- Film starts at 0:11. How much do we really know about Somali piracy? Several compelling stories from the world of piracy lend a new and unique perspective on this issue. Flimmer Film AS has managed to get on board the KNM Fritjof Nansen during the three first weeks of their six-month mission, operating as an on-board camera team.

This synopsis is written while on board, after having had three encounters with Somali pirates, and several interceptions of suspected skiffs. Compared to other military vessels in the EU and NATO forces in the Bay of Aden, the Fritjof Nansen is regularly involved with such skirmishes. We have also acquired exclusive rights to rare footage from a real-life hostage situation. The well-known pirate incident on the Russian MV Faina was filmed with a hidden mobile phone, smuggled in by one of the crew members’ underwear.
Piracy is large-scale theft, but when risk hits one of the aortas of global shipping trade, the Somalian pirates aren’t the only ones making big bucks. Huge investments and expensive cargoes are at stake. We show you how the piracy capital of the world is not necessarily Eyl in Somalia, but just as much London. Here, we find insurance companies, lawyers, specialized negotiators and professional ransom handlers. It’s all big business, and these surrounding industries are arguably even more lucrative than the Somalian pirates' activities themselves.
Shipping companies that are wary of the EU and reluctant to cash out the extra insurance premiums might make other, more controversial arrangements: security companies are now also making inlets into the industry. Here, we see footage from a secret training camp of one such company. The bill for this growing, lucrative pirate industry? The shipping companies pass the cost increases onto customers, with insurance companies following suit. Everyone else seems to win; the pirates, the navy, the lawyers, the insurance companies and maybe even the shipping companies - all but normal people and, of course, a few sailors.
We re-uploaded the film in a much better image quality here: ruclips.net/video/Pl9UNbWoTbc/видео.html
One gem of a documentary ....
As long as there's profit to be made piracy will continue. The Insurance salesman even said it would be sad if piracy ceased. How he sleeps at night is beyond me. He is a different kind of pirate.
@Rowan O'Mullane an earthquake can destroy buildings then you need builders to rebuild. Better to have no earthquake. Crime means we need cops to catch criminals. Better to have no crime. In the same way it's better to have no piracy.
@Rowan O'Mullane point taken. A cruise through the South Pacific would be my choice no pirates there. Cruise ships are hotpots for the Covid19 though. Good health to you mate.
How about the international ships stop doing profits with their sea and unload toxic gallons in their area? Imagine if corrupt companies would be finally be chsrged for damaging our envirnomnent
Corruption everywhere mate. Western countries profiting from this poor countries is beyond ridiculous.
..
"We'd be sad, obviously, as piracy has enhanced our earnings by 30-35% this year." THAT says it all right there.
What's surprising is that he has no shame while saying that on camera. At least the other representatives refused to do an interview.

Stolen resources.
The pirate leader says they might start cutting the throats of hostages like they did in the Old Times. Well, they used to hang pirates without trial in the Old Times, I wonder if he will think that is acceptable.
David Hughes ...who cares what he thinks. Wipe them off the map. Done.
400yr ago Great Britain ruled the seven seas with the mightiest navy in the world. Pirates found ANYWHERE were summarily executed by hanging or walking the plank. US Coalition Forces treat the pirates with kid gloves. I say blow their boats out of the water kill them all makem all shark bait.
@@howardfortyfive9676 Problem is there are Maritime laws the countries must adhere to. The military vessels are very limited in their actions as foreign military. The US has made agreements with the EU, Asia etc to follow the laws, and vice versa. There are complex repercussions if they don't follow them.
might as well engage the Norwegian military ships from now on, aiding and abetting.
@weejams Jesus dude smoke a blunt and chill
This whole thing could be ended in just a few weeks. Once the pirates understand that attacking ships was essentially committing suicide, the whole thing would stop.
Guess you've never watched all the videos that show it is like committing suicide. You don't seem to understand how desperate the Somali people are. They'd rather become POW's than continue to starve and die in their own country.
The words were they didn't care if they died by bullet because the reward either way quick death vs starving or a significant amount of money from nefarious means they're fishermen with no fish what they really need is another profitable industry and jobs to support thier families if fishing is too scarce

