Two of the greatest drummers of all time,,im 64 and om always telling these young so called hipsters that these two drummers are the best,,and when i show them this video ot shuts them right up
Hi, i'm almust in same age like u,i'm 68 and i play drums in a dansing band for manny years agoo . but i have never stop love a realy good Vibration drum solo , PC and Chester is autstanding drummer, but there is alots of yuong drummer som comming up and aut now, i looking lots of time here on Yuotube and enjoying al the yuong kids, they are so good to listen to and watshing, enjoy the time my freind here on Yuotube:)
These two guys must be best friends and it's hard to believe how in sync they are. You can see in Phil's expression that he is truly happy from the bottom of his heart to have a team player whose level and commitment to his work can be shared and TOGETHER lead to something EXTRAORDINARY...INCREDIBLE LUCK FOR YOU BOTH!!! THANK YOU A THOUSAND FOR YOUR BEING!!! And the percussion is not like the third cartwheel, but the dab on the iii...GREAT ART OF CREATION!!!
Man they were just awesome; enough the same, enough different, kits with complementary sound and a real appreciation for the space between beats, busy when necessary, paired back when needed... breath-taking
I was in awe when I saw this in Syracuse, NY. I am still in awe that I can see this drum duet, +1 from a live video. We will never see this live again due to Phil's ailments, but I get to see it taped just like back then when I saw Genesis at the Dome in Syracuse. I was lucky to see Genesis 3 times in Syracuse. Once in the small War Memorial and 2x in the Dome. My favorite band. I hope Phil can now sit back and see all he has accomplished as a member of the greatest band I've seen. IMHO.
Seriously, both are great... but thousands of other guys are great also. Rockstars like Danny Carey. Street artists like Gordo. Do you really think, you are the one who seperate the best from the rest? Hats off, then.
Holy shoot ! That was incredible !! The much, incorrectly, maligned Phil Collins. Great drummer, songwriter, all-round musician, singer and actor. Not to mention charismatic frontman of one of the greatest bands ever. Legend.
Drumming is so insanely underrated in the world of music, to understand what it takes to perform something like this is usually only appreciated by someone who plays the drums
I can't decide if Phil was always the best, or Neal Peart. I'm leaning towards Phil, because he's got the best catalogue of music. This was a fabulous video. Chester and Luis are friggin legends too.
No Phil Collins and Neil Peart are in their own leagues. Its like comparing EVH to Eric Clapton. Eric Clapton to Prince. Prince to Stevie Ray Vaughan. SRV to Jimmy Page. Neil and Phil belong to a very special tier where neither of them are better than the other. They're just a part of a class of true drumming legends.
I was fortunate to see these guys in concert. We had seats behind the stage. Which was awesome because there was no wall/drape. So we had a "front row seat" to see this dual.
I remember my dad buying a dvd with this your on it somewhat around 18 years ago. I was around 6 or 7 at the time and was from that point on crazy about Phil collins. Watched many times over with my dad to the point he got crazy. It did form a special bond we have with music and each other. To this day we listen music together and when we find some song we like we text each other and hype each other up about.
I periodically come in to listen to this.... what is so amazing about this is that three percussionists are playing together it does not sound a mess. The timing is precise. They play in unison. This is how i would imagine a single octopus playing. 2 legs 6 arms multiple brains and 3 hearts.
That has to take a lot of practice together. But Phil and Chester have been drumming together in Genesis and in Phil's solo band since 1977, and they are just always so perfectly in sync with each other, its amazing. It probably helps that Phil is lefthanded and Chester is right handed.
Phil Collins will always be the best musician in my era. This is the only person that Phi Collins trusted to play with him on his drums, i but you didn't know that, well for some of you might actually knew this.❤ Chester was actually very damn good on his drums, no wonder phi Collins let him play on!!!
Saw them open a Genesis concert at the Uptown Theatre in Chicago in 1978. I was high as a kite, but remember it being possibly the best concert I have ever been to. These guys are genius.
Right at the end, when Phil looks at the crowd....just look at his face. he loves them, and they love him, what an amazing feeling that must have been. Bravo Phil.
You know these guys are locked in when it sound this amazing with three percussionists playing at the same time. Any little mistake would cause a train wreck, and they totally nailed it.
I still find it pretty awesome that my mom worked for them when they came to chicago. She would even pick them up at the air port. And months before I was born my mom asked Phil Collins himself, after they did the sound check if they could name me after him with his permission. Idk I think its pretty awesome
This is true but the fact that chester can copy and replicate and jam as hard as phil is a testament to hin and phils musical meshing as well. They are such skilled and technically sound drummers. Pleasure to watch both of them.
Seen them live when i was 11... now 27 r.i.p dad thank you for showing me such amazing music and not letting put on what i thought was good music at 11 😂
C'est vraiment magnifique, je l'ai vécu en Belgique, il y a quelques années. C'est époustouflant, quel endurance. Le top du top un moment magique et inoubliable
An absolutely fantastic version of this fabulous intro percussion segment. As great as Phil was in his drumming prime, Chester clearly demonstrates his incredibly superior chops in this segment, to both Phil's amusement and enjoyment. Kudos to Phil for replacing himself on stage with the likes of Bill Bruford and Chester Thompson and elevating the live performance beyond the already awesome studio standards he'd set with Genesis and his solo records.
Lmao, Phil is an incredibly GREAT drummer. Phil and Chester are very similar Progressive Jazz fusion drummers who are versatile and play with a similar swing and chops. Phil not only drummed for Genesis since 1971, he drummed for the instrumental jazz fusion band Brand X during breaks with Genesis in the late 70s. They complement each other perfectly. When Phil heard Chester drumming for Zappa and Weather Report, he knew Chester would be the right guy to dual drum with and play in his style. You don't compose a scorching iconic jazz fusion track like Los Endos without having drumming talent galore. As Peter Gabriel said when they hired Phil to drum in 1971, "I could tell Phil was a great drummer just by the way he sat down at his kit."
Read many comments, and we all agree that we are seeing something special. Chester and Phil are without question awesome, but I gotta speak up for Neil. Neil is just at another level, the guy decided to completely change his drumming style and emulate Buddy Rich, just because he was bored. He kicked ass doing it too. I'm just grateful that I lived when some of the greatest drummers ever were around.
absolutely AMAZING!! I am pretty sure it was Chester that I saw in late 86 at the Garden in NYC when we saw Phil AND Genesis!!!....we were row 13 on SIDE of the stage.....we were freaked by the twin drum sets....buit 3 hours later.....we were amazed and dazzled by ALL of them!!
GREAT AND POWERFUL DRUMMERS !! when they played, you can hear what the word tribal means. Two of the finest drummers who played with taste ! Thanks Phil & Chester for showed me the way
I was just a kid but wish I could have been there pure energy! I play this all the time for my baby now that I’m a new SAHM he loves er vibes. Gonna download this so that I have it forever
Phil & Chester are my drumming dream pairing, such timing and natural drumming together, such a pity Phil cannot play anymore, seen them in concert and a joy to watch the band play, so sad he in so much pain now
Here watching after Birmingham concert. Amazing seeing Genesis back for final tour and yes so sad to see Phil in pain but he gave us his all and it’s a privilege and a memory we can have and were part of. Thank you for the concerts and memories over the years Genesis/Phil ❤️
You can really see the difference in the length of the drum sticks between Phil and Chester, it must have taken so much effort to do what Phil did with such short sticks. I saw them do this solo 7 -8 times, it was always a highlight of every show
This... or lack of this... is why I have mixed feelings about the Genesis reunion tour. I've watched the videos of Nic Collins on drums and he is fantastic! And to see Tony, Mike, Daryl, and Phil together again would be great! However I think with Phil's mobility problems and Chester not on the bill (as of right now) I might be disappointed. But since there are no US shows yet (if and when they're added the tickets will probably be too expensive), I will have solace in the many times I saw them at their peak. Thanks to whoever put this video online!
That is simply some bad assed work by you three. Fantastic, bravo, the best, I’ve watched several times, and can tell you guys get along. Chester, Phil, and ?? Missed name, you all are great!!! Can’t get enough of your togetherness.
Except that’s a lie. The reason he can’t play the drums is from a spinal cord injury and an unsuccessful surgery. Numbness in his extremities make it impossible to hold drumsticks and it’s difficult for him to walk.
Best duet drummers ever! What I find fascinating, is the different techniques used by Chester and Phil: Dominant lead hand on tom fills and snare flourishes, stick bounce, bass drum and hi-hat accents… Love it all!
I don't have the link handy, but there's a great interview of Chester online here, he's talking about joining the group and transcribing EVERYTHING Phil played up to that point. well worth the search.
Mannheim Maimarkt, I had Tickets too and I wasn`t going because it was raining, raining, raining, raining and raining and I wasn`t feeling watching an OpenAir in the mud and getting soaking wet !!!
Headphones ON. In the Cage Medley 3 sides cued up....12 minutes later i found this video....so happy I saw them live at Madison Square Garden in 1984....this is amazing stuff...
Phil Collins made a brilliant pick by selecting Chester to join the touring version of Genesis all those years ago!! Btw, remember when the drum solo was your opportunity to get a beer???
Not for me. I saw Carl Palmer, Danny Seraphine of Chicago, Phil and Chester 14 different times with Genesis and Phils band, Bill Bruford with King Crimson in a small college campus chapel, Neil Peart with Rush many times, Gavin Harrison with Porcupine Tree and King Crimson many times. I never took a break when any of THOSE drummers did a solo.
we can see that Phil was already suffering from having to play the drums, and it was even more visible during the 2007 concerts with Genesis,… I suffer to imagine what this man endures today… but I thank him for the happiness it gives me when I listen to his musical production.

