+Jonah Artru As long as the album cover is black. Like, you gotta be able to ask yourself, "How much more black could this album be?" And the answer needs to be.... none... none more black.
I like this album, but god damn the music is so compressed. The instrumentation sort of just meshes together.. They need someone who truly knows how to mix and master in order for this to be an 8 for me.
@Droo Bastard the production on Seasons is fucking abysmal, really sucks since thats an incredible song. As a matter of fact, most of their songs are, but god do they need to get someone who has a better idea of to do with their sound...
@@mattjones6450 Saw it live. Sounded pretty much the same. It's not "compressed", it's just more low-fi. As he notes in this review, they have a lot going on at once so it's sonically overwhelming, which is what they are going for.
@@catalyst691 Tbh it just sounds brickwalled as fuck and even if there would be clipping. But cant tell 100% if the album isn't out yet. At the very least the mixing is godawful. This has really not much to do with lo-fi, it's just shitty production/mixing.
hexspell I worry that the production will give new listeners a bad first impression because they have really good songs. The production and sound don’t need to be clean cut, but really just need to be decent.
I'm sure someone else might have pointed it out but, i think the review failed to give credit in one aspect in particular: before the yellow and green tour baroness lost half of it's members. Purple showed a step forward for the band despite all the troubles they've faced. I can't recall another band going through the same and coming out better.
+Martin Meowingtons You gotta listen to more metal dude. Just look for some, you'll find shit you like. If you dig Baroness, try out Elder. They're fairly similar.
I own this one on vinyl. Partially because it's one of my favorite albums ever, and also because I love the artwork. I keep the albums I have on vinyl displayed, so this one's always up there.
+Euan Dewar When stuff gets released either way too close to Christmas or right out of the gate in January it misses the holiday window economically. Because of this, companies put out a lot of things that they do not necessarily think are going to really succeed. It certainly doesn't mean everything put out in that time frame is garbage, but it does have that stigma attached to it, for better or worse. Hope that helps. :)
+TheNerdyResponder There are probably other things Anthony reviews and likes that are closer to hiphop than this. This is a stretch if you only usually listen to hiphop. Baby steps...
+TheNerdyResponder Anthony's metal and hardcore reviews are very hit-or-miss, and sometimes come across as uninformed, but I think he did a decent job explaining this piece. It's a great record, and definitely an awesome accessible metal album without sounding either too pretentious or too simple and forgiving of a listen. Purple is definitely the album I'd recommend to anyone looking to get into new heavy rock music, for sure.
+Human8Stain Can you tell me some great Rock - any subgenre - records of the past two years or so? I'm a heavy hip hip head but I try to listen to everything!
As soon as you mentioned that Purple might be a fusion of the Red and Blue album, I let out this odd noise from my mouth that signified happiness and utter excitement despite its grotesque sound. Chlorine and Wine is my favorite so far. Thanks for the review,Fantano!
Baroness has continued to strengthen their discography and keep it interesting with with genuinely written and performed music. I love these guys and I hope they play in Florida soon!
I actually loved the 2 tracks after Chlorine and Wine, mainly Desperation Burns which is probably the most metal track on the album. I've been a fan for a long time now and I'd say this is their best album since their first.
Great album. It continues the melodic vibe of the Yellow/Green double album while also brings back some the heaviness of their early stuff making a very satisfying mixture.
You nailed it with this review. It shows you really know what your talking about, and communicate it well. Awesome review! And I myself am loving this album. Can never get enough Baroness. Anyone who complains about melody and hooks and a bands natural progression must be as static is they come because I couldn't imagine where music would be in this day and age if no body ever grew, expanded, and progressed beyond what they thought they could achieve. From a musicians stand point, isn't the point to make people feel something? Be it far from a static, complacent comfort zone? I personally dont want to hear a band rehash the same material for decades. The era of AC/DC-esque bands is over, and I am thankful for that.
Hey Anthony, I have a recommendation for an album review. Gorod's "A Maze of Recycled Creeds" (2015) It's technichal death metal, but it will most likely surprise you with how much it differs from most bands in the genre. Honestly a very creative, amazing album. One of my favourites. You should at least give it a listen!
Paul Gillett (late reply I know), clutch are straight forward rock and roll with driving instrumentation and an occasional slow jam. Good, sometimes great (always great imo). All that needs to be said even though I think psychic warfare may be a 10
+John Disbro I like it, it takes the elements of Melophobia and what worked on the first two albums and mashes it together in my mind, albeit with a greater sense of melody than before. I don't see how it could be taken as a "step back" though.
This album is great. It reminds me of... Like clockwork by QOTSA. Maybe because of the experiences that both front men had and how they channeled it into music. Josh and John both managed to craft beautiful songs with regard to death and life that serve as what I think of as a way of healing. I agree with the 8 out of 10
I don't know if this is quite your taste but please, please, PLEASE review Cage the Elephants new album "Tell me I'm Pretty" some time soon, thanks in advance
I thought that I was the only one who heard a Hetfield influence in the vocals, especially Shock Me (the first track I had ever heard by them, got there from the Top 50 singles). I'm really liking their material, this album probably being my current favorite.
easily my most anticipated album of the year, and even though I'm mixed on the album, it definitely has stand out songs that i know i'll be listening to for as long as i've been listened to blue and red tracks.
I totally agree with a lot of the points you brought up, especially with the odd layering at times which causes you to loose track of individual pieces. I feel that they have broken through sludge metal into something completely different, still I would say that there are sludge influences but over all I would not call them a sludge metal band anymore, compared to band's like high on fire and mastodon, Baroness is a completely different breed. I remember when I first heard them, the track was Jake Leg, and I thought it was totally like a psychedelic surfer sludge metal band, I loved it instantly. they've definitely toned back a lot of aggresion, but as I've always said, A great band is versatile, it really shows balance, which is what separates the good and the great.
Has anyone heard the vinyl version, is it just as bad? There are some strong songs here, but that production really pisses me off. Maybe we'll get a Guitar Hero mix of this one too :D
I saw them love for the first time this past June and it was just fucking.. It was.. Jesus, dude. They're so amazing live. Words don't give them justice.
Try To Disappear is probably my favorite on the album. Right now, anyway....my opinion will likely change eventually. But, this, in my opinion, is a very solid album. It's in my top 5 for the year.

Try to Disappear is the album in its totality. Sums their whole moment in time up. And if it’s indicative of where they are headed, oh my goodness.
2:44 good ol' tremolo pick guitars
great review. best album however my gripe is the mixing and overbearing mastering that is too blurry sounding. many have addressed this.
Brian Skala I'm a hip hop fan and even I can tell the mix was weird
The mastering is what keeps me from listening. I just cant stand how horrible it is and it pisses me off everytime I try.

The instrumental on this album was magnificent.
Sounds more like a rock band than heavy metal to me...maybe I'm mixing up my genres but I guess it doesnt matter, they sound pretty awesome.
I'm curious as to how you came up with that king crimson comparison. I get the metalica and foo fighters with the refined hooks and the melodic harsh vocals, but i am really wracking my brain to find the KC likeness. Seems like an arbitrary comparison lol

Great review. Concise. Totally agree with your opinions, but Chlorine and Wine is the high point for me without a doubt.