They should just give the crew members of the cargo ships some AKs would solve the problem real quick.
Those sailors would shoot themselves in the foot trying to save the only girl on there boat.
The captain of the tanker, seems like a fun guy to hangout with.
vessel carrying military equipments has no military escort... the crew have no firearms training and cant use the weapons... well done ukraine
That was my thinking lol. How many of them weapons are now in Samalys hands?
Yeah in my opinion that's very stupid. Carrying enough weapons to supply a small army and not a damn thing to protect the crew or weapons. Damn stupid cheap shipping companies
@David McConville I had seen in the past a documentary where basic the had contractors on a floating base. Then when called open to board ships and offer armed protection thru the worst areas then disembark and return to there floating base. It just blows my mind that the amounts of money these ship can be worth that armed protection isn't mandatory. Stuff can be replaced but not lives. I think you understand what I mean , take care and be safe.
Piracy could be ended in a day. Destroy pirate skiffs and motherships on sight, as well as the land bases which launch them, and adopt a strict no-negotiation policy. Piracy continues because it is profitable. Next to doing nothing, the worse thing is doing a half-assed -job.
They live on 1$ a day. I'd pick up arms too.

@@optimisticpessimist. because they can? in order to not let them rob ships? because there is no law that prevents them from doing that? or rights for the pirates in international waters? i hope my rhetorical questions help answer your rhetorical question.
Unfortunately as annoying as it is it’s not a crime to have weapons in international water and even though they are clearly pirates if there is no proof they did it we can’t do anything
The Captain of a Russian ship stated, "The pirates were given food, water, cigarettes and fuel. Sadly, they never made it back to shore". Somali pirates no longer attack Russian ships.

There are also maritime heavily armed security companies that provide onboard protection for Merchant Ships. I hear the Russian companies who employ Russian Mercenaries (ex-Spetsnaz) are extremely effective.

That's true until they just mostly pretend being ex spetsnaz or ex omolsk but most of them are able snipers and that's what counted!
wert freund - agree with you. Have met too many people to claimed to have been in some sort of special forces groups who are full of sh!t. I suppose you just put them into action and just see if they survive.....
wert freund - by the way, I unfortunately do NOT have a military background, otherwise I would be out there making some serious money as a contractor.
Reading this in 2023, after a year of war in Ukraine, I find it hard to believe that any ex- military or mercenary from Russia could be effective !
Although I guess not worrying about collateral deaths, that might be an advantage in this situation...
Catch them, take their weapons and feed them, then release them, I really don’t think that’s going to deter them, I say catch them, sink the skiffs and throw them overboard, that way they can’t say we killed them, they just weren’t strong swimmers
They also get paid by NATO cash. There is alot you dont know about your army.
Robert Esposito it is all about illegal fighting in Somali water that’s all ! So we catch them and we feed them and they have to pay for illegally fishing in our sea we don’t kill people there company’s has to stop illegal fishing
absolutly right! It seems to me the pirates are more important than the possible victims in this case! The crew of the patrol boat are crazy in the same way as we Germans are feeding the whole world!
Robert Esposito burn all their boats and just blast them out of the water it’s the only way they will take it serious!

