  • Honda Jazz e:HEV 2020 is a small city car with a huge interior. Since it’s debut in 2001 the Honda Jazz (or Honda Fit, as it is known in some markets) gained almost 20 cm in length, but the fourth generation is just 16 mm longer, than the third, and is 10 mm lower. Ground clearance is up by 2 mm for the standard version, and 18 mm higher for the Crosstar model. TheHonda Jazz Crosstar is what the third gen post-facelift X-Road was, but beside plastic cladding the Crosstar at least gets higher ground clearance.
    Honda Jazz is well thought out with features, which should be standard across the industry, yet many carmakers forget about them. And I'm not talking only about the Magic Seats in the back. The new Honda Jazz also has excellent soundproofing. Under the hood is a 1.5 litre petrol engine producing 97 hp and 131 Nm of torque. However together with the electric motor the whole hybrid system generates 109 hp, and 253 Nm. Power is sent to the wheels through an e-CVT. The Jazz accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 9.5 seconds, and the top speed is 175 km/h, should you feel like going flat out on the autobahn.
    ↔ Honda Jazz e:HEV dimensions:
    ✔ length: 4044 mm
    ✔ width: 1694 mm
    ✔ height: 1526 mm
    ✔ wheelbase: 2571 mm
    ✔ boot/trunk: 304 L
    💲 Honda Jazz price: 22 000 euro
    💲 Honda Jazz price as tested: 24 650 euro

    Very realistic review. I got the Jazz a month ago and I can confirm more or less all noted comments/points. I was only sceptical about the reflections from the windshield on a sunny day (I was thinking about buying a cover for the dashborard that reduces reflections) but in real life the issue is not as intense as I was afraid so not a problem - same goes for the visibility of the driver's screen, it vener becomes a real issue. The other point of concern was the performance of the audio ('only' four speakers, no 'advanced' brand) but I can assure you it is quite adequate. The boot may be relatively reduced (it still is on upper market average for this segment) but in return the seats are thick and the 'air' for the rear passengers is increased and these are major safety and comfort points (all competitors are much inferior in that respect). 'Feeling' of materials could have been better (eg Skoda Fabia is better in some areas) but they are not bad (Japanese cars are never very good in that respect anyway... it is a 'mentality' matter I guess) and they seem durable. In my opinion the choice of Honda to use the electric motor and practically eliminate the mechanical gearbox is a most sensible one - the CVT gearbox is the main point of reliability and noise concern in other Hybrids - but on the other hand I am not sure how this may affect longevity of the battery (as battery is 'working' almost continuously). In any case the engineering in this car seems amazing and transition between engine phases is extremely smooth. This is my first Japanese car, all my other cars have always been European but it seemed that Jazz was the best choice to 'transit' from conventional fuel models to electric cars as in some years from now electric cars will probably be the only choice... Still though, I am not willing to spend even half an hour to (partially) recharge a car battery, so for me right now plug-in electric cars are a No-Go... if this probelm is somehow resolved I will be more than happy to get one because the drive quality (effortless acceleration) of an electric car is by far better - and we do get a taste of it with Jazz.... Last but not least, on the handling side, this is certainly not a Fiesta (but the Fiesta is probably the best 'driver's' car among small cars so comparison is not fair). I test drove the new Fabia and i20 also and the feeling from the steering, grip etc was not better - not to say probably worse - so Jazz is clearly not lagging competition in that respect (handling is the weakest aspect of the Jazz, comparatively speaking). The ONLY WEAK point is its price that is on the high side, but you should remember that you actually get the best safety kit in the market (10 airbags, upscale paint, full electronic aids, 'automatic', hybrid / very frugal) so this is more than compensating. Any negative comments? hmmm, yes, two, both related to the (otherwise good and responsive) infotainment: one, it seems that the system skips (can not read) some MP3 songs/files from my USB stick - but I have really not confirmed yet that there is a real problem, may be they have not been correctly copied in the USB, I still want to make some checks (for some reason, this not an uncommon problem in quite a few cars/brands...). Second, when you need to enter a destination to the Navigator , there are 3-4 upfront 'main' supported languages, but for all other languages (like mine) you have to first choose the language from a dropdown list so to change the keyboard and then enter the address - and you have to do this each and every time and this becomes annoyning if you use Navigation frequently... I have reported the issue to local Honda in my country and they told me they will ask central Honda (I was the first to make a complain), may be this is a glitch for my language (normally this should be software-fixable because the Navigator is otherwise fully compatible with local language). That is ALL bad comments though! Again, good job with the review, well done!

