Putin will continue the war until the stockpiles are empty and he knows he is closer to death in one way or another these days. He personally had nothing to lose. OK, but - honestly - do the major nations of Africa (such as Nigeria, Ghana, Congo, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Kenya, Tanzania and Angola) understand (a) the enormity of what ruzzia is doing in Ukraine, and (b) that ruzzia's adventures in Africa are fundamentally aimed at destabilizing the continent in order to seize as much of Africa's natural resources as possible? The coups in places like Niger were not charitable enterprises for ruzzia and its erstwhile agent Wagner Group.

Problem is that many of the politicians and senior civil servants received their education from Russian or pro-Russian teachers. Plus, most African nations tend to have a knee-jerk reaction towards anything to do with western Europe. This means they have either had no contact with, or only positive experiences with, Russia. Sadly, this leads to a myopia with regards to Russia, and the leaders of these nations not seeing the repeated cultural and actual genocides and the tyrannical nature of Russia in the modern era. Actions that are far worse than those conducted by Western European nations in Africa (with the probable exception of Belgium, of all countries)

Gen. Zaluzhny and Pres. Zelensky are closer than most people realize. If there were occasional differences of opinion, that's to be expected, but they are both extremely capable and extremely dedicated to the nation. Gen. Zaluzhny's current role in London is key to Ukraine's ability to continue top-level support from the UK.

If you read about the relationships between the Chief of Staffs in both the US and UK during WW2, you find the same thing. Roosevelt and Marshall got along fairly well, although they did have their differences. Churchill and Alanbrooke were a bit different. One of my favorite quotes about the latter's relationships is, from Churchill's own words, “I thump the table and push my face towards him, and what does he do? Thumps the table harder and glares back at me.”

Ukraine Sold Crimea for 40 Billion dollars in 2010 for 32 years
According to the agreement, the lease of the Russian naval base in Sevastopol port will be extended for another 25 years, starting from 2017. The agreement also includes the possibility of extending the period for another 5 years if the parties deem it appropriate at the end of 25 years.
At the meeting of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in Kharkiv, Ukraine, on April 21, an agreement was reached to extend the lease period of the base, and in return, a 30 percent discount was provided on the natural gas prices sold by Russia to Ukraine.
Within the framework of the agreement he made with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Yanukovych extended the lease of the base by 25 years in return for purchasing natural gas from Russia at a 30 percent discount. The agreement also includes an article stating that at the end of 25 years, the period can be extended for another 5 years if the parties deem it appropriate. With the agreement, the penal sanctions that Gazprom had previously imposed due to Ukraine's failure to fulfill its commitments were also cancelled.
Analysts stated that the cost of this agreement to Russia would be around 40 billion dollars in 10 years, based on current gas prices, and noted that the agreement, which was economically bad for Moscow, was extremely important politically and strategically.

Don't know if its brilliant - there were other places Valerii Zaluzhnyi could have been assigned - but definitely pragmatic. Ukraine can't afford to waste talent. His greatest value to Zelenskyy is that he's (so far) loyal and doesn't have a power base in either the bureaucracy or the state security apparatus. Appointing him ambassador to UK is a good way to keep a war hero close but not too close - keeping him in Kyiv could have made him a lightning rod for dissension politics even if that wasn't his intent. Meanwhile, his predecessor as ambassador (Vadym Prystaiko) comes from a politically connected family and was fired after criticizing Zelenskyy - he had to go, and Zaluzhnyi was available. Zaluzhnyi is only 50 yo, so he has time to develop his own political identity separate from Zelenskyy, if he so chooses. Just my two cents after doing a lot of googling.

I don’t fancy the chances of them being sent, though it would be great. The plus side about the F-16’s is the amount of countries who have people maintaining them in Europe right now. The F-15’s are only based at RAF Lakenheath in England when it comes to the USAFE. The only operators around the world if I remember correctly are the US, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and South Korea. Considering the lack of maintenance based in Europe, it would take years to have all the personnel trained up on the F-15E as well as training both pilots and WSO’s. There’s more chance of Ukraine being given some of the Typhoons and Gripen C’s, though again there will be training and maintenance to worry about.

@@mombaassa I remember that. Very embarrassing to the Soviets. Kudos to you for remembering his name! I don't believe Russia will ever be able to detect and shoot down small plane drones. They could shoot down their own people. Not that that matters to them, but which ones are drones and which ones are private planes. You may not even need a license in Russia for small private planes because they are used extensively in remote areas, like in Alaska.

The drones have to fly around 1.500 km, and they should have a speed like regular planes of this type. So it travels with around 160 km/h - 180 km/h or around 100+ mph. So it flies around 8 - 9 hours, and this drones are big. Over 2 times as long as shahed drones.
6 meters long, 9 - 10 meters wingspan, they are loud, fly low, so it tells a lot, that russians can't shoot them down, especially when you consider, USSR and Russia always focused on air defense, because they know, against the west they won't have air superiority.
So it's really embarassing, how the russian air defense fails, because the drones have to fly close to Belgorod and Kursk, and even there, air defense fails 🤦‍♂️

@@chrisb7198 The point is that when both Zelensky and Denys had the opportunity to flee Ukraine, one fled and one stayed. There is a further point to be made in that Zelensky continues to stay even though there have been several attempts on his life. Yes, you could argue that he is well protected, but if the attempts continue then one day they will succeed; it only takes one successful attempt. Zelensky and thousands of other Ukrainians stayed because their country needed them. Denys, at the first opportunity turned tail and fled and is now making money hand over fist reporting on a war he should be fighting in.

Targeting refineries has no impact on crude oil exports. It does however force Russia to make a choice of supplying military fuel, or civilian fuel. A side benefit is that it may force Russia to purchase refined fuel from other countries. Side note, when my Ukrainian wife and I visited Poland in 1998, that was the first time she had heard about Hitler and Stalin splitting Poland as allies.

  • @bdcochran01
    @bdcochran01 22 дня назад +1

    Modification of Denys' comments:
    1. a modular, basic refinery produces diesel (trucks, trains) and bunker oil (ships). Russia isn't getting diesel from Kazakstan. The contract negotiated is for tons of gasoline. Gasoline and aviation fuel require more than a modular refinery. 39% of delivery vehicle fuel in Russia comes from gasoline. There have been 232 small refineries in Russia and 34 mega refineries. The hits are on the large refineries capable of turning out multiple products. In good times and free access to technology and expertise, it takes at least two years to build a modular refinery.
The products from Kazakstan to the world go through Russia and are not targeted by the UA.
    2. Drones. Those are light aircraft designed in France and sold as assembly kits. The top speed is very low. They are programmed by AI to follow an embedded flight path which contemplates terrain in advance. This means no communication from the UA to guide and radio communications that are potentially blocked by Russian defenses. The only viable and potential defense is vehicle mounted heavy machine guns. However, the plane drones are silent, in view only for a few seconds and usually are undetectable by radar because they fly so low.