There is a simple solution to this problem. In World Wars 1 and 2, the Navy would escort ships to protect them from submarines. The system was called a convoy. Merchant ships would travel together as a convoy and would be flanked by warships. With today's technology, it would not be difficult to organize the current Merchant Navies with a flanking military craft capable of high speed rescue of any ship it is escorting. A single military craft could easily escort 20-30 (perhaps more) boats and provide lethal high speed protection when necessary. When compared with the ransom paid for a ships release, it would also be cost effective. They would mainly be used in areas identified as high risk.
johnwilsonqld There are so many extremely easy and cost-effective solutions that it's mind boggling how so many ships get captured by pirates to the point where the damm navy has to defend against a couple of dudes with AK's
Steve Samuel - I think the problem is political correctness. I have no issue with emptying 4-5 AK47 magazines at point blank over the side of a tanker. This would eliminate both the pirates and their boat.
There is a video floating about of a mercenary actually doing this and the tanker then rammed the boat and shredded the pirate boat with its propeller and do-gooders screamed wrong, illegal, unfair, murder etc as the mercenaries gave them no chance of surrender (as if.....).
There is such a high volume of merchant shipping these days. I think the most effective way of dealing with piracy is to allow high value ships to have an armory with at least semi-automatic rifles, shotguns and pistols. Only the captain would be able to unlock and authorize use of these self defense weapons. Body armor is a waste of money if you cannot defend yourself. What shall we do?....they seem to think that a high pressure water hose is a good enough defense against men with automatic weapons.
Jesse Silver - there is an excellent business model here for a group like Blackwater that employs ex-SAS, ex-Navy Seals and ex-Special Forces calibre of ex-military personnel. They also need to be given indemnity from prosecution like they were in Iraq after the war (see no evil, speak no evil). They would form a small task force on each vessel to protect it. The task force would be responsible for their own armory of semi and fully automatic weapons, including heavy machine guns, sniper rifles, grenade launchers, pistols, and body Armour. This is the solution to the piracy problem.
johnwilsonqld that sounds quite expensive. I have a better solution. Allow the crews to be armed.
Awwww! So nice to the Pirates, sandwiches and water. I hope they gave them their AKS and RPGs back too. Maybe you can make some plaques for them with the inscription "Nice try, maybe next time, never give up". Pirate hunters..maybe Pirate pamperers.
I love how the captain was wearing all the safety gear on the people on the DECK were just wearing their normally clothes
He is the #1 target so I would probably take that level of precaution. Pirates that manage to get on board wouldn't care too much for crewmen running away but they need the Captain to help them manage the ships systems
Another solution is to put a bounty on the pirates. Then allow private companies like Blackwater to hunt the pirates. Private companies can be more flexible in their methods of trapping and arresting the pirates. The companies must also be given indemnity against prosecution as they were in Iraq.
Gladius pax - I am surprised that the Somali Nation does not have a Coast Guard. They are certainly entitled to enforce their borders including their Territorial waters as per every other sovereign Nation.
Territorial Waters as defined by the 2013 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, is a belt of coastal waters extending at most 12 nautical miles (22.2 km; 13.8 mi) from the baseline (usually the mean low-water mark) of a coastal state.
Waters outside the 12 Nautical Mile limit are International waters. No country can claim sovereignty over International Waters, according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), but that doesn't mean that countries can't apply their laws or jurisdiction to events or people out there. Can get messy legally.
Gladius Pax - You could consider how much money is involved in piracy. Think about the additional insurance policies offered by various companies. Think about the additional security cost when cargo ships employ armed security contracting companies. It is in their interest that the piracy continues. Could it be possible that these groups with a financial stake in continued piracy may be encouraging or funding these same pirates?
This is something to think about........
Gladius pax - good to hear about the international efforts to rebuild their nation. Was not aware of the Exclusive Economic Zones outside of Territorial Waters. Does this include fishing rights?
Gladius Paz - hopefully when they rebuild their country and infrastructure, they can pursue their EEZ rights through both the International Court system and their Coast Guard / Navy.
For those following this discussion who are also unaware of EEZ rights (as I sadly was):
"Definition:
An Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is a concept adopted at the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (1982), whereby a coastal State assumes jurisdiction over the exploration and exploitation of marine resources in its adjacent section of the continental shelf, taken to be a band extending 200 miles from the shore.
Context:
The Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) comprises an area which extends either from the coast, or in federal systems from the seaward boundaries of the constituent states (3 to 12 nautical miles, in most cases) to 200 nautical miles (370 kilometres) off the coast. Within this area, nations claim and exercise sovereign rights and exclusive fishery management authority over all fish and all Continental Shelf fishery resources. (Review of Fisheries in OECD Countries: Glossary, February 1998). "

