Yessss! You have to watch Top Gun: Maverick now. The actors had to train because they filmed in actual fighter jets while flying - it’s so sick
You can watch BTS for Maverick and see how much the actors did - they even had to film themselves because they can’t have cam ops in the plane as well it’s so funnnn
So many great YT clips with the actors’ training.
For me it's even better than this one. It was OUTSTANDING saw it in IMAX.
Goose's head smashed into the canopy when they ejected.. sort of a freak accident. TG Maverick is one the best movie sequels ever.. perhaps even better than the original.
The canopy did not open properly when Goose was ejecting. He hit the canopy hard. It's shown clearly in the movie. How you guys missed it ☺️. And iceman is not a bad guy. He is simply a perfectionist and goes by the book while maverick break rules. I guess we need both types of people to achieve optimal balance. Yin and Yang.
Cannot explain how big this film was - fighter pilot school applications went through the roof! That singing scene at the bar is in pop culture history - and the sequel is arguably better! Tom does some of his own flying & the other characters were up in a plane with a pilot & had to undergo insane navy training to cope with the G Force - can’t wait til you see it!
I have been in that bar. Filmed in my hometown
Guys love your reaction! This movie was HUGE in the 80’s-was ahead of its time with special effects & sound and of course a great cast. Anthony Edwards played Goose.
Goose died b/c he hit the canopy during the ejection really hard.
Maverick threw the dog tags at the end to let Goose go in a way. Viper said “you gotta let him go” earlier.
This one is good but the sequel is arguably better cause they actually have cameras in the cockpit it’s crazy still a good movie regardless also just wanted to say have loved these movie week reactions
The actors in the Jets in the sequel.... 100% Real!! NO CGI! SUCH AN AMZING MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It amazes me that no matter how many reactors watch this none of them can ever understand what happened to Goose. I don’t understand. You see them about to crash and needing to eject. Then you hear maverick say “Eject! Watch the canopy!”. Finally you see them eject, fly up and the guy in the back (Goose) smashes into the canopy. It’s absolutely cut and dry. It’s spelled out for you in words and action. But every time it comes to this part every single reactor in hundreds of videos say “I don’t understand. What happened to Goose?” Ummmmm…..what?!
The canopy not clearing during ejection was an actual, real problem with the early block F-14s. They eventually fixed it.
I don't get how they miss it either...
The second movie is even more phenomenal. I cried just at the first few seconds when Kenny Loggin's iconic song started playing.
Yes that beginning music… phenomenal choice to start the second movie! 🙌🏼
11:35 - That old guy she sits down with is retired Navy Admiral Pete Pettigrew, the real life OG Viper and Top Gun instructor as well as the consultant & advisor for the film.
He's also the reason Maverick's first name is Pete
"If anything happens to Goose… Game over!" "Hopefully nothing." Oh, boy…
So you three guys put a smile on my face from the beginning of your reaction right through to the end!
I was 16 years old when this movie came out (and I was training for my glider pilot's licence in the Canadian Air Cadets) so Top Gun is pretty near and dear to my heart. I'm 52 now and my flying days were a long time ago. I enjoyed every minute of you guys watching this!
About tossing Goose's dog tags into the Ocean at the end- Goose's tags was a visual representation of Maverick's guilt over Goose's death. So throwing them into the Ocean was symbolic that he had let go of feeling responsible for his death and could move on with a clear conscious.
I surely hope you three react to the sequel "Top Gun: Maverick" it is as good, if not (gasp) better than Top Gun!
about that time of year when i make my rounds of watching top gun/top gun maverick reaction and this one is still one of my favorites
1. An old shipmate of mine was on the Enterprise when they filmed this.
2. Gooses death was not Maverick's fault. Iceman was bogarting his LOS approach and they got caught in the jet wash.
3. I spent 24 years in the US Navy. 6 on "bird farms" (Carriers). I have seen 1000+ launches and landings without a single crash.
These men and the men working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Shout out😎
4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a great movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT
5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong. "I wasn't looking at his neck man"
6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone"
7. Goose was Mavrick's RIO (Radar Information Officer).
8. Onboard the ship the Squadron leader would not be smoking a cigar in that operation space.
9. Meg Ryan is my honey. A great overlooked movie with her is with Tom Hanks called, "Joe vs the Volcano' She plays 3 parts. HINT HINT
10. Onboard the ship/aircraft all the perspiration is Hollywood(not the pilot). There is AC onboard.
11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. It's now at NAS Fallon, NV.
12. In 1991 I was stationed on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and they made a movie onboard called "Flight of the Intruder".
It was seriously cool. Brad Johnson, Willem DeFoe and Danny Glover. I'm actually in it for a very brief period of time. It's better than this. HINT HINT.
13. Watching/sharing the new "Top Gun Maverick" is a must. The ariel work in that movie makes this one seem like they were practicing. Best of all, it has a plot
It's not better than this lol
@@kathleenclark815 At leastn it has a plot
@@williamjones6185 And so does this.
This was the first Tom Cruise movie I saw on VHS when I was 4 years old!
It's also my dad's favorite movie.
It won the Oscar for Best Original Song, Take My Breath Away.
