Greeting Mr Ralfy and thank you for another great video. Mine arrived yesterday and looks like an 11 yr old. It says distilled in 2009 bottle 2020. Can't wait to try it on the weekend. I managed to get it at a reasonable price.i joined their news letter and got 20% off, yay
Love how you say it like it is Ralfy! I watch some people do the swirl over and over and over and they keep saying it's good for the whisky! Total theatrics! You rock! Cheers!
Hi Ralfy, when I got in touch with Benromach a few months back, and asked them about colouring they assured me that in no Benromach whisky is colour added. Slàinte Ralfy P.S I prefer the peat smoke bourbon matured.
@@Servanus771 similar experience here - had a sample from a friend and liked it, then ordered a 1L bottle (not marked as duty free, but made for it), and it was very bland.
I always up-end my bottle after pouring a dram. My reason is to wet the cork so it pops better when I open it again. I now have a legit reason for doing that now. Cheers Ralfy
i saw a video of an expert do that 'throw the first pour away' and i was like wtf - the only reason to do that must be to help the producers sell more bottles.
I remember Ralfy recommending double-decanting a year or so ago, I can testify it works great. Simple, no frills, not tacky, highly effective. This is the kind of easy simple advice I need. No one else has these kinds of sensible "whisky hacks". EDIT: Still wondering why no Glencairns are used for the past several reviews. I recently watched the latest _Whisky In The 6,_ and Rob didn't use one either. He elaborated the Glencairn opening isn't large enough to fit your nose into easily, and that, to him, it concentrates the alcohol burn a bit more. He still used a tulip-shaped glass though, which I expected, as it had a slightly larger nose and the alcohol burn was lessened.
Yes, there is a sherry culture around whiskies. I enjoy sherry cask whisky, however my favourite whiskies tend to be lightly coloured and smokey. I have done the hand rubbing thing but stopped with it as I tend to smell more of if you washed your hands or not. AND "rolly rolly, no shaky shaky" 🥰
When I get an angry tight whisky, I leave the top off a few hours, then add a few drops of water. Then I put the cap on and SHAKE it like Humphrey Bogarts shakes a woman for about 45 seconds. Then I take the cap off and leave it overnight. Almost always works for me.
I find every bottle opens up a bit after a dram and some time in the cupboard. Though I will say I loved that Benromach Peated Sherry from the moment I opened the bottle and the youth note comes through wonderfully.
Just last week i had an Benromach tasting session and we had the contrast series peated sherry and peat smoke (the one Ralfy has here) next to each other. We all prefered the sherried one by quite a margin. The peat smoke isn't bad, but it misses the spirit an Islay bottling has which keeps it from being special. Gotta say, their CS vintages so far have been very good and not too exppensive either so they've got a good thing going there.
Tell Jim McEwan MBE about your opinion on shaking glass covered by the hand He did that with a cask sampling in the Water of Life movie (in which you made a few appearances) Was he doing that for show at the prompting of the director? I assume you think well of Mr. McEwan -- I was quite pleased to hear his story All I know is that I very much enjoyed the movie 🙂
Back in the day when I was younger and drank a lot more, among our friends it was considered a "party foul" to spill alcohol (whether beer or liquor), and you got punched in the arm for it.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I saw you chuck the malt overboard Ralfy ! Keep calm now, theatrics over.....back to roly, roly not shakey, shakey OK? There's only so much drama a fella can take 😉.
I noticed that too. Daniel does it too. I've tried it before a couple times, I suppose it's ok but it's just more weird than anything else. Didn't do anything meaningful for me.
Nobody who takes whisky seriously cares what those folks think. They just shoot one tasting after another, usually visibly drunk, no careful preparation. Seems like their only passion is for sheer volume of reviews, which explains the huge audience. I'm glad they're able to get rich off of it, no envy here, but I never learn anything useful from their videos. It's just a personality cult disguised as whisky circus 😂
Today is a good day. Usually I watch your work in the morning and it's too early to drink. Today I had chores until evening and have a dram in hand as I watch this. The end of a bottle of Ardnamurchan. Slàinte mhath.
Does the decanting into another bottle method also work for whiskies that are polar opposite to the Benromach? I’ve got a Tobermory 12 and it feels either restrained/inert or very, very locked away flavour wise - would this agitation also work on that?
How do you feel about non barley whiskies being referred to as single malt? I’ve seen some people call 100% malted rye whiskies (like Old Potrero) single malt rye whiskey.
I've been decanting an Edradour 10 SFTC into two large bottles because it just would not open up. I slowly get better results each time I pour it. It's got poor ratings on WB which are justified for the not opened up version. Concerning the splashing, I've always found it ridiculous and fitting to come from the embassador of the most boring and overpriced brands. If you want to get rid of odors in the glass you can just carefully wet the glass with whisky rolling it around. Looks professional as well without looking like a douchebag.
He complains about people being pretentious when tasting whisky without acknowledging that he is one of the most pretentious, presenting his opinions as facts!
A long time ago, you mentioned using a wine aerator. I got one back then and have used it a few times over the years. Last week I used it on a tequila and it's much nicer now.
Ralfy in a Richard Paterson mode 😃
hahah ....we all know.......
lol say the quiet part out loud
As a certified sommelier who converted from wine to whisky in 2016 I agree 110% with this video.
That's why I prefer bourbon, guaranteed natural colour, and a fresh cask every time, not aged in some cask thats been used several times.
"What service does it purpose?" Ralphy is enjoying that Benromach