"There is no law prohibiting carrying firearms in international waters"....... then why are not these ships carrying small groups of private security? those ukrainian boys spent 4 months hostage on a boat loaded with military weapons, didnt any one have the motivation to arm themselves and defend their crew and vessel? Spineless......
Because legally the commercial ships are under the legal banner of the country of origin, as well as Holden to the regulations of the parent company. Maritime law is weird, and superseded by a ships country of origin.
If you had a boat flying say, a Swedish flag, and you went out into international waters, and threw someone overboard, the Swedish government is still within their right to charge you with a crime, even though there are technically no laws in international waters.
All it really means is that no countries are allowed to claim waters more than I think it's 15 miles off the coast (one of the reasons China is building artificial islands about 30 miles apart off the coast of the Phillipnes and China) and that it probably won't benefit you much unless you are well connected and wealthy lol
Most countries will not let you dock with certain military weapons on board, A sailor can't just walk on or off a ship with a AK on his shoulder. Current mercenary group actually have floating armories to store arms for their guards.
International waters has no set laws, however you're bound by the laws of the country of your origin which means the EU ships have the right to confiscate the weapons and the Somali ships have the right to carry weapons, that's how maritime law works. However if the pirates opened fire then the EU ships can fire back according to EU law.
It seems like an easy solution: form convoys of merchant ships. On warship could protect 20 tankers easily.
Lol you are very dumb
Do you think that it is profitable to hold ships at bay for long periods of time ?absolutely not ,time is money for the sea transporting industry
all you really need is like 3 guys on deck with rifles and these shitty pirates don't stand a chance. make sure they are all dead so they can't go and attack someone else's boat.
Ever wondered why they never thought of hiring staff who knows how to shoot on this expensive vessel....
Your point is so clear !! in ice hockey teams (sport) you have one or two fighters ... in soccer also , one or two who are harder than the others ... in case.
Same is worth for ship crews !!
give them a training !!
firing back would just increase the demand for stronger weapons on the pirate ships just making the seas more dangerous its cheaper and safer for them to just wait for the company to pay the ransom
The tactics for protecting your ship are quite simple. In order to board your vessel, the pirates must first come along side with their boats. At this stage they are very vulnerable as it is now difficult to escape a counter offensive action. A professional mercenary (security) only needs to empty an AK47 point blank into the boat alongside the tanker. There is almost no opportunities for them to escape the lead coming down on them directly from above. You could either fire into the boat or the people climbing up the boat. The steel in the tanker would be strong enough to deflect any accidental damage. You could also use a 50cal sniper rifle but it is difficult to get a clear shot from a moving vessel and hit someone in a smaller fast moving vessel. The point blank solution is extremely effective. Just wait until they come alongside and empty several magazines at point blank range.
Alongside drop a few hand grenades in the boats. And a few poisonous snakes?
Pirates operate with two or three fast boats, only one boat approaches the Ship, the other keeps moving fast and at a distance loaded with 3 to 5 missiles capable of damaging the ship. To be really protected, the cargo ships need drones, and their own fast boats, besides having a mercenary battalion on board.
OR JUST NUKE AFRICA
You people are retardedly ignorant. No way the common sense emptying of bullet chambers is going to happen. We first understand "their lived experiences" and then immediately open negotiations with these pirate scum. I'm 4 minutes into this "hunting pirates" video, and I'll be amazed if any pirates die. I mean, that's what "hunting" means, doesn't it? I suspect this is all clickbait for viewers who are hoping to see pirate guts and pirate brains sprayed up and down the boarding ladders of these ships I suspect I'll be sorely disappointed at the end of the video, and if not, I'll take back my words with a followup post.
I actually felt a little compassion for the pirates until the guy at the end said they might start killing the hostages. That absolutely ruins everything he talked about if he's gonna start killing innocent people. And of course the stupid EU not only let the pirates go, but gave them food, water, and directions. You've gotta be kidding me.
But then they ask taxpayers that they need more money for their stupid bad organized system
I agree with you, also, theres something very corrupt going on here - insurance parasites are profiting, this problem of piracy could be annihilated very quickly with the correct enforcement. I do feel a degree of sympathy for the pirates too - it is a desperate response... regardless, two wrongs dont make a right & if that pirate thinks they may start cutting peoples throats like the days of old - then the 'days of old' punishment for pirates should apply too - hanging without trial. Goes both ways
@@inatorquoisemood93 However, rather than an escalation of violence it would be nice to see an international effort to restore what the fishermen of Somalia lost. I'm not saying piracy is right but desperate people take desperate measures.
Ha, yeah and when they accidentally throw grappling hooks on to a naval warship they should let them up and throw all of them in the brig
Never feel sorry for them. They could solve their problems by not producing kids they can't feed.
Also that Bow Cecil could have flat plates added on the tops of the sides to prevent ladders from being able to be anchored there. Like the ropes though. And yes they resort to violence to survive but one's mind swings over after looking down a barrel or facing a grenade launcher.
Why didnt any army went after the pirates after they received payments? How did the pirates managed to leave? An indonesian ship was held by pirates in the same waters, and after the pirates left with the money, our soldier chased them down and literally killed them all. Taking back whatever money they could recover
Arvid Gunardi - nice work. Indonesians do not worry about political correctness. Soldiers go in, completely destroy the village, dispose of the bodies, recover the money and answer no questions. This is how you deliver a message.....
johnwilsonqld come on man, if you wanna talk about incorrectness, there are tons of other countries that fit into this cancerous category. Starbucks has been profiting from our poor coffee farmers, and whos helping? Dont go there. We're discussing about pirates.
When Brittan was great, it would simply execute all pirates it came across. The world respected the British Navy and knew not to mess with them. I once worked with a guy who had an old family photo (very late 1800s) of British Sailors on a beach with a small forest of heads on spikes of pirates that they caught (hanged till dead, then beheaded). Their heads were left on spikes on the beach as a warning to other pirates. This was when Brittan was great, not the cucks they are now.......
Arvid Gunardi - Totally agree with you. Think of the hypocritical stance taken by Starbucks. I know it screws the poor coffee farmers who then have to pay slave wages to the locals. This same organization then gives its workers lessons in political correctness after two black people were asked to leave because they did not want to purchase anything. The decision to ask them to leave is ok as the tables are for CUSTOMERS. There have been times at other cafes or petrol stations where I have purchased a drink or petrol just so I could justify using their facilities. But to screw the farmers and their workers and then make their workers take classes in cultural awareness is ridiculous. By the way, I have never frequented Starbucks.
Arvid Gunardi - I am assuming that you are Indonesian who lives in Indonesia in my reply. I have lived all my life in Australia but I have traveled to Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia and appreciate how hard it is to live many countries. However most Australians I know just survive on a day to day basis as well and are not wealthy. We do have some wealthy Australians but most of us simply live from week to week relying on our wages and have no desire to exploit other people or see them exploited.

