  • After hip and knee surgery to repair a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus, Chapter 5 of "BILLY" follows Big Wave World Champion Billy Kemper's intense journey through physical therapy as he endeavors to return to the sport and life he loves.
With hopes to be back in the water surfing before the end of the year, it took Billy everything he had mentally and physically to push through the pain of his injury. Soon after starting rehab with Dr. Gubernick, he got the green light to travel back to Oahu and see his wife and kids.
Though ecstatic that he gets to be home with his family, Billy also realizes the burden he puts on them and how much care he needs himself and opts to head back to California to finish the rest of his rehabilitation.
Findings parallel his career-defining 2017 season, in which he won his first Big Wave World Title, he also saw his mother valiantly battle cancer.
"Billy's really good at taking the good, the bad and the ugly and knowing how to shape it into motivation," shared Mark Healey in the episode.
Billy's Mother, Lisa Diaz, was a prominent figure in the lives of many North Shore pro surfers and was diagnosed with Stage 4 Throat Cancer in 2017. As she went through treatment, she insisted Billy continue pursuing his dreams and competing.
Finding inspiration in his mother's enduring spirit, Billy went on to take fourth at the Puerto Escondido Challenge and second at the Pe'ahi Challenge. At the Nazaré Challenge, he clinched the 2017 Big Wave World Title and brought his World Title home to celebrate with his mom shortly before her passing.
This episode includes featured guests "Dr. G" Gubernick, Tahiti Kemper, Coco Ho, Matt Meola, Albee Layer, Eddie Rothman, Kai Lenny and Mark McMorris.

I'm sorry but I don't understand the tragedy of this situation. What's so incredible in this injury that all men are crying? This happens to thousands people in the world. But few people have such conditions for rehabilitation. I had an injury also (skiing). A month in a cast and then six months of rehabilitation. But I rebuilt myself on my own, at home. I used the tools at hand, watched the exercises on RUclips. I had no money for medical rehabilitation centers. And now everything is fine, but I don't see any heroism in this.

I was in rehab for my knee every day for 5 months. The physical therapy was hard, the emotional and psychological was even harder. Other than running, I'm back to my old life with a really loud knee. I love this series...so well done! I've been crying as I watch, envious I admit of the loving family life Billy has & his support system...such a rare gift. I had to stop surfing 7.5 years ago & have missed it every day, but I also miss just being able to walk a mile & not collapse in pain & fatigue afterward. I have 3 hernias(all need surgery), an arthritic hip/torn labrum(needs surgery), torn ACL(needs surgery), & I have a debilitating disease called MECFS that keeps me mostly immobile these days...I relate to the pain Billy was experiencing & I dream of having just my hernias fixed & then maybe my knee replaced one day, but now I'm too old and too fragile from MECFS to even dream of doing the required rehab to make surgery successful. So, why post this buzzkill comment here on such a stoked video series? Well, I have only one legacy left and that is to try to prevent others from possibly suffering a similar fate...I ended up not only unable to surf, but alone and homeless as a result of simply getting sick in the USA. If anyone stumbles across this, please take precautions to avoid COVID, upwards of 15% of people(even pro athletes) are not recovering and end up with MECFS(they are calling "post-viral syndrome" or "Long hauler"), but it is the same thing. I was at the top of the world, surfing daily, in love, planning to move to the Big Island, and I simply came down with a common virus at age 30, shingles and I haven't recovered 16 years later & I'm now disabled. I lost EVERYTHING because I wasn't believed & that is why I realize how lucky Billy is to have the support system & love around him(this is the greatest healer in life). Pro surfer Tyler Wright has recently overcome this same condition and was written up by ESPN(www.espn.com/espnw/story/_/id/31010434/how-world-champion-tyler-wright-came-back-crippling-virus-change-surfing-forever)
Enjoy each "wave" and squeeze those friends & family like it is the last time...you never know when it can all change. My goal now is to simply bodysurf one more wave or feel the ocean before I die...Covid has made that less likely to happen, but I'm gonna try! 🤙🏽

Had meniscus resection, condroplasty and synovectomy on my knee. Developed complex regional pain syndrome and an unusual amount of scar tissue. Could barely walk for 3 years and couldn't even stand up on a surfboard...if I could have easily committed suicide, I would've. Still can't bend my leg all the way and extension is at about 0 deg (no neg)...but I can surf again and, in my opinion, that's as good as it gets.

However Billy if Jesus is not in any of these chapters at the end of your life your entire life will be in vain. You need the blood covering of Jesus Christ in order for all this to tie into the best cause a human can achieve; SALVATION can come to you and your family. And can only one obtain that through Jesus Christ. DO NOT BE FOOLISH.

Also survived horrendous breakages, and lost my physical ability to earn the income from a business I built over 25 years. The mental side is a slippery slope - anybody on a journey of recovery knows. I found these episodes deeply touching - thank you Billy, Koa and he team.

Your story is such an inspiration and I pray for your continued recovery, health and success. Malama pono Akua

When Lisa talked about her son, I couldn't help but cry. The love she shared with her sons, family and others spoke volumes to how Billy grew to be the amazing man he is today. She admired Billy and he admired her. She passed on that love, determination and perseverance to her son, and I have no doubt he will pass it on to his sons. So glad I stumbled across these stories of Billy Kemper's life. They are absolutely inspiring! I think MS and HS kids should watch these videos to help them acknowledge that no matter what the world throws at you, you have choices to become who you want to be to yourself and to others.

The Energy Billy has funneled from Family and friends and most Importantly our mother Ocean is hard to comprehend until you see him racing down the face of a triple deep blue diamond mountain. His story is beyond inspirational....Aloha BK
