You are very resourceful. During the Christmas season our church has a candlelight service and toss the old candles. I request them so they don't go in the landfill. I melt down the candles, use paper mâché egg cartons, melted wax, dryer lint or small pinecones for our fire starters. I like to gift them to my camper friends or those that heat with woodstoves. We will be taking them on our camping trips to the Manisee Forest and the Cabin in Newberry.
I just saw on Doug and Stacy’s channel about youtube unsubscribing people from channels and sure enough I was unsubscribed from their channel and checked yours and the same thing. I had to resubscribe and now having to check all my favorite channels. So just a heads up to everyone, double check your favorite channels to make sure you are still subscribed.
Thank you! I love the idea of asking for supplies for Christmas. :) When my garden didnt do so great one season. I picked dandelions, dried them and made "gardeners salve" a hand cream for hard working hands. 😊
I have a similar space! I just decluttered my excess containers and jars because I just don't make as much as I used to, also I don't make as much as I used to now that there's actually some great alternatives that weren't around 10 years ago.
I haven't even finished watching this yet... and I love this video. I feel like I don't see people show this stuff often but its very handy to see what you're storing so I can improve my own stores.
I’ve really enjoyed trying many of these things too. Soap, lotion bars, chapstick, bath salts etc. it is so much fun! Thank you for sharing your stash!
I live in a house built in the 1960s or could be older but the basement was dug out in maybe the 1960s I understand about the stuff coming off the walls it does this in mine my basement was dug out by shovels and wheel burrowed out by my grandfather and my grandmother and my mom and aunt after they bought the house I love stocking up on soaps and shampoos, toothpaste. toothbrushes, dish soap, lotion, and of course food when I use all the shampoo and conditioners I want to learn how to make my own I enjoy watching your videos you and your husband are awesome
Hi Rachel. Well it looks like I am the first to comment on the good things you do in life. Your such a remarkable person and you do soo much to keep all of us entertained. But I also love your organization of your supplies. I still have a hard time organizing my yarn 🧶 collection so I can crochet a new project. Thank you so much for sharing your video. Sorry for not being here. It has been now two months since my sister passed away. But I am here for you again Rachel. God Bless you and Todd. Hope to see you get the garden started again soon. Love you and take care. Happy Holidays my friend. Mari'a.🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍💖💖💖💖💖💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
Aww, I’m sorry you lost your sister and I hope you are able to have support while you go through the grieving process. I always enjoy seeing your loyal comments.
I love this video. Last year, for Christmas, I made a little baskets of homemade soaps and lip balms. Everyone loved them. You were my inspiration for that, so thank you. This year, it's all handmade tote bags and purses. I appreciate the ideas and instructions that you put out there for us.
Thanks for sharing all your goodies 😁💞. These are skills and ingredients that are probably going to be essential in the future. Appreciate the encouragement.
Thanks for sharing. You inspired me a while back and now I am learning to make my own liquid soap base and I really like it so much better than store bought. It's not dying and so very creamy.
I loved this! I thought I had watched all your videos but I need to scroll back years and watch! I would love a playlist of all the diys. What all do you use vegetable glycerin for? I wondered about tinctures for children and if that was possible. Have you ever made tinctures for your grandbabies?
I always love seeing your videos!!!! I’d love a how to not be a hoarder while homesteading video. I’m only a couple years in and i need a bigger house or a new shed 😂
Have you tried making your laundry soap liquid. I mix mine up in a 5 gallon bucket. I also dont use Felipe napa, i use Castel soap in it, too. IF I have a spot that IM struggling with, I will use a spot cleaner and soak (normally the kids Clothes.)
3:13 Rachel you can use those slinder and long dowel rods to stick into the corners of those plastic drawers that you stacked so they won't separate and fall. It stay stacked up and secure. I hope you understand what I'm trying to convey.
This was super helpful and so well organized! I remember my mom and our old neighbor and family friend, making soap in the summer time in her basement and back yard and they used lye. I remember that soap smelling so good! But as kids, we were always told to stay far away from their soap making process! I have made soap with shea butter, but I’m afraid to use lye. Maybe one day, I’ll get brave!
Love this video! I've been making my family's body butter instead of buying lotion for the last almost 2 years now. I really want to get into soap making so definitely going to be on the Christmas list.
Those carpet deodorizer sprinkle bottles also make good shakers for putting DE under a chicken's wing or on their nestboxes etc. Also parmesan cheese shakers too. Not beauty for us...but great for keeping the girls bug free! ❤😂
For your 'soap' molds, you can simply place parchment paper over the word in the mold and it would probably not imprint on the product so you can use it for lotion bars, shampoo bars, or other solid products other than soaps. Just a thought. Thank you for showing some ideas on making a dedicated space for my cosmetic ingredients and supplies!
Good morning, Rachel I love the soap making, etc And recipes. Where do your purchase things like the clay and essential oils?Do you have a preferred brand of these items.
Could you do a video on making wax wraps?? Received the two garden books this past week and will be gifting one to our granddaughter, who is a beginner gardener. They are well thought out. I love them Thank you!