Not the Indians. My first day in the 5th Fleet AOR in 2011, in the Indian Ocean, we spotted a pirate mothership towing two skiffs. My ship and two others stood back and shadowed from about 5 miles out. First, a Bear bomber marpat showed up and began circling. Then an Indian frigate arrived. The mothership refused to cut engines, so the frigate fired into the engine room, attempting to disable it. But it caught fire. The Indians rounded up the survivors, put em in on of those big 50 man survival rafts, and towed them off to the north toward Indian justice.
So instead of maybe using the weapons they have to organize to stop the Warlords, or attacking the Fishing Boats themselves. They decide to attack cargo ships for the money? Not food, money from the cargo and hostages. I’m not buying the ‘victim of illegal fishing’ story.
agreed... even the Somila guy in the suit (human rights guy?) is threatening violence. they're all garbage. and they just used this to threaten to blow up ships.
But I agree that the insurance guys will become so wealthy they will be able to "lobby" their governments into not doing anything...looks like they already are.
The fish are long gone as with the trawlers
It's actually a well known fact that piracy around the horn of Africa was born out of povert and hunger caused by foreign fishing trawlers depleting the fishing stocks in that region. As much as 300 million Euro worth of fish was stolen out of Somalia's territorial waters, and if that wasn't enough the Italian mob also dumped massive amount of highly toxic industrial and even radioactive waste along Somalia's shoreline. So to compensate for no longer being able to live off of fishing due to foreign trawlers overfishing in their coastal waters, they started entering foreign fishing trawlers and demand them to pay a toll fee. That gradually progressed into the piracy that we now know. There are a couple countries who'se fishing fleet are infamous for illegally pillaging territorial waters of dozens of other countries all across the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Taiwan, China, and Italy are some of the worst offenders.
Feed them lunch and wave "see you next time"! Has the world gone mad?
Its called humanity bruh
Once a pirate is captured, they should remove one leg, give him a peg leg in replacement, one hand, install a nice hook, add the proper clothing, add a parrot, and return him to his country, free to live his life as a real pirate! YARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

