    Regardless if an engine is working as it should the rings will spin and be happy😁😁

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 Месяц назад +2

      I was taught it's good practice to just make sure they're not lined up - but also that it really wasn't important, as the rings will twist around in their grooves as the engine runs, so they won't stay where you put them. Only 2-strokes hold their rings from rotating, so the gap doesn't wipe over a port and snap the end of the ring off - and in their case, the piston itself has a little nub in each groove that holds the ring in place.

    • @thatmand4542

      @@aussiebloke609 Yeah you're aren't wrong it kinda doesn't really matter but id rather be on the safe side !
      Also i never knew about that on the 2 strokes ! Kinda makes sense cause well.....its a 2 stroke and they don't have cams since they rely on the ports(unless its a detroit or something like that) ,Thats good to know man! The more ya know 😁😁

      @armedfarm3429 24 дня назад

      @@aussiebloke609
      Right, on a 4-stroke just put em on keep the gaps staggered. Once you start to use the engine the rings will settle into their spot in the cylinder & stop rotating.
      Once this starts they will call this spot home. If you ever rebuild a 4 stroke, use new rings or it'll smoke like a 2 stroke.

    I'm 69 years old and never knew how an engine went together (what went where and why) until now. Thanks for the "tutorial." In 1974 I had to replace the bell housing on a 1967 Dodge one ton Maxivan with a 225 slant six (single tiny carburetor). Never did it before, but after I got it together it rattled like crazy when driven. I was told by a mechanic that the pilot bearing was bad. That it would cost $350 to replace this 25 cent part. I had a friend join me and we replaced that bearing ourselves in a third of the time I did it before. Saved the $350 I didn't have (only made $221 every two weeks in the Navy back then),

    Way way back in the day, I had a paper route and a used 1962 (I think) black hard-top 3-speed stick-shift Corvair Monza Spyder. Most fun car ever. But one night it snowed pretty heavily. (Loved my gas heater.) I was delivering papers that morning; turned a corner at a hilltop intersection and the car spun round and round; finally abutting the right street curb with the right rear wheel. Stuck. When sun came up, I could see the rear wheel bent outward at top, inward at bottom ... the engine ran fine but was also slightly tilted. Car got towed to a garage and they told my parents it was totaled .. and I said "Goodbye." 50 years of sadness later, watching your videos, I now realize that car could have EASILY been fixed. Darn, what a life-changing moment that might have been, had I known anything. 🙁

I once (long ago) put one on a Mini Cooper, on the back seat, driving the back wheels, and kept the regular engine running the front wheels. They went along fine. Matt - You should have seen how a 30 year old tub of Teflon Fortified Grease looked when I opened it up. It had separated and had a layer of hard plastic like dried old paint floating on top of the oil that use to be mixed in suspension with. Old grease cartridges will do similar however you likely won't see any evidence of it until well after you've loaded them in your grease gun and they start dripping oil after you already started using them.
    Old oil does similar however the pressure additive usually sink to the bottom and can get very abrasive (Don't ask me how I know). It probably would be a good idea, if you haven't already done so, to pull any other NOS parts that might contain old oil and clean them our or replace them.
    Best!

    I was curious about what Matt said about hand position on the steering wheel, and he is right that "10 and 2" is no longer recommended (due to risk of injury in vehicles equipped with airbags), but the recommendation now is actually "9 and 3". According to the Utah Driver's Handbook, I should say. 🙂

    Dual shocks are great if valved correctly... chevy put quad shocks on the front of alot of late 80s trucks stock. When it came time to replace or upgrade them.... no one sold shocks with the correct valving. The stock shocks were valved so each shock did half the work, so together they acted like a large single able to absorb bumps longer b4 fading. Most shops would install shocks with full valving (designed to work alone) & installing 2 per side made the truck ride extreamly rough. The higher end Bilstine shocks can be rebuilt & the valved according to your weight, spring rate ect. Alot of us have custom valving done on our shocks for our Razors, bikes & snowmobiles, makes a huge difference! One of the best in the buisness is Jack Strothers in Boise ID... Carl's Cycle Sales. It's not cheap but the difference is totally Amazing when an expert who has races for years sets them up. I can rebuild & install seals ect but the magic is in all the years of racing & tuning Jack has acquired. Bar non one of the best improvements over stock is proper shock setup.

    Back in 1960-65. I was a Partner with Brown chevrolet in Troy, Kansas and the secret with the Corvair engine was to always add a then Bottle of Thick Oil Aditive to the Oil and always make sure the vvent modulator Cylinoids on the Vents were always workng for the Motor. many people burnt that engine up because of not knowing how to service them. My Oldest Brother was the head Mechanic for 20th Century Oldsmobile and he took the Bigger Van and Pickup Engine and built a tremendous what they called back then was a monolift that was like a Helecopter platform They could lift and cary Wilbur Burrial Valts on at the Cemeteries . He built three of them using V. W. Bug Engines as well as thrww small Croslet five Main berring Engines because for their size, They could hold up batter than the two Air Cooled. The Crosley Motor was the same engine they used in the Big Racing Motor Boats of the time, They would hold up better than the Johnson or the Mercury Out Board Motors.

    Always and I mean always place ring gaps in line with the piston pins. Starting at the bottom oil ring, choose either side of the rod for gap one, second or top oil ring goes 180 degrees from the first as that is the maximum amount of separation. Second compression goes on the same side as the first (bottom oil ring) then the top ring or compression ring goes opposite the scraper ring at 180 degrees out.
    We have done many studies during the race days building the Little Red Wagon, Super Wagon, US Army Hell On Wheels, Dodge 'Magnum Illusion', US Marines Wheel Standing Tank along with hundreds of asphalt cars, thousands of dirt racing engines, and many many more ready to install short and long blocks for every day vehicles to determine whether your method or the 180 garners the highest compression and longest life for our customers.
    Under boost, the 180 degree ring gap alignment can make several pounds of retention compared to 90 degree and 120 degree. To be honest, whatever you like is fine with me although your engine will be making less power in less time than you could have built in. You asked what you may be doing wrong or why you should have done something different. Either way, you do you and you'll be blissfully happy.
    Did you buy that 8L GM engine and transmission I sent you a link for? It would move the spud truck very nicely and $800 for the pair you can't go wrong.