They had a falling out. Who knows why.
After all these years it still leaves me breathless !!!!!!
Take a last look kids , you will never see this again, ever
EVER!!
Sadly, you are correct. Incredible.
But Nic is now AMAZING 😉
@@Lucy0809 I just hope chester wasn't to be pissef off to be left off the last ever tour.
He was amazing
Losing Phil as our touring drummer was bad but gaining Chester was a good thing.
And gaining Phil as a front man and singer was great too
Man they were just awesome; enough the same, enough different, kits with complementary sound and a real appreciation for the space between beats, busy when necessary, paired back when needed... breath-taking
Phil and Chester, two of the best drummers to ever live. I saw them live in the 80's. Genesis, best damn concert I've ever seen. Epic!!
IMHO.
Nobody has this power, energy and stage presence on a stage anymore. These guys still knew their craft.
Seriously, both are great... but thousands of other guys are great also. Rockstars like Danny Carey. Street artists like Gordo. Do you really think, you are the one who seperate the best from the rest? Hats off, then.
The skirts will get in the way now.
Holy shoot ! That was incredible !!
The much, incorrectly, maligned Phil Collins. Great drummer, songwriter, all-round musician, singer and actor. Not to mention charismatic frontman of one of the greatest bands ever. Legend.
I've watched this so many times. When the song kicks in I get so emotional. So powerful. And yes.. a once in a lifetime musician is Phil Collins
Drumming is so insanely underrated in the world of music, to understand what it takes to perform something like this is usually only appreciated by someone who plays the drums
This is a masterpiece of perfection
I can't decide if Phil was always the best, or Neal Peart. I'm leaning towards Phil, because he's got the best catalogue of music. This was a fabulous video. Chester and Luis are friggin legends too.
Phil a better drummer my friend
Check out Phil's jazz drumming with his other band "brand X. Even more technical.
IMHO Phil. He could play any style at the top table.
Erstaunlich, die Percussion ist einzigartig, alles ist so sauber gemacht. Danke Musiklegenden.
😊
I was fortunate to see these guys in concert. We had seats behind the stage. Which was awesome because there was no wall/drape. So we had a "front row seat" to see this dual.
Phil and Chester synchronise beautifully...And enjoy it😅