pirates screaming from 2 nautical miles: "We'd like to inform of you, you've been pre-approved for many equity......"
Ship Crew: Help helpppp ... We are under attack.
EU ship: Sorry man we are busy serving sandwiches to pirates. One of them even agreed to marry my sis.
Giving the pirates sandwiches and waters is conditioning them to attack more ships, for meals. WTF?
Paul T - depends on what you lace the sandwiches and water with ELOL
then you should stop taking the fish of their seas?
スパルタン - I agree with you that the Government SHOULD be enforcing fishing rights inside its Territorial Waters and enforce all other rights of the Exclusive Economic Zones that it has internationally recognized legal rights to (very complex area of law). I fully support any Nation's efforts in enforcing their sovereign rights.
However, the pirates are not attacking fishing boats but innocent freight vessels so this argument does not apply.
These pirates are also being organized and run by warlords who are making millions out of this scam and not by poor fishermen, so again this argument does not apply. The fishermen are poorly paid foot-soldiers of these criminals.'
I guess you haven't seeing the intere vid, you should before take a conclusion. 32:49 - 56:55. There you go.
スパルタン - I did watch the video before commenting.
I certainly do not support the actions of the foreign fishing vessels that have damaged their marine reserves and have already commented that Somolia's Territorial Waters and EEZ rights need to be protected and enforced. I would like to see these traditional fisherman return to the noble and honest trade of fishing as their forefathers have probably done for generations.
I also agree that a number of people are making a lot of money out of the piracy including the warlords, the pirates working for the warlords, the insurance companies, the security companies, the companies offering security products, the various World Navies (Admirals justifying their existence), and the many industries building and supporting these Navies (the industrial military complex).
It should also be noted that private mercenaries (armed security) on these boats in international waters will not have the ethics, discipline, or professionalism of a professional Navy as they are just professional paid killers. They simply work for the highest bidder and have allegiance only to the dollar.
There is also a BIG difference between working as an honest and noble fisherman earning a humble living from the sea (as they have probably done for generations) and attacking innocent freight carriers and demanding twenty five million dollars ransom for release of the boat and crew. No comparison. A bit like saying I can not find a well paying job so I will break into your home and steal what I like or kidnap your family and hold them hostage for money. It is a criminal act that needs to be stopped and punished.
I am also disgusted at that human rights spokesman. What about the human rights of the crews working on these freight vessels who have no connection with the international fishing vessels that have damaged their marine reserves. These freight vessels have no impact on the fishery reserves. A bit like stealing my car because someone stole your car. No justification.
I bet this insurance company get a cut from hostage takers.
These are sharks dealing with sharks.
It's funny they sent a Viking ship to stop piracy....lol
More like a picnic ship
Vikings? What film were you watching? EU weaklings who helped the criminals, pathetic.
This has to be a joke, 7 somali men on a tiny boat with the exact equipment needed for a heist. Their reason not killing them were because we dont have enough evidence that they were pirates or that they commited a pirate act. They have been doing that if they have Rpgs ffs. Why not feed them some food as well
What you never heard of using RPG for catching tuna_?
Archangel77 just because they have thrown the weapons overboard is no excuse for slapping their wrists and saying don’t do it again. No sing of fishing equipment the put the pirates in their skiff and sink them six pirates less to deal with!!
Archangel77 They have video of them throwing the weapons overboard, just blast them out of the water and let them join the weapons they have just dropped overboard!! The navy has the proof they had weapons. End of. Onto the next bunch of crooks!!
$200,000. Is a bargain considering the savings in insurance and the almost guarantee that you will not be pirated. That should be a no brainer.
The navy captain who said it's not for him to say what should be done. He's just being politically correct.
Bang bang bang. Navy warship to Bow Cecil, the suspect vessel is no longer suspect... or a vessel.
nice captain uniform ,the captain is wearing at the briefing in the start
So the EU's idea to combat pirates is to what? drive up and take their AK's and RPG's and just hand them some food and water in exchange?
Here's the reason people think you're useless, you do things like that.
No one goes boating for the hell of it with that kind of hardware.
T J yeah but in open waters they cant do shit. the only thing that would work if we put up a line of ships inside the somali waters and have tgem prosecuted on their laws. but its a lawless state so we cant even do that.
Here's some ideas from my relatively infertile mind - pour caustic soda on them, pour harsh acid on them, grease the decks, put glue on the decks (the kind that tears the soles of their feet off), electrify the railing or decks, pump high pressure sea water down on them when they get next to the ship (with robotic remote controlled water hoses), when they get along side the ship, drop a few gallons of gasoline on them (in something like flimsy plastic bags) and then drop some lit flares (even if it only ends up being a threat to do so), Drop fragile bags of flesh ripping glue on them when they get to the side of the ship, Or tear gas. I mean really, if they can't come up with non armed ways to defend themselves and discourage these pirates, then they aren't trying very hard.
The US allocated $4 Million per year for Kenya to house the pirates captured by the US to hold 100 pirates. Is anyone doing the math? That's $40,000 per pirate. Sounds to me like Kenya has discovered a new national resource
Shit, im more than happy to secure 2 or 3 pirates in my house for that amount of money. I ll make sure they eat healthy.
As a leader of an African country, you would voluntary hold pirates captured by rich foreign country outside your country for cost only? You wouldn´t make a great diplomat if that is the case. The US can keep pirates locked in US if they wish to do so, but I guess there is a reason they don´t.
"You can't start a war before eight in the morning, because nobody's at work yet." 👏👏
Yep, that is the problem their fish preserves are gone. No! After being paid millions in ransoms they would never go back to fishing or to factory jobs. They act as terrorist treat them as such.
After being paid millions their fish reserves are still decimated. To bad money doesn't grow on trees.