I wish I had kept a book of my soap recipes. Good tip!! I put all of mine on an online app and then that app closed and I lost all of my favorite soap recipes! So bummed!!
Thank you for sharing. I've made many of these things in the past and collected some of the makings for others. But illness, physical issues, a major move, rehab, and financial set backs during the last 5 years, set back my plans. Things are so much improved now and I hope to get back to it soon. You're video has relit that interest. Our little one acre was a complete blank when we moved here and now we have several large garden beds, some trees and shrubs planted, and are getting going on native grasses and flowers. One thing I made certain of was to get a medicinal herb garden started. So much to do, but don't want to sit still in retirement. Thanks again.
Shampoo: I have been experimenting over the last ~30 years to make my own shampoo, but so far, nothing works satisfactorily enough to totally ditch my store bought brand (Acure). I have used shikakai in the past but didn't like the results. I just searched your channel name with "shampoo" and wondered if the video you posted 4 years ago is still how you do shampoo? I have long hair (almost to knees), but it's straight and the follicles are naturally fine / thin. Dry scalp: once a week I massage warm herbal oil into my scalp and a little into the rest of my hair. I let it sit for a while and then shampoo it out. I make the herbal mixture, but even just using a single oil is better than nothing. Or virgin sesame oil with a few drops of rosemary essential oil. This does wonders for your scalp!! I've been doing this specific ritual / habit for several year, and it totally eliminated my dry scalp issues. (I used to always have dandruff flakes falling onto my shirt, and my eyebrows were always flaky, too. No more.) I have an old green metal military dresser for most of my body care and home care stuff 😊. I have a few other spots where I keep things, too. I'd love to figure out a place where they can all be together, but it hasn't happened yet. My soap making things are under my bed, my herbs are in my bedroom closet, and my tinctures and essential oil copper still are in my pantry. 😂 I guess at least I know where everything is. I make all of my own body and household things except shampoo, laundry soap, and dish soap. I used to make the laundry soap ... tried it for a few years. None of us liked it, and it didn't do good on the boys' farm and work clothes ... especially once my youngest started welding. So I've just been buying a 5 gallon bucket of Azure's laundry powder and I'm very happy with that. I'm glad they started offering it. Anyway... thanks for sharing. ❤ Joanne in SW MO
Hi Rachel, absolutely love all your videos? This one was very helpful for me. I have been accumulating supplies over the years for different things I make. A couple years ago my Christmas wish list was soap making supplies which I did receive and then we had a big move, now we are settled in our new place and this winter I want to do soapmaking can you please tell me what essential oil brand you buy? Small bottles and big bottles.
I have the castille soap too and the lavender is the one that doesn’t get used. I normally use in foaming hand soap. It is an intense scent. My citrus and peppermint are our favorites. Any idea what to offset it with so I don’t let it go to waste?
Great video. I have been collecting items to make my own stuff. I have a lot of those items. This year I made a few salves from things I foraged. In the past, I have made lip balm and some soaps. I want to learn to make my own hair product. Also, lotion would be great.
Hi Rachel! I have decided to make soap this winter when everything is quieter. I have never made it before, but I know that you have many videos to help get me started. Thank you for your videos. I have pushed myself to do things I never had before. Also, I received your book "A Year in my Garden". It is going to be my best tool to use for my 2024 garden. Have a good week!
Hi Rachel- I’ve made soap and lip balm for Christmas gifts this year- and I am making a couple of your teas as well with reusable tea bags! Thanks for all you do!!
I just started to make my own herbal products. Boy, does it ever take up a lot of space! I have jars and jars of herbs and all of the oils to make things. I live in a small space, so I am trying to be creative on storage. (Nothing has come to mind yet, lol) I am not a fan of those plastic shelves and tubs. It's so annoying to pull the drawers out without knocking over the whole thing. 😬
I've never made soap or shampoo. It was interesting seeing your product inventory and what their uses. Haven't didn't any research yet, but what are the goggles for?
I have a question….does your first name have 1 or two “a”’s? Thank you for another good vid! We also use the laundry sheets. Liquid laundry detergent uses way too much plastic!
I noticed that your freezer is on blocks, is your basement damp? I have a great storage room, but it is unfinished concrete located under the garage. It gets humid/damp in there and I didn’t know if it would be a decent pantry area. Is rust on the lids an issue for you?
My house is such a point of stress for me. It is about 970 sq. ft and storage is sparce. I have made my own for years. I use Fels Naptha laundry soap bars, borax and washing soda. I cut the bars up, grate them in my food processor, then blend that up with the blade. Then I mix it with the borax and washing soda. 1 bar of Fels Naptha to 1/2-1 cup of each of the powders. It works great! I put it in the tub of the washer instead of the dispenser because it has clogged up the dispenser before if it isn’t ground up fine enough. I use about 2 Tablespoons per load. I make a lot at a time and do the food processor outside or put a towel over it because of the dust. Fels Naptha is great stuff, but it can be hard to find these days. I think they sell it on Amazon, but it might be more expensive there than in a grocery store.

