  • Sardar Udham Review! Full Length Review! We discuss Shoojit Sircar's film, Sardar Udham, which tells the true story of Udham Singh, an Indian freedom fighter who assassinated Michael O'Dwyer in London in 1919. O'Dwyer led the horrific Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar that same year. Sardar Udham is an emotional, realistic look at the colonization of India by Britain, and how many lives were lost and affected.

"The late Prof. Harold Laski told a story about a conversation he had with an important Hindu leader."
"Said Laski to the Hindu: 'If India is granted her independence she will probably relapse into the anarchy which characterized the country when the British took it over"
"'Very likely,' replied the Hindu leader."
"'And this anarchy,' continued Prof. Laski, 'will probably be succeeded by a period of tyranny.'"
"'Very likely,' said the Hindu leader.'"
"'And,' continued laski, 'the period of tyranny will probably in turn be followed by a return of anarchy.'"
"'Very likely,' said the Hindu leader,' but this is the important thing: it will be our anarchy and our tyranny'"

Kathy saying that she didn't heard about this particular person in her history class is very much relatable for me even though I am an Indian and a history study ... Our textbooks hides such magnificent patriots from us and instead boast about the achievements of British. Films like this are a reality check to Indians themselves.... No chance of winning. With movies like Japan’s ‘Drive My Car’ or Denmark’s ‘ Flee’ or Germany’s ‘Compartment no. 6’, there is no chance of winning International feature with the shit they have sent as competition. …but anyways if Sardar Utham is sent for screenings on its own, there could be a one in a million chance of getting a best picture, screenplay or best actor nod. This happened with ‘Two Women’ in 1960, where Sofia Loren won best actress without the film winning a Foreign language, or any other nomination. Literally hoping for a miracle this year.

So, the first time Udham Singh went to London in 1931, he was not going to assassinate O'Dwyer. He went there to get support, in both International Recognition, as well as tools, weapons and money for the freedom fighters. HSRA, the party of Bhagat Singh, was gone, and Udham was one of the last active members. But all of his and his associates' work was for nothing, beacuse he could not gain any support, because of an internal informant. After many, many tries, he started stalking O'Dwyer. He did odd jobs for him, and there he saw that the man justified all that monstrosity back in 1919 Amritsar. THEN, he resolved to kill that guy.
Edit: Also, for those who do not know, the day the Jallianwalla Bagh Massacre happened, the date was April 13, 1919. It was Baisakhi. Almost all of the people there, they were celebrating a harvest festival, and did not live in Amritsar. They did not know, about the martial law.
It was evening. The bagh was filled with both the protestors and people who had been attending the annual Baisakhi fair. Dyer specifically chose his troops by ethinicity. They came in, and blocked all of the main exits. Then the troops were ordered to fire until they had no munitions left. Fuck, I can't write this

As long as the moment of the massacre seems onscreen, the director actually shortened it.
Until that massacre in that park in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar, Gandhi, the London educated lawyer, had worked to gain human and civil rights for Indians as British subjects under British law. He actually helped recruit the 1.25 Million Indian volunteers to fight under the British flag and to supply hundreds of tons of material goods during WWI.
This act of official mass murder was the final straw that tipped him over into the category of Revolutionary Freedom Fighter who finally recognized that there was no place left for British rule in India. He finally understood that the British did not see Indians as human enough to deserve any rights.
Churchill finally made that even more clear in 1943 when he created the Great Famine of 1943 by taking all of the grain grown in the Bengal/Calcutta region to send to be put in storage in the Balkans, just in case there was a later war against the USSR. Over 4.3 Million Indians starved to death.
My mother, then the 12 year old daughter of an Indian non-commissioned Army officer living on the other side of the country, remembers in her neighborhood all of the trees stripped bare of leaves and bark, all of the bushes and grass dug up, all of the paper and saw dust gone, because people needed food. The poorest of the poor were attempting to fill their bellies with soil trying to find some nutrients.
Ships loaded with surplus grain from Australia arrived in the Bay of Bengal ports to provide relief, but were ordered to return home without unloading. When Churchill was sent a memo apprising him of the millions starving to death, he wrote in the margins a note asking if it was so bad, why was Gandhi still alive?