Recommended for the Glenfarclas 105 ( in my opinion), it did wonders.
My most recent bottle of 105 is definitely not as good as previous bottlings I’ve picked up - even allowing for it being young 3-6 yrs ?

It just hurts to see you "agitating" your glass like that 😂
😂Ralfy Patterson!🤣
You can still see Dalmore Master blender Richard Paterson pour a whisky into a Glencairn Copita whisky glass and swirl it and throw it out on RUclips

I've seen plenty of theatrics over the years , but that shaking the drink , then licking the palm takes the cake!
i saw a video of an expert do that 'throw the first pour away' and i was like wtf - the only reason to do that must be to help the producers sell more bottles.
Lucky the cats didn't walk in when you were splashing that whisky around! 🤣😺Cheers!

Fluffy the cat is now covered in Benromach's finest 😸

I'm buying a good kitchen funnel tomorrow. Should've years ago. Thanks, Ralfy!
I'm doing this right now !! Great video and knowledge sharing.

WARNING!! There is a lot of whisky being spilt in this episode! Viewer discretion advised!

You've just described my thoughts on the new Ardnahoe Inaugual Release.

Uh-oh, that palm nosing technique is featured in Whisky Tribe. I wonder what Rex and Brianna would say haha

Morning from Western Australia
I see that “nosing your hand” business and immediately hear my mum. Quit sniffing your hand! Don’t you know where that thing has been?!?
🤭😅😅😅🥂🥂🥂🙋♂️

Otherwise people will think you’re an “arsehole” 😂 gold. Keep it coming Ralfy!
Thanks for the Malty review brother...
I tried about dozen different whisky glasses, none of them better than regular glancerian

Bloody hilarious episode this was 😂
What do distillers do with the stuf (oils and so on) that they filter out of their whisky?
They can send them to me, c.o.d. 😋😋😋

Up next, Ralfy reviews a lovely Balblair?
Angel's share by Ralfy 🤭
100 years from now, it will be known as "Ralfy's share." No offense to the angels, of course.
Can liquor actually be " confused and over excited ? ". Just asking ......
Funnily, the first fusile whiskies were drunk by fussy fusiliers.
I'm smelling a Malt Mention, just replace the "m's" with "f's" 🤗
Nice shake :D

shaky shaky🤣
you make me laugh 😂😂😂😂❤
