. I highly recommend you should see this movie and you WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.
Here's some others you should watch too
Blade Runner (The Final Cut)
Ninja Assassin
Dark City
Children of Men
Nocturnal Animals
Memento
Burn After Reading
Black Hawk Down,I'd say the ending this movie is very inaccurate because a foreign military (Malaysia) helped the U.S army in the Somalia War. You can look it up
You guys are now ready for Hot Shots (and after Rambo 2, Hot Shots Part Deux)
Wait until you see Top Gun Maverick!
That’s how first dates were in the 80’s, just take a quick shower at the ladies pad!
Sarah ya cute. Keep reacting !!
Oddly enough, it's cheaper to make a movie using real planes than to CG it.
Watch " KISS KISS BANG BANG" ! trust me!
Pls watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid next
Now you've got to watch Top Gun: Maverick, which is even better than this film. 👍
I wish they'd cast someone else. Once you see a breakdown of how companies go about filming someone like Tom Cruise (lights, shadowing, weird upward angles) because he's so short, you can't unsee it. Feels like it dominates the whole movie.
I really wanted to enjoy your reaction but I had to squint to see your 1/8 scale screen. I was out in 2 minutes. Let us see at least 1/4 screen. Do better next time.
