  • We explore the small island Little Curacao and set sails to Los Aves Sotavento, the western Los Aves island group in Venezuela.
    Marlin is sailing upwind for some 24 hours, tacking along constantly heeled over some 20 degrees. The conditions are perfect and the crew is enjoying the ride!
    Enjoy and Ahoy,

      Los Aves and Los Roques were indeed very pretty, the water was just amazing and the people really friendly. Karl has actually been to Venezuela with his precious owners, I think they spent quite a while there. It seemed that the waters around the island were fairly safe, as long as you keep a decent distant from the mainland 🤞🏼

      Yes, I totally agree, Doug. I personally love the variety and the change, so for me the trip up north was a very beautiful experience since it was different to my experiences sailing closer to the equator. But it was great to be back in the Caribbean and explore and area that I had not seen yet, too!

      WhiteSpotPirates Whole darn ocean and they elect to poop on our boats. I had boats for 30 years on a lake here in NC. I moved up and then moved down in size. The smaller the boat, the more the fun. We have a condo at the NC coast and I kayak in the ocean. I am getting into surfing a regular SeaKayak. I have had my share of face plants, but for that modest price I get a few good rides. I am the oldest old fart out there. You should try to surf your kayak. Big fun! I have nine kayaks, from a sit on top to an 18 ft Kevlar that I used to race. It is narrow and quick.

    Aluminium.... is an alloy and sheet aluminium is usually made with slightly different alloys in layers, like a laminate, with the upper layer often a corrosion resistant layer. If you sand, grind or acid treat this surface too aggressively, you can accidentally remove the top protective layer. Also, with Aluminium, rust is known as corrosion... electrolysis is a bigger problem with this material as it can literally 'fizz' away quite quickly. You are actually better off not painting an aluminium boat, unless it's a very carefully prepared surface, etch prime with alumi-prep, rinse with fresh water, Alodine treatment, rinse with fresh water, then paint with a good quality epoxy primer. There are some excellent aluminium anti corrosion products such as AV-8 which actually coat the aluminium with a wax like substance, for areas that are not exposed to sun and rarely get disturbed, bildges etc.... with untreated/unpainted aluminium you get to see corrosion clearly and can deal with it immediately rather than when you see it bubbling under the paint. It's a great boat building material, but requires a little more careful inspection, maintenance and care than steel.

    Is it then save to sail around that Coast? Venezuela with its broken system, Columbia with the Drugslords and Fishermen who follow Sailboats? Hi Rover, the captain of Marlin has sailed this trip a few times and never had any trouble. For me, it was the first time, so I don’t have a ton of first hand experience. We made sure to stay a safe distance from the mainland and the islands seem pretty safe and from what I have heard from the few locals and sailors I talked to, they said the same. But then I have cruised up and down the pacific coast of Colombia and found it okay, so maybe I am not a good reference 😂

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  4 года назад

      How is it going with the German? Surely not an easy one to learn...you are right, manual would be translated correctly to Handbuch. But it’s one of the English terms that kinda found its way into the German language and some people use it like that. But Handbuch would be correct, so better stick with that. On top of that, when you speak a lot of English in your daily life, then some English terms sneak their way into your German language at times, so better don’t listen to us for some good pure German 😂 I wish you great progress and fun with learning German! Maybe you should write your comments in German instead to practice 😋

      They would look confused and ask me to repeat, after repeating a couple of times the German person would ask what is was in English and then their face would light up with the realisation that they finally understood what I was trying to say.
      This was a few years ago I have now progressed to the point where I can pronounce words well enough for people to understand which word I just said. Unfortunately it's usually the wrong word.