    • @roelandverwilt2752
      @roelandverwilt2752 2 года назад +1

      @@Shekhie I have been driving this Jazz Crosstar for 1 year and 4 months now, and have driven about 12,000 km.
      My average and real fuel consumption at the pump on those 12,000 kilometers is 4.3 litres/100 km. I do limit my speed on the motorway to 100 km/h, occasionally 110 and rarely 120.
      My real city consumption will be around 3.8 litres/100 km.
      My personal minimum consumption (at the pump) is 2.9 l/100 km for only city traffic.
      Consumption 120 km/h real 5.2 litres/100 km
      When accelerating hard, the engine does indeed roar (critical in testing) but if you accelerate normally, the engine certainly does not make more noise than any other engine during normal use.
      My only complaint so far is recent, namely the left part of the windscreen does not demist optimally, it takes a little longer. I have to get that checked.
      Other than that, I don't really have any complaints.
      The car sits and drives comfortably, has very good road holding and stability, everything works properly and the car gives me a high dose of driving pleasure every day.
      In conclusion, I can say that I am very satisfied with my 3rd Honda (2nd Jazz/Fit). It is actually a car that has a particularly low fuel consumption as a city car, but which can also handle the large roads without any problems.
      Have fun !

Is the e-cvt transmission used in this new 1.5 cc Honda Jazz exactly the same system as the e-cvt used in the 1.8 cc Toyota Corolla sedan or is it a different system? The reason why I asked this was they said that the risk of deterioration of the e-cvt system used in Corolla is less than the normal CVT. Although not based on your review alone Marek, I've just bought a new Jazz (probably the last of this model as the new one is around the corner). I am 1.88 and drive a Volvo S90, that car is too big for where I live now, a pain to park and not practical enough now that we have dogs. I had a Jazz (2007, God I'm old now) and decided to try this model today.
    I am impressed. I fit in it just as well as the old Jazz, but it's more comfortable. The performance is on par with the 1.4 petrol manual I had, but that returned around 40mpg (imperial), this car, after driving for 40 miles on a variety of roads, gave me 67 mpg for the trip. The hybrid system genuinely is clever. The S90 with stop/start is not smooth about either switching off or starting up again, so it is something you want to switch off. In the Jazz you just don't notice when it goes into electric mode or when the ICE kicks in, the regen function is really smooth and I like the one-pedal driving ability. One point of annoyance, the CVT gets seriously loud when accelerating harder than it thinks you should. But... that might actually make me accelerate less hard and so be good for economy and ecology!
    I have a 3 year finance deal on it, by which time I suspect (perhaps against better hope) that there will be a Honda EV that I actually want to own, the e Honda is gorgeous and it did cross my mind, but with a 100 mile real world capacity and a price almost twice as high as the Jazz... I'll stick with practical for now.

  • @steveunderwood3683
    @steveunderwood3683 3 года назад +2

    We have an 8 year old Jazz, and had a test drive of this new one as a replacement. Its much nicer than the old one in many ways, but they wrecked the practicality by hacking a big chunk off at the back. As an example, our car gives out big dog a comfy space to travel in the back. The new car has lopped off so much luggage area, to look sleaker on the outside, she wouldn't be very comfy at all. Strangely, they offer a dog guard in the accessory list.
    Its pretty quiet at a steady speed, and isn't super noisy when accelerating hard, but ooh that noise sounds nasty.

    Great review! Ironically, the difficulty closing the door is likely correlated to the improved noise reduction. Better seals will make the interior quieter but also more air tight and thus prone to difficulty closing the doors due to air pressure.

    • @MarekDrives

      That's what the mechanic tells you, when they can't be bothered to adjust the locks properly. Back in 2000 I got a Peugeot 306, and the tailgate wouldn't shut properly, unless you really slammed it. I went to the dealer to gave it looked at under warranty, and he gave me the same seal speech. Only he assured me the seals will rot in a couple of years, and the tailgate will shut fine. I owned the car for 12 years, and it never did. I always had to slam it or leave one of the doors open :)
      In case of the Jazz I'd also blame it on how light the doors are. There's insufficient momentum.