I like how they're trying to makes us feel sorry for the somali pirates by saying the forigners took all of their fish. That's BS. Lots of people in America have lost jobs to technology. We don't rob banks to make up for the lost income. We learn new skills and do something else. They can too.
Not quite... Again these are countries without the economic infrastructures that we have. It's hard to find jobs that don't exist.

No, Americans just turn to drugs and alcohol in response to losing a job, or any problem for that matter. Each country has its problems don't be so quick to jump on your pedestal.
How did we become so developed?
David PR Due to some remarkable people. Remarkable people who have not been faced with poverty and starvation. You think Somalia doesn't have its own ingenious people? They do, they have just not been able to realise this potential, it's hard to concentrate on anything when you are starving.
The skipper of the destroyer from the EU says he's surprised at the civilian hardliners and that what they propose is far beyond what the military will accept. Well, gee, skipper, you keep on feeding the pirates and pointing them toward home, you're not doing anything to deter them. The skipper of the tanker says he's lost confidence in the military. HE should be running the fight out there and HE would put a stop to it. The navies of several countries wouldn't be needed if the merchant ships were armed with .50 caliber machine guns on each bridge wing. Let the people at risk of being held hostage solve the problem. The insurance companies would probably agree.
I believe Cargo ships have the right to be armed and have the right to fire upon the pirates! If the have thier humane rights to try to attack /rob/ransom that is act of threat/terrorism and cargo ships then have the right to fire upon them as well!!! Self Defense!!
They used to be armed, as I know personally - see my post.
I agree, there should be international law that allows sailors on freighters to have training with small arms and a licence to kill/disable any pirates that threaten their ship.
@@MrCareer707 There doesn´t need to be an international law for something which is not prohibited. What is not prohibited is obviously allowed. The sailors behave according to laws of the country under which flag they sail.
Well if I was in that Ukrainian ship I would have broke open a few of the “cargo” boxes on board. I’m a little disappointed in those chaps.
Ryan Vargas
Yup! How in the fuck do you have a literal boat load of the tools of war and get captured without firing a single round? Bitches...
I can't believe a ship with that cargo had no protection.
I'm thinking about the same thing Ryan. If I was there, I would have utilized those weapons to fight the pirates. Instead they let them get captured without a fight.
Bunch of either pussies or dumb asses, cant decide which
Ryan Vargas well it is true they screwed up
They took your fish....so why didn't you pirate the fishing trawlers
They tried but the navies protected the fishing trawlers.
@@choppacal4899 true
Because the Navies protect the trawlers.
zolbad juanrico I think it’s a little more complicated. You got to see this holistically. So the reason why pirating has increased is due to the poverty caused by too much foreign fishing in their waters, and so the people are desperate to earn money, and these cargo ships offer the best opportunity. What you seem to not understand is that now fishing is rare in these waters due to a lack of fish, so there is a problem with that logic as nice as it sounds
@@ulysseshenderson8717 I see...how silly am I...so the right thing to do is pirate the ships ..steal the cash ,,which often is many thousands of dollars...which you'd think would suffice..but on many ships they hold the crew captive at gunpoint..not very nice..then hold them for ransom for millions..hardly a fair trade off..I'd say Greed and terrorism..On some occasions, some civilians held for ransom were executed..My Logic says..if they are entering the shipping channels...then they are far enough to catch fish...But Terrorism pays better..we are both obviously correct in our minds..and we have different ways in dealing with the problem..There are also no Robin Hood stories to be told...The wealth from ransoms are not shared or invested into the civilian population that has suffered from foreign fishing vessels stealing the fish..
Okay when I read Pirate Hunting in the title I had something else in mind. But oOokay
if that cruiser is 500 miles away it is like driving an interstate to get to them to rescue ….arm the transports!!
What appealed to me in the entire situation which is a very delicate situation is the history behind why some people choose to become Pirates. The point was made clear that the resources have dwindled, but that's not to ignore the fact that a pirate can make millions of dollars if they're successful. But with all the money that companies are expending on fighting piracy why not create jobs in one of the poorest places on Earth of Somalia to turn these Pirates into workers by paying them a sum so that they have safe Passage through the waterways. In other words let them police each other and police the waterways rather than attack ships and hold ransoms as many of these Somalians are tribal based. Don't you think that the money that's being spent fighting piracy would be a lot less to pay Pirates to police their own Waters to make these vessels safe feeling as though they're making a contribution to the safety and passageway of ships carrying millions of dollars in goods and services? Rather than see them as the enemy, feed their families put them to work give them the resources back and call their Bluff.
You pay a pirate to police their own waters and they get even richer stealing from their own!
You want to pay them what essentially is extortion money since they have coerced you up until now into paying ransoms so to avoid the kidnapping we now pay them protection money? Fuckkkkk outta here with that. These pirates should have taken up their beef with the foreign fishing ships but they waited too long so now they attack uninvolved third parties. Is it ok for me to threaten to cut your moms throat if I don't get paid because some Chinese fishing boat depleted all the resources in my local area? The sob story trying to justify piracy is laughable at best. The fact that they can't form a functioning society to provide other forms of employment is their own problem.
"Kenyan court of law"? Is that the latest oxymoron?
51:10 so after the pirates had recieved the cash, why couldnt the navy just catch them as they were leaving the ship? i dont understand why they dont do this..
Exactly. Give them the cash them blow them out of the water when they leave
Not even that, as a captian of a major navy i would:
wait until the pirate have recieved the cash transaction
make sure all the pirates leave the vessel
wait until they are at least 1km away from the boat
send in a RECON force to capture the pirates and the money. simple
i cant understand how the navy can just watch the pirates leave with the money away into the sunset. its like once theyre off the ship, they cant hurt anyone.
because somewhere along the money trail someone from a government involved in the transaction is getting a cut. the proof is that the pirates aren't being blown out of the fucking water. just look into trying to get into security work on ships as an American. unless you have a background in military special operations you can pretty much forget about it. the US makes the maritime laws so ridiculously difficult its not worth applying. A friend and I looked into it a couple years ago, we both have served in the military both have over 20 years experience in LE, to include time on SWAT teams, certified firearms instructors and bunch of other shit that looks good on paper and we gave up before we got started. I think they know we American's have no fucks to give when it comes to those skinny's steal shit by force.

