- EXCLUSIVE: Loads of food meant for migrant families at a New York City shelter were thrown out. Refugees at the Row Hotel shelter described pasta covered in grease, frozen meatballs and smelly meals. They pushed back against shelter staff's claims in the New York Post that shelter residents were wasting tax dollars by refusing to eat the free meals. NBC New York’s Melissa Russo reports.

I was in the nyc shelter system for a year and half years ago, the food is good. No, it’s not gourmet, but it’s edible and usually pretty healthy. I also got Covid food at times delivered it was often very good. I’ve been following this story bc I’m from Texas and know about the border crisis. Back when the migrants first started coming, the hotel staff at the five star hotels they were living at filmed the food wasted and dumped by the migrants. Thousands and thousands of dollars of food rejected by them. It was the same food we got, and it was still good. Photo evidence that the meals were fine. The migrants were ungrateful, picky and entitled. The hotel staff were dismayed and shocked. I’m sorry, but pasta is cooked in water, and sometimes there is water when it is served or if it is frozen and reheated, also the same with frozen vegetables. I don’t believe them the food is bad, perhaps there are isolated incidents, but as a whole it’s good. If they don’t like it perhaps they should go back to where they are from and find jobs,where they can legally work. And then they can buy their own food, I’m sure there are offers to put them on planes now, if they want to go back…in the shelter when I was in it, they had funding to aid people who might have family or wanted to leave to go to another state.
I was an immigrant for 10 years in Venezuela. If anybody offered me food, it was taken as an insult if I would have refused it. I never asked for food. I worked and earned my keep. I even had to clear land with a machete for a kilo of black beans and a kilo of rice, and I was grateful to earn that food.
What a shame there are thousands of families in United States that wish they had it so easy .
And a hotel to stay... Ungrateful!

Well the other layer of this is that the paid food contractors bill for like they provided caviar when they provided 3 day old tuna. THe food contractors need auditing . DocGo medical services company got a NO BID contract which is already SUS AF...and gets paid 33 a day per migrant. Did that look like 30 dollar a day per person food quality. I can say that I agree. A cooked carrot could sit in a refrigerator for a month and still be good and I'm not sure someone would pay to cook food and then refrigerate it. Being North American, I eat every cuisine from every corner of the globe and I do find people that lived in locked up countries just don't have a palate for anything else but what they are used to.

I really doubt it and one thing I can tell you, during the pandemic me and some friends picked up food that the local government was providing for people impacted by COVID and not to be picky or anything because I know what’s to be broke but their meals are usually bland, there very poor attention to their preparation. The only reason why people in need eat it it’s because there really no other choice. You don’t believe me? No wonder why not even homeless people want to eat that food. The problem with this government kitchens is that they have careless people, people who do not give a damn of how food taste like as long as they get paid. I don’t believe Mayor Adams has ever even tasted this food not like he ever will but one thing I can say regardless of what their legal status is, is the local officials already spending all our tax money then make something worth the effort. My family and I volunteers at nonprofit organizations which deals with food and the food is good. Just heat up the food where you find a microwave and eat it. Migrants get free meal and my family and I have to wonder where we are going to get our next meal. People sacrifice to make meals and buy groceries to donate to distribute meals to migrants also individuals in the communities. They are complaining about the food being terrible and they are migrants getting free meal and housing. I am Canadian and tend to have a much simpler diet than most. I make a lot of dishes myself and use as much organic as possible. There are certain foods that have a "taste" that is highly repulsive. Also, if I eat all commercially grown processed foods then my health is affected with severe abdominal distress. These people are not used to eating North American food, most of them probably ate very poor and simple meals. What they are experiencing is viable. The unfortunate part is, it seems horrendous for them to complain under the circumstances.
I disagree with their presence here. That said, the woman at the end complaining about the low budget obviously knows nothing about cooking. Beans, lentils, or other legumes cooked with onion, carrot, celery, and a few spices is delicious, healthful, and practically free. Central Americans eat a bland and boring diet of black beans, white rice, and salad. How difficult is that? Our own population would have much better health if we did the same.
@@genxx2724 I totally agree, one of my staples is organic red lentils which I can make so many foods from soup to burgers and even flatbread, very inexpensive, versatile, quick to cook and you can add any taste or flavor you want to spice it up or even make sweet.
A lot of people don't know this but when you are hungry, simple foods taste amazing. Most people, esp in North America never get hungry because they eat when it's meal time rather than when they are actually really hungry. We require much less food than we consume and food of a much better quality than what is commercially and genetically made being sold as "food".

No one cares about them because they have chosen to be like that for generations in a country of opportunities. Plus they have easy access to some resources and help but have personal issues such as mental issues, and family culture problems that are beyond our control. They also need support and societal care. Did you ever bother to ask them how they were doing and if you could get them something? Not defending or offending anyone but needed to get that straight.
Its the same crap they feed the homeless. And my personal opinion is if the crappy food doesn't motivate somebody to at least try and make enough money to buy their own food then nothing will. I'm homeless in L.A. for 15 years now. I'm not looking for any "help" from anybody as I am very happy sleeping outside every night. And I do not stand on any lines for the garbage they feed homeless people. I have downsized my life from making 500 to a thousand a week to making 5- 600 a month recycling bottles and cans. Out of that about half goes to rental on a storage unit. And the other half is for food, coffee and laundry money. Personally I think you should all free yourselves from your pretentious overpriced lives and move out into the streets with the rest of us. When you come right down to it, nobody's life really matters so why bother to spend all your time trying to get rich ? Once you're dead you won't need any money at all anymore. And like it or not we all eventually end up dead.

The food could be prepared using just a microwave and the cost for the city would also be far lower if this option was provided.

Put a microwave and a can opener in every room. At one time, as a veteran, a US citizen and a working mom, my kids and I ate refried beans and cheese burritos to get by. Flour tortillas, a can of refried beans, salsa and cheese, popped in the microwave for a minute and there you go. Complete protein, carbs, calcium and salsa as a veggie. Our beverage choices were water, milk or juice. No soda's or alcohol in our home. Now I eat a package of lemon pepper tuna mixed with uncle Ben's instant microwave jasmine rice as my regular daily meal as a senior citizen. 17g of protein and complex carbs.

As a child, I was raised, “you eat what you get.” If I don’t like it, than I need to buy my own food. In other words, I knew I would starve. I learned to appreciate the people who made the meals and in time I would find what I like in what’s given to me. Honestly? Some cafeteria and bland mass produced meals taste good!