    • @Hamachingo
      @Hamachingo 3 года назад +1

      @@MarekDrives Cars are typically designed with the highest trim in mind, and that's also what the showrooms have so the potential customers are really impressed. The lower trims tend to have less sound deadening (since it's cheaper and not mentioned in any specs) but they probably put the same seals in.
      Adding soundproofing is easy and cheap, remove the door cars and peel back the foil, press on the sound deadening onto the sheetmetal, pad the door cards and put it nicer speakers (if the stock ones are shit) and your perceived value has gone up tremendously for like 50 EUR of soundproofing and an afternoon of work. Bonus: door will close properly and sound really really nice doing it.

      I had absolutely no issue with door closing in my Jazz... the doors are not so 'heavy' compared to BEST competition but the closing 'feeling' is very good and comparable to european standards - something that I would not say for other japanese cars like Yaris or Swift that are feeling too light and too flimsy in door c;oseing (actually, also the i20 is generally better than japanese competitors in that area...).

Motorways a breeze and traffic a dream, the economy isn't a lot better than my old skoda rapid with £30 Road tax this is 155. And boot is much too small seats up. The most annoying thing of all is the stupid steering wheel tugging , you have to reset every time you start Grrrrr. But on the plus side the seats and heating are very fast to warm up. Could do with a heated windscreen. And a journey from Kent to Wales and back I found the seats a bit hard but overall the car is OK for comfort. The roads here are a bit hillier . Would I buy the new one? The interior and look , is a lot closer to mine , than the mark 3 .Reliability, apart from brake pads , ive had to replace one shock absorber after hitting a pot hole in 95k of driving thats pretty decent .
    Having said that Honda servicing isn’t the cheapest , but the dealer I use has a monthly scheme that cover parts and labour . For me the biggest downside of this car is the price , thats a chunk of change .
    Can you get deals ? I think it’s too new . Im going to hold off until it’s been around for six/nine months and dealers are trying to hit sales targets in November ...however the Suzuki Vitara with low mileage in UK you can pick one up around 15k ( pounds) so that may well be an alternative to buying a jazz.

    I owned the previous Honda jazz hybrid. The road noise is by far the worst of all the cars I have driven, and the hybrid system is very unrefined as compared to the Toyota hybrid. @Hamachingo 3 года назад

      @@TheSynecdoche why would it have a CVT then?

    • @MarcoPon
      @MarcoPon 3 года назад +1

      @@Hamachingo Indeed, it doesn't. Honda referer to it as a eCVT probably because for most journalists/customers it's the closest thing they are familiar with. At a certain speed/load, it become more efficient to use the engine for traction, rather than passing through the double energy conversion of a serial hybrid. So a clutch is closed and the engine and the wheels are linked with single, fixed ratio that correspond more or less to an overdrive. The system also never work as a parallel hybrid.

    • @TheSynecdoche
      @TheSynecdoche 3 года назад +1

      @@Hamachingo I might add that when the battery is low and the driver wants/needs strong acceleration, the engine will become quite audible because it needs to work hard to feed the battery. Hybrid drivelines are not made for sudden bursts of speed. On the other hand, if you drive along in top gear , with the engine driving the wheels directly, and extra power is required for say overtaking, the electric motor (which is stronger than the petrol engine) will be activated to provide more push. All rather complicated, which partly explains the price.

    • @knot3d_
      @knot3d_ 3 года назад

      @@arher9598 Yes, this is not a good signal to existing Jazz customers. The City hatchback will be longer than the Jazz but it will not be more practical than the Jazz and the wheelbase is proportionally shorter to its own length than the Jazz. So this means more weight and slightly worse interior practical space. Honda is losing the plot imo. So this means I will have to hold onto my Jazz here in the Philippines for as long as I can. Sort of happened to me in Europe too; I drove Seat Leon MK2, didnt like the MK3 as much and the new MK4 really looks horrible - so every time I find a car I love the successor is worse for me.

Volkswagen has just placed the gear, or rather driving mode, selector on their ID3 electric car on the side of the instrument binnacle.