pd2210 I agree
It wreaks if political treason
Considering the closing statement of the pirate at the end of this video I would say anyone caught with all the evidence of pirating should be destroyed quickly and completely..(Consider the evidence the judge and jury)..That way the pirates can never approach again...Eventually we will run out of pirates and equipment.

Each ship should have a safe room with controls that overrides the main bridge and use anti boarding to the side of their ships and be allowed to arm them selves and for the ships using their waters to pay a toll to the fishermen who have had their livelihood taken away by big fishing boats and maybe give them some kind of manufacturing ability

No, it's international waters.
Their territorial waters extend out to only 12 miles. International cargo ships would not be going through Somali waters, known to be territorial waters of Somali pirates. Cargo ships go out of their way to avoid coming close to pirate infested waters, and so the pirates have to operate much further out at sea.

1 U.S. Navy carrier could cover most of the active spots with maritime patrols, and quick strike capability. Having assets in the area would also be beneficial for covering other limited engagement conflicts in that part of the world. This would also be great training and target practice, while it lasted.
I like the target practice idea. That also allows for the permanent elimination of the parasites (aka pirates) that infect the world.
An old WW2 carrier with prop Ads would do the job just fine, and could be used as a recreational resort when not in need.
Then again, why should America again have to shoulder this cost?? Just arm the ship with automatic defenses and let them defend themselves. CIWS on each corner would do nicely.

Die, with your family of starvation, refuse to become a pirate and be killed, or pirate and be killed by a European bullet. That's why pirate ships are so similar to fishing ships, because they are fishing ships. Piracy is wrong, horrific and life-threatening. There is no excuse for commiting a crime.
