Probably should've used a different example regarding Germany and cars when it comes to the US. When the average price of a Ford is $55K, it's hard to make the case that they are cheaper and better.

As a German, I didn't know exactly, although I've known all my life that American cars are very expensive here, otherwise lots of people here would be driving Mustangs. It has to be fair. If we impose 100% punitive tariffs, I demand that the USA also imposes them on our products. There is only one thing that is fair and right, free competition should regulate itself.
If they raised taxes on German engineering, I will still purchase from Germany. American vehicles are terribly made
Every country that has tariffs on US goods must have equal tariffs applied on them. The biggest offender is Canada. Why is my BMWx5 made in southcarolina but a Ford is made in Canada? Its bonkers.
Remember we buy American cars. Lots of them. If theUSA ruins our car industry that currently works in partnership with the USA. We will not buy American cars. The reason we tolerate tariffs from Japan and Germany so we can continue to keep our strategic military bases in their country. We've been an occupying force IN THEIR COUNTRY SINCE WW2. I would really love to buy a Ford Mustang as a resident of the Netherlands, but it's not just the tariffs that are the problem. American car manufacturers don't make cars tailored to the European market. Ford has been selling cars in Europe for decades, but for example, the emissions of a Mustang are so high that importing a 2017 Mustang comes with higher import costs due to the poor emissions of this particular model. Even a Ferrari 488 is cheaper to import into the Netherlands from Germany than that Mustang. As I said, as long as American car manufacturers do not adapt their offerings to the European market, there is little future potential for their car brands in Europe.

Tariffs are very complicated. There are cases where it can result in products being manufactured in the USA I stead of China, however there are cases where that is still too expensive and the company will just continue to buy from China and just pass the rising costs on to the consumers.