The tube has been doing it for a while.
I would love to see how you make beeswax wraps. We all have a corner like this.
Me too. I have made some before but it is always nice to see other people do it too for different techniques, tips, tricks.
I would also like to see this!

I’ve really enjoyed trying many of these things too. Soap, lotion bars, chapstick, bath salts etc. it is so much fun! Thank you for sharing your stash!
You are so welcome!
Thank you. I love making things. These are all on my list of things I want to get into making.
Love, love, love this!!🤗
fun, nice to see you keep it simple and show you don't need to spend money, just use what you have.
You always inspire me, my friend, I was particularly caught by the dryer lint wow, I’m impressed. That is a great idea.

Great job Rachel!

Felted wool is great for making dryer balls too.
I didn't see any emulsifiers or preservatives so I guess it's a water-free lotion? Looking forward to that video!
I loved this video. You explain everything so well and I got some great ideas to add to what I have😊
Those carpet deodorizer sprinkle bottles also make good shakers for putting DE under a chicken's wing or on their nestboxes etc. Also parmesan cheese shakers too. Not beauty for us...but great for keeping the girls bug free! ❤😂

I would love to see videos of how you make a lot of the things you talked about in this video. My daughter in law makes me spider spray.
And where do you get your shea butter? It's not linked that i saw....
Ive bought beeswax to make the wraps really excited to start that project soon x 😊
Hope you enjoy it!
That basement looks like Spider Heaven. 🕷
A little bit, we try to keep up on it.

How do you make your Firestarter?😊
I had to stop making my own laundry detergent for the same reason. lol

I have a question….does your first name have 1 or two “a”’s? Thank you for another good vid!
We also use the laundry sheets. Liquid laundry detergent uses way too much plastic!
Only 1 A 😃
I noticed that your freezer is on blocks, is your basement damp? I have a great storage room, but it is unfinished concrete located under the garage. It gets humid/damp in there and I didn’t know if it would be a decent pantry area. Is rust on the lids an issue for you?
Wonderful ideas... how do you use the mushroom powder to wash your hair? Thank you
What will you do for your 1000th video?? You're almost there!! ❤
Lol thanks for letting us know we probably wouldn't have noticed. Is that a thing?
My house is such a point of stress for me. It is about 970 sq. ft and storage is sparce. It has a full basement that would be ideal for storage, but unfortunately, it floods on repeat from April through September. I want to start projects like this, bulk food storage, canning, etc. Honestly it feels like something I feel called to do, if that makes sense. But I don't want to dare store food or anything down there that is susceptible to mold. Which leaves me with no place to store any of it, so I don't do it. Just curious if you or anyone who reads this has to deal with flooding in the place you depend on for storage and any advice if so. Much love.

Where did you get the recipe for making your own laundry soap? I'm interested in making it. Thank you
I have made my own for years.
Thank you very much. I appreciate it😁❤️

The word you are looking for (concerning palm oil) is 'sustainable'. I'm glad you learned better and stopped using it.
Perhaps the word you were looking for with the palm oil was "sustainable"? I know that there is a concern that some sources of palm oil cause rapid deforestation. Because of a rapid increase of world wide demand by companies that use palm oil in their products, in some parts of the world they have been cutting down rainforests to grow more palm oil crops. However, in recent years many brands of Sustainable Palm Oil have come to market. Sustainable brands have Certifications by organizations promising no deforestation occurred to grow it and also no exploitation of the people who worked to grow and harvest the palm oil (fair trade practices). Just buy a certified sustainable brand and tell your viewers it is ethically/sustainably sourced. I buy sustainable organic palm shortening to use for baking instead of Crisco. It's the only thing that I have found that acts just like Crisco for things like pie crusts and greasing pans.
