    I own 2 Pagani clomages - a rose gold Daytona on Oysterflex and a Moonwatch on sailcloth. Paid $60 for each. Since my Rolex AD can't get me a Daytona, I'm happy to own a Pagani version. I wear it and it often gets admiring compliments :) I admire the iconic status of the Moonwatch, with its historic ties to the space program, but I wouldn't wear one as I don't like the way they fit my wrist. However, having a Pagani version in my collection (for display purposes) makes me quite happy. Cheers!

      Agreed. I think that’s the exact purpose of a clomage. You can’t get your hands on the real version… But you’re also not pretending that what you own is the real version. You get all the benefits of ownership.

    • @PocketWatchTime
      @PocketWatchTime  4 месяца назад +4

      To be fair… The quality between a true luxury item and a clone is not the same. Not even close. The heft and feel of a Panerai is far more substantial than this watch. So, if you’re expecting Panerai quality… I think you’d be disappointed. But, if you’re familiar with Seiko quality… I think it’s pretty similar. Definitely great quality for the ~$100 price tag.

    I think the 400$ Swiss homage/clone of a Submariner I bought about 6 years ago is now close to (or maybe outshined by) stuff you can get for around the 100-200$ mark now from Chinese brands like Pagani.
    But now also for around 85$ (plus one time expense of 25$ for some tools) you are able to buy the parts needed from China to build watches that rival (or in some ways outshine) my 400$ homage/clone (the bracelets looks superior with polished center links, glidelock style adjustments, and better tapering for example).
    Amazing what these chinese brands are able to pull off.

    • @PocketWatchTime
      @PocketWatchTime  4 месяца назад +1

      That was my initial plan when I reached out to AliExpress. I asked them if I could choose from all their parts, cases, movements, and build my own custom watch. Initially they agreed… But it turned into a complicated endeavor. So I opted for the easier alternative… Just highlighting Pagani Design. Maybe later AliExpress will reach out to me again and I can make a custom watch with their parts.

    As a watch enthusiast who has had everything from cheaper from Timex all the way up to Omega Speedmaster. I can say for at least myself these "clomage" watches just cement that you want the original thing even more. Nothing can replace the feel of having the real thing or OG on wrist.

    • @PocketWatchTime
      @PocketWatchTime  4 месяца назад +1

      I can’t argue with that. The fit and feel… And just to be honest the namebrand recognition of a true luxury watch makes it feel luxury. Another commentor mentioned making your Ford look like a Ferrari… I guess it’s the same with a “kit car”. You know the car underneath isn’t that good… But you put a pretty exterior package on it. Do you enjoy driving it?

    • @arts.4014
      @arts.4014 4 месяца назад +1

      @@PocketWatchTime Many luxury brands use an ETA movement. You aren't buying either the original or knock-off to get the best timekeeping, that would be a quartz. So, if you are buying the style, to show off to others, get a clone/homage; if you are buying it for the heritage and the joy it gives you, get an original (even a lesser brand).
      Now I'll put a twist on your Ferrari example:
      In vintage Ferraris, the drivetrain is largely the same but the details and bodies are different. There is a cottage industry of craftspeople converting lesser Ferraris into 'better' ones. A common example is starting with a Ferrari 250GTE (a 2+2, sort of a 4 seater in the way Porsche 911s are 4 seaters) and disposing of the body and reworking the rest into a 250GTO. The first is worth 1/3 to 1/2 a million dollars, the second as a conversion is worth the same but replicates a 40 million dollar car.
      The funny thing is you took a pretty (in person - not as great in pictures) original vintage Ferrari and destroyed it's heritage to create a 'replica' - its still a Ferrari and you can will impress more people (who don't know) with the 'replica' but you'll be invited to more events with the 'lesser' original with a real history.
      From the driver's seat, you're driving a vintage Ferrari with either. Personally, the history of the original speaks to me and the road car seats are much more comfortable. Also most new cars that are 1/10th the price will out-perform the vintage Ferraris but aren't as fun...

    • @PocketWatchTime
      @PocketWatchTime  4 месяца назад +2

      Great example. I don’t know the history of Ferrari and their models… definitely an interesting concept.

    • @arts.4014
      @arts.4014 4 месяца назад +1

      @@PocketWatchTime Old stuff is fun, whatever it is. Old, hand built cars are a different but equivalent rabbit hole to watches.
      Think of each vintage Ferrari as a piece unique; they were all made to order. For perspective, they now make about twice as many Ferrari's each year than they did under the entire 20+ year duration of Enzo Ferrari's ownership. They were all made by hand back then and many of the early ones are known by their serial number (not just their model). For example they made a total of 36 Ferrari 250GTO from 1962 to 1964, each was physically slightly different when new. The same goes for each of the other vintage Ferraris.
      Think of them as Patek minute repeaters - each has a different case and slightly different sound when chiming, but all beautiful in their own way.

    I'm not sure what makes the Panerai a clone and not an homage, based on the definition you gave at the beginning. That watch is in NO way virtually the same as the original; which the other two obviously are.
    Heck, the Panerai is way more unique than the Zenith you flashed on screen at the beginning

    • @PocketWatchTime

      You’re right. I made a small comment that the Panerai was not like the rest of the watches in the video… But, the theme of the video was Pagani makes clones. The Panerai is definitely an exception to that rule. Maybe that’s why I liked the Panerai the best?

    I’m not a fan of clones although there is nothing wrong with them as long as no design patents are violated (like the Panerai crown guard which I think is still patented). But I see no reason to buy one. A watch should stand on its own design merits, whether it’s a $30 Casio or Timex on up. Buy an original design imo.

    • @PocketWatchTime
      @PocketWatchTime  4 месяца назад +3

      I agree with this too. But, I do make an exception for the super value purchase. What about the individual who wants a stylish watch in the $50-$100 watch space. There is not much out there. This is where Pagani design has some merit for me. You’re not pretending it’s original… But you’ll never own a $10,000 watch… You’ll probably never even own a $500 watch. The world economy just doesn’t allow those kind of purchases for most people.

  • @MrZanzibar123

    For me, whether clone of fake, it's a constant reminder on the wrist that it isn't the real thing. So while the price is always tempting (and I could see getting one to figure out if you want the real one), I resist buying them now, after selling the one I got (and losing a ton of money).

      That rabbit hole is dangerous… There’s a good chance some of the cases and bracelets made for these Pagani watches are the same manufacturers that actually make some of the Swiss brand bracelets, etc. A brand only has to have a very small percentage made in Switzerland to be called “Swiss Made”.

    • @Goaltimer