It made $360 million dollars ($900 million dollars today) against a $15 million dollar budget.
Mine was Legend. If you've never seen it you should. When I was a kid Tim Curry was terrifying as Lord Darkness LOL
You guys should watch the 2 top gun movie it was so good !!!! you would love ittt
Can't wait to see your reaction to Top Gun Maverick! It's honestly the best movie I've seen in a really long time!
I’ll put it this way… Top Gun is a great movie.. Top Gun Maverick is one of the best movies ever made imo
g'day from Australia! watching you from my balcony with my wine and weed, I love your stuff and I'll be watching silver linings straight after this!
How have you never seen this movie?!? Loved the reaction ❤ nice one fellas 😊
I remember buying the Top Gun soundtrack on cassette tape.
Same! Wore that thing out :)
In the restaurant/bar scene with the piano, you can actually go and eat there. Kanas City Barbeque is in San Diego. You can also visit Charlie's house. It was always considered a historical landmark here in Oceanside, but they recently turned it into a pie shop called High Pie.
Yep. 10 miles from where I live in San Diego
I’ve been there! So fun!
You guys HAVE to watch Maverick on here
Great job gentlemen. This movie ended up being a great recruitment tool for military flyer programs.
Classic movie , I can not BELIEVE none of you have see this! this should be a good one!
I love this movie and I got to see the new Maverick movie in the IMAX theater it blew me away it was so good.
Great reaction, guys! Cant wait to see ya for Top Gun Maverick! The Hard Deck is an imaginary safety altitude representing the ground. Below that means they would have become smoking holes in the ground during training. Navy Fighter Pilots are the best. They do all that Air Force pilots do, plus land on a ship. That's why their Wing badges are made of gold while the Air Force's are made of lead...😄! Fly Navy!
such a great movie and the second is incredible as well
The tags in the ocean is a sign of Honor
Any plans to react to Top Gun Maverick?? It’s such a great story and has amazing flight scenes.
putting out s tier movies left n right damn!
Great review of a great movie! Now we're waiting for the review of the sequel. :-p
Some notes:
The enemy is never declared, though that they're flying MIG-28 fighter jets, a Russian made plane that was sold to several Soviet bloc countries in the 80s, narrows down the possibilities.
Cougar's having a panic attack. His eyes keep getting drawn back to the picture of his wife and kid, a kid he's never met, and he needs help to get back. And, against orders, Mav goes to give it to him.
Iceman is so close for intimidation factor. Standard face down tactics.
"You're the one." She's heard about the encounter between Maverick (and Goose!) and the MIG. She recognizes that he's the pilot in the report.
You're not allowed to drop down below the hard deck, nor follow anyone who does as an escape maneuver like Jester did. Penalties for doing so can be severe. The hard deck is set above any potential impediments to safe flying, such as power lines, towers, mountain ranges, you get the idea.
The Army Air Corps was split off to become the Air Force around WWII. Both the Navy and their technically subsidiary branch, the Marines, have their own air forces. Naval and Marine aviators are the only ones eligible to go to Top Gun. I suppose that Naval aviators could technically be called sailors, but calling them a sailor will generally piss them off since they are all officers.
Because of the flat spin, when jettisoned the canopy was not left behind as usual. It was caught in the spin. It was shown, but wasn't always clear to see, that Goose ejected into it, slamming into it full force with the back of his head and neck, likely killing him instantly. R.I.P. Goose. :-(
Ice wasn't at fault. Mav wasn't at fault. It's just some sh!t that happens. Going through the jet wash can cause several issues: it can cause engines to stall or the plane to lose stability making it hard to control. Whatever it did, it caused the plane to go into an uncontrollable flat spin out to sea. With the engines impacted there was no power for Mav to use to counter the spin, and none of what he tried was working. Still, Goose was dead, and that was basically Mav's brother since he was otherwise an only child and orphan. A loss as devastating as any that can be imagined, and it can lead to the same loss of confidence that made Cougar turn in his wings. Viper and Jester try to get Mav back up on the bike (effectively) again so he can overcome his fears and rediscover his confidence in the safer environment of Top Gun. They don't want Mav to end up like Cougar. Losing two Top Gun caliber pilots from the same squadron can be devastating for morale.
And, if anyone could be said to be at fault, it would have to be on Mav for following too close on Ice's tail. But that's not an unusual maneuver either. Just something that happens.
Iceman actually does care. He's concerned for his fellow pilots and RIOs and, though he doesn't always approach it well, he does mean well when he tries to advise Maverick throughout the film. Maverick has earned the callsign he was awarded (callsigns aren't chosen by the pilot as much as given to the pilot by others by general acclaim. Thus the wild untamed horse fits Pete, just as the calm, cool, almost cold name fits Tom. And we can all see how Nick earned the name he did, when Tom/Iceman calls him by the full name "Mother Goose" when they are all meeting for the first time) and demonstrates it by lashing out or closing up against advice he doesn't want.