That’s very difficult I’m sure
These guys never got the recognition they deserve

So nice, Phil and Chester together... 💗👌☺
Proper goosebumps watching this. Was lucky to have seen this at a gig at Hampden Park in Glasgow one sunny night. Fantastic stuff, it really is.
Will never happen in today's modern music. The level and precision is unmatched.
Actually modern musicians precision, level and skill is amazing, they just lack charm.
The only video you can enjoy Phil Collin’s drumming prowess with his team members being as great as he is!!!
I can't imagine the hours of practise to get this in sync... absolutely amazing
You can see the admiration for Chester Thompson on Phil Collins face :-)
Indeed!✌they where such a good Team for many Years!
Yes we do! And yet they are two huge monsters of drums.
Apparently playing together on a chair or two at night in a hotel room, you just get a vibe from one another. "Oh man we are going somewhere."
Phil Collins will always be the best musician in my era. This is the only person that Phi Collins trusted to play with him on his drums, i but you didn't know that, well for some of you might actually knew this.❤ Chester was actually very damn good on his drums, no wonder phi Collins let him play on!!!

When 3 people become as 1. Utter class. Not 1 beat missed. Just incredible.

Awesome story
That’s a great story. How old were you when you met him?
It was about 5ish months before I was born.
I love that they both seem to be having so much fun!
Phil is one of the best drummers ever! To hear others meshing their styles with his is like a perfect harmony!
Definitely
This is true but the fact that chester can copy and replicate and jam as hard as phil is a testament to hin and phils musical meshing as well. They are such skilled and technically sound drummers. Pleasure to watch both of them.

Never had a clue!...... I'm obsessed!
Dislike
Just fantastic.
Unreal. Chester Thompson is such a bad ass.

@@margaret1321 True - as is Carl Palmer another great of the era.
Wowable! I could watch his hands doing this for ages!!! It's like watching Van Gogh paints a complex artwork
absolutely AMAZING!!

