3 Day Solo Firewood Haul at My Cabin in the Woods

  • In this video I gather firewood for my off grid cabin in the woods. I drive my truck down the nearby forest roads to find dead trees that have fallen into the roadside ditches and turnouts. Using my Makita xcu04 electric battery powered chainsaw, I cut the logs into pieces that I split and stack.
    Thanks for watching!

Another great video Diego you are such a hard working man. The water is amazing. I just have to say 1 thing. I know you were getting firewood for yourself but I was really surprised that not 1 person that passed you stopped and offered to at least help you with the road clean up. Because it benefited them that you cleared the road. God Bless

Diego, for the future, you find three branches that are about 8 feet long, you tie them together top and bottom, and use it as a makeshift ramp to roll the round into your truck bed. It's not worth blowing your back out.

I enjoy watching you be excited to live off grid and learning to do things you've never tried before! I think your relationship with your 83 year old neighbor is wonderful and I can tell he relishes it too!
I have a suggestion about your wood gathering. I've have gathered my own firewood for about 45 years. one trick I learned was to not block all my wood in the field. It uses a lot of energy and time. Cut your logs about 6" long and stack those in your truck. Especially the 12" and under diameter logs. Since you use battery powered chainsaw you would make fewer cuts in the field and make your batteries last longer. Then cut the logs to length at home where you have more time and a generator to charge batteries. Just a thought!
    Good Luck!

Diego, I admire your hard work & love your channel. You are going to be at 100k followers soon. One tip I've seen for cutting firewood to the correct size fast is attach a bar either 16" or whatever measurement you want to the saw. Then make all your "measurement" cuts, remove the size guide and get to work. I've seen magnetic ones that pop on and off and then seen guys drill a hole in the bar, run a rod and nut through it. One of the things I learned the hard way was how many times you touch the wood. It all comes back to time and energy. Do whatever you can to limit the times you limit the amount of times you touch the wood. The guy with the trailer in the start of the video could possibly have a cheap harbor freight winch, pull up large logs onto the trailer then cut them up when home next to the wood pile. It's an investment for sure but with the time savings you might think about it. Especially if you find a beat up trailer you can DIY fix. Good luck bother.

    New subscriber here.
When you split (fire)wood use a technique call 'boxing'. This is when at the EXACT MOMENT your bit's edge of your splitting maul/axe strikes the block of wood you 'flick' (lean the top part of your axe/maul rapidly to the left or right, your choice) causing the block to split rapidly, ("fly apart") while using less body energy to swing the maul/axe. My dad showed me this method at my 11 year age. "Boxing blows" are very easy to learn. Try it in some good splitting wood.
I split red oak (usually one blow per split) firewood here in my area with a double bit 3.5lb axe, lighter to swing, yet very efficent.

One of the biggest things I learned when hand splitting is to get an old tire that fit a 20" rim, put the piece or pieces in the tire, keeps them from going everywhere and saves yourself from bending down and re-adjusting them again to re-split. Got my tire for free at the local gas station.

For room and board I did firewood, 6 1/2 years we did 6 chords a month and it is possible to do that much. All I did was split toss and stack now I would like to share a secret with you if you have a round that you're splitting and it's just working against you turn it over. I kid you not a friend of mine that was a Forester taught me that the growth needs to be at the bottom the root end up in the growth and down, for what it's worth and I'm just trying to help. I'm watching your channel and I'm really enjoying it every time I hear a storm hits and a tree falls here in Southern Cal.all I can think of is that firwood . Look at all the firewood wow😊.

Having the electric chainsaw is definitely nice in certain situations. Like where he cut an awkward piece off a log when he was splitting. But, I can't imagine this wouldn't have been a million times easier with a 20"-24" bar on a gas chainsaw.

    • @inceneration
      @inceneration 6 месяцев назад +3

i agree. Gaspowered Chainsaws tends to have higher cutting power and more horsepowers to get through bigger pieces. I would also agree with the people saying that long logs of 10 foot or so would be better seeing that the bending and walking constantly back and forth is more exhausting than picking up 3 smaller logs than picking up one long log. Its the same amount of weight in the end. The question is just how fast you can do it without breaking your back xD

Diego, I can see a Great couple of tools for you to bring with you next time you go out for wood. A Log Cant ($60 new, cheaper at a garage sale if you can find one) and a good garden rake. The Cant will make it easier to get the logs where you want them and be able to spin the log to get the bottom cut and the rake will be a lot easier to rake up the small branches off the road. Just a thought

Hey man, this is one of my first time watching your videos and funny enough, it was the episode where you talk about electric motors and batteries. I am a electrican, electrical tech and ElectroMotor mechanic.
Electric run motors in power tool equipment run more efficiently at running rpm that is with no resistance Aka when your not cutting. So the higher the RPM the less battery you use. Also keeping the motor cool, cool is good same as the batteries but not freezing or cold. Also if you are constantly discharging batteries that can cause heat and over time damage. So don't charge them right after they die giving them a chance to cool down it will charge faster and use less energy to charge, because heat = resistance.
Enjoyable content man keep it up.

In my younger years we burned wood for heat and
had many stacks like what you have till someone decided they had to have our split stacked wood that was tarped. Luckily they didn't get too much, maybe a pickup load. Then we put it all under the house where it stayed.

Good evening from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Nice job on cutting up the fallen trees. You need to build yourself a storage shed to store your firewood.

Something so satisfying about chopping wood or hell, even watching someone chop wood haha. But after watching this, I'm very happy I opted for a gas powered chainsaw. I couldn't imagine carrying around 10 batteries, a charging station and generator and having to swap them out constantly. Seems like it's a little early on the electric tech to do any big jobs. Fun to watch though, thanks for filming and posting it.

Cheers Mate from OZ .. Enjoy your vids . You seriously need to upgrade to a petrol 18 or 20 inch Chainsaw and still take your Makita as a backup incase you get jammed . It would speed up your cutting time and allow you to take bigger or better trees easier and safer . A couple of nylon wedges are handy if you get bar jammed as well . Can appreciate how tired you were after 3 days .. Coming into winter here soon ..JR

I don't know anything about burning wood for heat in the PNW. Here in Tennessee, we only burn hardwood, which takes at least a year to dry before it burns well. What is the species you cut and how long will it take to dry? Will a fire last through the night or does the wood you cut burn too fast? What caused the first tree to fall...blowdown, lightning, or what? I can't imagine using a battery chainsaw to cut firewood. Anyway, good on you for clearing the road.
