    William Bennett just passed away, so sad, he was a brilliant oboe player. I remember Michael Tilson Thomas from his Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra days. He's an incredible conductor. I wish my conductor would have given me this much liberty when I played this solo. William did such a beautiful job with that solo. It takes a bit of air, no good place to breathe.

    Dear Mr. Bennett,
    Thank you for your beautiful playing.
    You will stay in our hearts for many, many more years to come.
    Rest in peace.
    It is so heartbreaking to see other beautiful faces in this video who have also passed away...

    I wonder if the audience back then realised they were listening to the ultimate rendition of this movement.
    This is beyond exceptional.

    "This is the melancholy feeling which comes in the evening when one sits alone, tired from work, having picked up a book but let it fall from one’s hands. A whole host of memories appears. And one is sad because so much is gone, past, and it is pleasant to remember one’s youth..." ---by Peter Tchaikovsky (1878)

      +Wonyeol Lee You took it out of my mouth... I only have memories now, memories of things and people that are never coming back.. of the music we listened to together... and there is only sadness and yearning..

  • @BytomGirl

    Absolute perfection,,, the music that permeates the soul, the oboe solo, the conducting and incredible orchestra... like being in a dream floating among the stars... I am coming back to it again and again...

    • @mydogskips2
      @mydogskips2 8 лет назад +1

      +BytomGirl I agree. It is played just a bit slower than most others, which to me is the perfect tempo. And the oboist, he just plays with such a soft and delicate tone, wonderfully nuanced expression, it's beautiful.
      The tonal balance of the orchestra is just amazing too, it's so smooth. And the phrasing is perfect as well, everything is so even; it really is as close to absolute perfection as I can imagine.

    • @BytomGirl
      @BytomGirl 8 лет назад

      mydogskips2 Thank you, that is exactly how I feel, it's even better to be in Davies Hall and listen to it live... I have been to many of SFS concerts as it is my local orchestra. This oboist sadly passed away shortly after this concert. RIP. Another perfection is Adagietto from 5th symphony of Mahler conducted by Bernstein, it's like a meditation for the soul.

    William Bennett.... RIP! A brilliant musician and wonderful person. He collapsed on stage during his performance of Strauss oboe concerto, He died a few days thereafter. How sad. :(

  • @oboeguy53
    @oboeguy53 11 лет назад +3

    I have played the Strauss Concerto and, even at age 28, I found it the most difficult composition ever written for the oboe - not only musically but for its superhuman physical demands (akin to trying to force the Pacific Ocean through a collapsed straw for 30 minutes). However, it also one of the most gorgeous compositions I have ever played. While it is sad that we have lost a great oboist, I suspect that Mr. Bennett died a happy person - doing what he loved - playing the music of heaven. RIP

    @ALBIBISBIS Not "self-indulgence" at all. You seem not to know how music like this gets made -- which is expert, collaborative, and carefully rehearsed -- not some kind of ego thing. In this case, the conductor worked with Bennett (the oboe) and Paulson (the bassoon) for exactly this effect, and they delivered as great professionals do. The oboe starts, in a simple, childlike way; then, the bassoon finishes, like the voice of years of wisdom. Try listening again, and you might catch it.

      The viola isn't acoustically proportionate to its range. The extra lobes on the side are meant to increase the size of the instrument so that it matches its range.

    You call that 'childlike'??? That's like a hippopotamus after swallowing an elephant! The movement's tempo marking is Andantino in modo di canzona which means that there needs to be a certain pace and that it is song-like (a song not a funeral march!).
