It's my first comment from Japan, but it's very impressive to explore our country from the point of view of you guys. I think Nishinari is one of the deepest town in many ways that you can't find anywhere like this around whole of Japan. 5:33 A guy you met at street said "Kireina Hitodesune" which means like "your girlfriend is beautiful" in Japanese. 13:29 This guy said "You can ask me if you got lost on the road". Overall they look friendly and kind to strangers maybe, I don't know since I've never been to here😂I wish I could be an interpreter for you.
pachinko parlors (those gaming places) used to be run by the yakuza maybe thats why that area was considered dangerous.. though its never dangerous in japan for tourists unless you cause trouble yourself
It's much deeper than that. Something that cannot be written on RUclips. Kansai people will know why certain ethnic groups and social become Yakuza in the first place.
wow....I'm from Tokyo, but I know Nishinari as the town of the people living on benefits. Osaka people are hilarious with their specific accents and dialect, so I guess it allows Nishinari to be like that.
You must be new to Japan. Nishinari-ward as a whole was never the problem. There are relatively nice areas in the ward. Only certain districts/blocks within Nishinari-ward had dangerous characteristics. People in Osaka/Kansai region would know them by other names. Gambling and drugs was never the main problem. I remember it as rioting, homelessness, foreign-nationals, and day-to-day labors, albeit that was from 40-50 years ago. You can probably find cars on fire and clashes with Riot Police videos from that era on RUclips. It's almost like those French riots in immigrant communities. The root problem was deeply ingrained socio-economic class dating back centuries, which dictated where people can live within each city. There was also inflow of certain migrant ethnic groups into impoverished areas, especially since the annexation of Korean peninsula in 1910. They were among the poorest of the poorest and no landowner from nice areas would lend to them, so they commonly ended up in the most poorest areas of Osaka. (Some of them are now "rebranded" as Korean towns. We had a very different name for those areasback then.) This areas was close to downtown but had low rent, due to high degree of foreigners and poor people, so it was also a popular destination of low-income working-class who newly arrived in Osaka from neighboring prefectures. Many of the shops, bars, and cafes used to cater to those low-income people which is why the prices are relatively inexpensive.
C'mon guys, surely you can learn a few phrases other than "Konnichiwa". It'll open up your interaction with the locals. What's that powerful hand-held computer for?
Caught the "tail end" of an ad recently, about one of these new "all singing, all dancing" next gen "Folding" phones, that cost an "arm & a leg" :) Boasts that it makes conversing in "translation" mode a lot easier ! 😅 ☀️ 🇯🇵
A great life experience and memory however the stress and hassle of navigating the whole thing means I could not possibly call it a holiday. I'll stay at The Entrace where I live anyday. Enjoy your travels.
@@MVTX @MVTX Actually you can and can't film in some areas can't in convenience stores ,department store, restaurant, public hot spring and some Temple inside check the doors and other facility there is a sign here🚫📷
@@MVTX I think you missed the point. It's for their own safety. Without doubt there are districts in Osaka you cannot film. And when they get upset police aren't the ones they'll be calling.
@@yo2trader539 oh get over yourself, strimper. let these two do whatever they want to do. Stop being so scared for them. They can film anywhere they please.
Maybe you could try photo translator apps, very useful. JR Shinkansen (high speed train) pass for limited days for foreigners, so you could also visit greater distances. Nara, Kamakura, or Nanzoin for the Great Buddhas; Odaiba or Yokohama for the Gundams. Fushimi Inari and the bamboo forest in Kyoto; Ueno Zoo and Disney Sea. Hiroshima and Nagasaki. You would need more time for Mt. Fuji or Shirakawago. Hope you can get to experience wearing kimonos. Gachapon and handkerchief for souvenirs. Tip: Sumimasen (excuse me) and Arigatou Gozaimasu (thank you so much). So very happy you're in Japan, Glen and Mado🌹
⭐️ You need to learn how to properly use chopsticks. It can be very offensive to use it wrongly. There are tons of RUclips videos to how you how- it’s very very easy. Just take the effort.
I agree. No one would want someone filming videos in their everyday living spaces or welcoming strangers wandering around. Japanese people are generally gentle and don't speak English, so they may not express it clearly, but from their perspective, such behavior can come across as a bit presumptuous. なんか見ていて、少しムカつく動画。

昔は日雇い労働者の街で治安も悪かった様ですが今は改善されてそれ程危険な街では有りません、他の場所よりは少し危険な場合も有りますが笑
Excellent clip G & M, the neon lights & slot machines would do my head in. But thoroughly enjoyed your Tea & Toast man - a perfect gentleman x

I worked at a Lawsons in Nishinari back in the 90's and it still has real characters. Rough yes but good.

Japan maybe enthralling as both of you keep mentioning, but personally I wouldn't want to be in a place where I'm made to feel unwelcome.

dangerous downtown😂😂😂
You might get in trouble going to very local places and filming without permission. Please double checks some laws
