      You can literally use a paint can lid, or a pie plate, or anything that has the radius you want and can be followed with a flush trim bit, or you can buy templates already made for cheap.

    Climb cutting (routing in wrong direction) that thick can lead to really nasty surprises. Ok to do it sometimes, I do myself to avoid tear out, but then I'm well aware of it. Showing on youtube without any mention about it...not ok.

    • @richtomlinson7090
      @richtomlinson7090 11 месяцев назад +1

      Certainly don't let the new guy climb cut, but we do it for corners, and difficult materials.
      it also helps with Birdseye Maple, or Curly stock.

  • @ghian696
    @ghian696 Год назад +6

    I'm just curious (not being picky guys), but given that these tools rotate clockwise - would'nt he want to be 'cutting in' from the other direction for a cleaner cut? ie: cutting-in via an anti-clockwise direction when trimming around an outside edge? vs cutting-in in a clock-wise direction when when trimming an 'inside' or enclosed edge?
    - or is that concept too academic and old fashioned given todays fast and powerful routers?

    • @richtomlinson7090
      @richtomlinson7090 11 месяцев назад +3

      Climb cutting, like this, produces a better cut, but at the risk of safety, and predictability.
      Don't let the inexperienced person climb cut.
      Splinter prone corners and Birdseye or curly materials cut better with climb cutting.

      Except if you make a juice groove with a jig in a cutting board. In this case you must do it clockwise. If you don´t, the bit will move the router away from the fence, to the inside of the board.

    • @richtomlinson7090
      @richtomlinson7090 11 месяцев назад +1

      Cutting against the rotation is standard, only because of safety, and not because of cut quality.
      If one has difficult grain patterns or tearout, you can perform climb cutting.
      This guy probably just knows how to use a router, and he can cut however he wants.
      Some people can't hold onto a router that is climb cutting, but we do it sometimes for corners to reduce tearout, or difficult types of wood or brittle solid surface materials.