Fun for fun’s sake. Not a competition just guys loving their own talents and living the dream. ❤
UNBELIEVEBAL! Tried to play it, broke my hands! Thanks Chester 😂
Wonderful to see these two virtuoso drummers together! Thanks for sharing this gem +BothSides! Merry Christmas to you.
Saw it live-respect from two incredible drummers.
You've just gotta love this......
This absolutely wonderful
WOW! Music will never be this great again!
I love how much fun Phil has just watching Chester play for the millionth time. Mildly disappointed the Luis isn't named in the title
Everyone has fun watching Chester play. Why would Phil be any exception? Chester is amazing talent.
thanks Dad for this amazing taste of great music.... te amo jefe, donde quiera que estés!
Amazing trio,Phil Collins,Chester Thompson,Luis Conte 👍👍👍👍👍
GREAT AND POWERFUL DRUMMERS !! when they played, you can hear what the word tribal means.
Two of the finest drummers who played with taste !
Thanks Phil & Chester for showed me the way
Been years since I heard this the first time. Thanks for helping me love it once more!!!
I love how they are both enjoying each others work, and having a great time!
Music teacher: "Percussion is supportive"
Phil Collins: "Hold my microphone".
No body has or will ever top that drum explosion, ever, Phil and the boys kicked ass!!!
I was just a kid but wish I could have been there pure energy! I play this all the time for my baby now that I’m a new SAHM he loves er vibes. Gonna download this so that I have it forever

Absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
this was amazing.!..Emailed chester a few times...good guy...damn shame for Phil these days...wish you the best Buddy
It was a sad day for me when Phil said he could no longer play drums
The unfortunate downside of drinking too much alcohol. He looks and sounds awful now.
Except that’s a lie. The reason he can’t play the drums is from a spinal cord injury and an unsuccessful surgery. Numbness in his extremities make it impossible to hold drumsticks and it’s difficult for him to walk.

And Phil was a lefty and Chester a righty. Perfectly complementary.
Love the way Phil smiles at Chester's solo
Had seen this live in Mannheim/Germany about 1987 or so....still goosebumbs
Mannheim Maimarkt, I had Tickets too and I wasn`t going because it was raining, raining, raining, raining and raining and I wasn`t feeling watching an OpenAir in the mud and getting soaking wet !!!
Much respect for both.
The inspiration that this gives me to be more creative in all aspects of my life is absolutely amazing thank you all I'm coming home
Absolutely amazing! Loving it 🙌🙌
Saw them both at genesis concert years ago absolutely brilliant.😍
Have seen Phil and Chester dual drumming 14 times, 10 Genesis and 4 Phil solo band. Always the highlights of the shows.
Was für ne Reise .... ICH LIEBE ES
Phil Collins is so epic, he even does a quick beat correction at 3:14. Unreal.
Killer timbalies! Always loved their sounds!
He is the best drummer ever on the world
❤RESPECT...! BRAVO À VOUS.

WOW!!!😳😳😳 I see from the comments, that it's still alive!!!
THX G!😉🤗
Had the pleasure of seeing this live in the 80s. What beautiful thing to see and hear.
My husband loves guitar music i love drums this is amazing .so sad he can't do this any more
If your husband is into guitars, have him watch/listen to Al DiMeola, Paco DeLucia and John McLaughlin, guitar trio live)
Omg I wish Phil was well again to this 😿
I like how Chester was hired sight unseen, Phil just liked his playing on one song and hired him.
He heard him playing with Zappa's band on Live at the Roxy I believe and also on some Weather Report records.
Absolutely Amazing Drummer-thon
Amazing! Superb! Bizarre! Fantastic!!
Only 8 comments. Wtf!!! Phil and Chester still at it. Saw them do this live back in the 80's. Holy shit, so much talent.
Oh Hell Yes!! Saw Phil, Genesis & Chester at the Fabulous Forum in the late eighties It Was OMG!!! Fantastic!!
Saw Phil and Chester drum together 10 times with Genesis and 4 times with Phil's solo band. 14 drum duets baby!!
The best 2 drummers in the world .
My two favorite
Amazing!!!! ❤❤❤❤
Desde España! Phil y Chester! Tremendo ❤no words!
From Phil Collins first farewell Tour.2004/05....I Saw he Them at Mohegan Sun. Casino...CT . Awesome 😎 Concert 🎶 .
Never heard better before!
Gives me chills everytime I hear this 🤩
Just awesome 🫶 saw Genesis Wembley stadium back in the 90's, you won't ever see anything like this again!
we can see that Phil was already suffering from having to play the drums, and it was even more visible during the 2007 concerts with Genesis,… I suffer to imagine what this man endures today… but I thank him for the happiness it gives me when I listen to his musical production.
