For $400, this was an easy purchase. I've taken mine to the park, out of town, to a long lunch just sitting in some random booth eating my lunch slowly and just jamming out with my headphones
Yeah! I was disappointed to see so much talk about its limitations and nobody going in-depth. I am looking for my USB-switcher thing so I can try plugging my old keyboard into it and directly enjoying the DX sounds...but I've picked it up and used it to make a tune almost every day and the Model: Cycles just sits there looking sad. 😔
Dude, nice review. Can’t believe you used my comparison chart. Glad that it was useful. My gripe is the same, kinda cheap plastic with the casing. The Ko II in comparison just feels way better and more solid, but other than that, this is a pretty solid device.
I've seen mentioned before that it is an instrument, like a guitar. Not just a groove box. I find that to be true. It's easy to just go with the flow, play around with it and enjoy the sounds that show up. This seems extra true for me if I discard the companion app and just listen to the music instead of looking at it.
Greetings, You may have found this info out already but> If you are using the MiniLab 3 controller for the Seqtrack you can switch the keybed to desired channel on the SEQTRACK by holding shift and the corresponding key with the number channel that you are wanting to work with.
I use a Keystep with it and change channels on the keyboard, no problem. (Shift + the key to change). In fact, it works pretty well because I can set that midi channel to SYNTH 1, 2 or DX and keep the Seqtrak on which ever channel I want. Seems like more of a keyboard issue and I bet there's an equal shortcut on yours since it is also an Arturia product.
The voices are assigned to channels as I've seen so "kick" might only play on channel 1 and synth on channel 12 so you'd have to change the keys to channel 12 in your MIDI settings. That's why the keys are only playing the kick currently. I was guessing the channels I'd have to look it up in the specs.
build a preset in midi control centerif you wanna use your minilab with it. it probably doesnt like using the stock midi cc's in either daw mode or arturia mode because it probably sees those as already in use. id randomize in the control center
Can you use it as just a sequencer...Ifvyou have old school keyboards -:ie Casio cz 1000...and wanted to use that as a controller...the keys on that thing is to small....
Sweet intro then it's an awkward intro. Don't read your lines, makes your presentation stiff as cardboard. Gotta be loose flowin to join with the big leagues. Make that energy real.
What Yamaha failed to realize is computer interface users prefer DAW virtual instruments. If anyone wants a piece of ext. gear they want good realtime control and visuals - this unit has neither. Thus it's a fail right out of the gate. Will be discontinued by end of 2025, and Yamaha's prod developer will be fired.

Had the same problem with that bottom right button and returned mine. Waited a month or so and then bought another one and this one is fine.
Thanks for your solid review and usage. I am considering purchasing one. I think the lights show better on the black unit but i like the orange!

So with an external midi device would you recommend this groovebox, if lets say i was only getting one instrument this year

Definitely not trash at all. Good review as usual 👌🏽 💯💯🇨🇭🇨🇭🔥🔥

For midi, starting from kick its channel 1-11. works fine for me
I do believe you need to change the midi channel on your midi keyboard to control different tracks

AudioPilz has a great video about this piece of gear, it's so funny. Cheers man!
Bought one but it’s not really for me. It’s interesting to play with but not for much more.

I don't read scripts...