The speaker is the youngest person, at 22, to have earn a PhD from Tufts University, an Indian Parliamentarian and best selling author who had previously spent decades working at the UN, until Kofi Anand defeated him for the Secretary General position. Don't worry, it is not as dry as it might seem, in fact, it is filled with humor and it will likely gain you a great many views and subscribers.

SO HERE'S AN EASTER EGG...You see that thin turban guy UDHAM talks to or reminisce about in the movie..He is BHAGAT SINGH. HE was an ideological figure for many young revolutionaries back then. UDHAM SINGH was largely inspired by him too. You'd notice in the movie. UDHAM SINGH is mostly seen grim in every scene of the movie especially in london. But you get to see a flicker of smile or an excitement on his face when his friend from IRA (THAT IRISH GIRL) mentions BHAGAT SINGHS NAME. BHAGAT SINGH and his brothers in arm died for INDIA AS WELL. THEY ARE ALL EQUALLY REVERED IN INDIA. UDHAM SINGH was someone that was like on the edge of the group and was probably inspired from everyone in that group. (THE group was HSRA - HINDUSTAN REPUBLICAN AND SOCIALIST ASSOCIATION) ...THAT GROUP IN ITSELF REPRESENT INDIA....
AND TO GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THIS GROUP. I URGE YOU TO WATCH..RANG DE BASANTI MOVIE..

You love the movie connected to India under British rule. Then you will surely love movie “Rang de Basanti”. For sure one of the best stories in any movie you will ever watch. The way they have connected modern young guys to the famous freedom fighters and the storyline runs closely with the real events that took place during 1930s and 40s. The movie has comedy , dance , best music, sadness , chilling scenes. It has everything that you will love. Bit of old movie so the cinematography wont be the best. But the emotion and storyline will be great great. Please do watch it, you wont regret.

    Indian, identify as brown race.
    2. In our Brown race, we have many skin tones, such as light brown/ dark brown/ fair / white / dark.
    3. Now, we regardless of white or black skin tone, we identify as brown race, but we use word black or white in sense of skin tone and not in sense of race,
Till now THERE IS NOTHING WRONG.
NOW, when some Foreigner asks -
    you white / black ?
So we Indians think that foreigner is talking of our skin tone and we say yes, while that foreigner was talking of our race, so since we said yes, now we gave an impression that we identify as black/white race while in reality, we don't identify as white or black race, SO WE SHOULD STOP SAYING JUST "YES I AM BLACK + YES I AM WHITE" , BUT INSTEAD - IF YOU HAVE WHITE SKIN TONE + IDENTIFY AS BROWN RACE, SO WE SHOULD START SAYING THAT YES WE ARE OF WHITE/BLACK SKIN TONE OF BROWN RACE
Now there are two elephants in the room which I will address -
    A. How can Indians who have white/black skin tone, don't identify as white/black race.
    B. And then how can Indians say they are white/black, in sense of skin tone and not in sense of race.
So before I provide the explaination of that, I will like to bring attention to that yes, Indians who have white/black skin tone so identify as brown race only and use word white/black in sense of skin tone, though I do agree that they should, make it clear that they they are using word white/black in sense of skin tone and not in sense of race.
Now after that being said, to answer how can Indians of white/black skin tone identify as white/black race.
Well - 1. In order to be part of white/black race, one needs to have white/black skin tone + white/black race ancestory.
    2. Indians do have white/black skin tone + but don't have white/black Race ancestory and hence identify as brown race.
    3. Now is it even scientifically possible that one can have white/black skin tone and not have white/black race ancestory ?
Yes, EVEN IF ONE HAS BLACK RACE ANCESTORS, still their future generations and generations, live away from the equator, then their upcoming generations will have white skin tone.
Similarly, EVEN IF ONE HAS WHITE RACE ANCESTORS, still their future generations and generations, tend to live near the equator, then their upcoming
generations will have white skin tone.
So in short If you have white/black skin tone + identify as brown race so make sure when you use word white/black, so make it very clear that you are talking
of your skin tone and not of race.