Iceman is, technically, the better pilot. He holds to the restrictions and can take the rigors of the job. Maverick is considered to be less than Ice because he makes a lot of bad judgements and poor decisions and while he often makes them work, that's not what the Navy wants because they need everyone held to a standard so all pilots know exactly how their wingmen will work with them instead of worrying about one freelancing as Mav often does. Goose was Mav's conscience who would back him up but who would also keep his more dangerous impulses in check at least half the time. Goose was the rock that allowed Mav to be Mav, and without Goose Mav feels completely adrift.
Sundown isn't Mav's new RIO, he's just flying with him to get him back in the air at Top Gun. He'll be getting a new RIO when he returns to his squadron. Possibly Cougar's old RIO? :-p
I don't remember who the other aviator is who was asking Sundown about Mav at the graduation, but it shows the concern they all have for each other. Even if they don't always get along.
"These MIGs are terrible." They're not, actually. It's just that the training that our military pilots had was the best in the world at the time. Many air units were trained to just fly, fire and forget, not worrying so much about any kind of dogfighting skills beyond basic evasion and maneuvering. It would be like me, at 54 with balance problems from repeated concussions, trying to get through a Motocross course faster than a professional racer. Just not gonna happen. :-D Plus, Ice has a slight additional advantage. He's flying fully defensively while the others are trying to shoot him down, and they have to worry about hitting their friendlies a lot more than Ice does. :-D
I mean, we don't know. As a member of the Navy Goose's will could request a burial at sea, but odds are against that. But the symbolism of Maverick letting Goose go is there, though we all know Goose will always be on his mind as his best friend and brother.
Have fun watching the sequel. It blows this one away. Seriously. Just the fact that the cockpit flying scenes are done with all the actors in the cockpit (in the back seat of course) of planes being flown by real aviators so that you can SEE and HEAR how the real G-forces affect them is just incredible.
Part of the reason these jets were retired was a known flaw in the ejection where the canopy didnt move out of the way and they struck it on the way out.
No it was simply corrected by adding a longer delay for ejection. The problem only happened while in a flat spin
Still waiting for a Maverick react! I daresay it may even be better than the original ❤
Special effects? There were no special effects. It's all real footage. No CGI! That is what makes it so good.
Fun fact. The guy Charly sat with at the bar is the real pilot Viper was based on.
TOp Gun maverick is good because they actually have the actors in the back of the jets in most scenes
Definitely gotta do the sequel.
Dang guys, you really point out my age, without pointing out my age. Still ❤️ you cuties!
Filmed in my hometown of San Diego. I was 13. It was a big deal back then
Great authentic reaction, you guys actually tried to understand what's going on instead of talking too much. You have to understand back in 86 the Cold War was in full swing, and these cat and mouse games were frequent.
Watching you fall in love with goose knowing what was coming...
Top Gun Maverick is an insane movie u guys have to react to it!!
You should watch the second movie!! It's one case where the sequel is better than the original.
90’s??this was the mid 80’s Guys…. Almost 40 years ago! Also .. whenever they were standing face to face, Tom was standing on a Box cause she is taller than him😬
I'm here for white briefs making a comeback
dese 3 Cats here are 4 REEL ! ..
This came out when I was a Sophomore in high school and my twin sis and a friend and I saw it three times in one weekend. 😄 But, I still think the new Top Gun: Maverick is a better movie, which says a lot.
This movie is a classic but now you have to watch top gun maverick. That movie was beyong incredible and emotional as fuck. One of the best sequels ever.
Did you guys miss Tim Robins as Merlin?
there's so many things wrong with this movie I don't have time to list all of them. for one, Maverick could have been brought up on charges for a number of things( flybys, going into the ladies room, disregarding a direct order from a senior officer at least twice). there's also no trophy for Top Gun as it would lead to too much competition (we're all on the same team). in the final engagement Maverick says he'll be there in 30 seconds (he's 150 miles away according to the radio man). I could go on for hours but....
Miles teller😂😂😂
Why do all of these reactions miss goose hitting the canopy?
Wait until y'all react to Maverick
Can't this anymore..............What is this...... what is a Mig. What is top gun. What is he chewing on. Bye
14:50 naaa I like the “… what if they ran into a mountain…” question.
The second largest Air Force in the world is the US Navy lol.
pls react to a korean movie "A werewolf boy". it's the most amazing movie that i'v ever seen
It make me cry everytime
@@darle7687 yeah
Goose might’ve set the record for the least painful death in cinema. Shame that didn’t apply to the viewer 😢
Theory time. Tom Cruise has embarrassingly small chicken legs. Proof? Have you EvER seen his legs? He’s always wearing jeans when he should be wearing shorts. He knows he looks nice in jeans. He fears what he looks like in shorts.
That'd be hilarious if it were true, but sadly he shows them in Maverick
@@mindime1499 when? I could have sworn he wore jeans during the football game
Guess you haven’t seen Risky Business.. No chicken legs
No single guy training for Top Gun is Gonna pack shorts for a business trip. Goose had a wife who did his packing . Last thing Toms character as thinking of when headed to Top Gun was hanging at the Beach. Trust me
@@paulamoya7956 that was 1983. I still think we’re dealing with less than spectacular legs here. And as far as the packing being done by a single guy…. Really?
This is the gayest straight movie to exist. I love it.
