In US news and current events today, the iconic 6th street bridge in downtown Los Angeles is being rebuilt after it was deemed an earthquake hazard in 2016. Currently, the project has the highest number of women working on it than any other commercial project in Los Angeles.
Out of the approx 170 workers and specialists on site 15 of them are women. While 15 out of 170 might not sound like a lot it’s nearly double the 6.9% female participation goal for construction projects set by the national Department of Labor.
Many of the women working on the 6th street bridge project, never necessarily planned to end up in construction. 37-year-old Rosa Garcia, a mother of four, had worked in retail her whole life until while going through a divorce she learned about the BOOTS training program run by the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters union. The program prepares women for careers as carpenters.
24-year-old Chanel Waits was training to be a paramedic when her dad, who was a union carpenter for 42 years, suggested she look in to carpentry.

As a female electrician, I gotta say this made me so happy! Solidarity forever! And Girl Power from your sister in SF!
So out of 170 odd workers 15 are women and you are telling us that the bridge is being rebuilt by women. What about the contribution of the remaining workers who are men???
Feminism doesnt really care about men. All they want you to know is that 15 women are building a bridge point blank period. The men won't get any praise for helping these 15 women build this bridge.
@@zehrdaya4696 but if something happens to that bridge and it collapses, guess who's gonna get the blame?
Your balls shrank watching this video, thats why your so mad. Lmao
@@jorgemigueltavares6041 Truth.
@@jorgemigueltavares6041 the engineers
Beautiful. Solidarity with my sisters!
"Women hold up half the sky."
Love this anything is possible if put your mind to it & dont give up what you believe in .
I work in scaffolding n have never seen even one woman in that field, I mean I get why but would be cool to see lol
Rosie the Riveter just passed, what a fitting tribute to her and what she stood for to see more women standing up and taking their equally earned place along side the men! R.I.P.
Everything is Tongue and groove
My Union Sister Cecy she's a really cool woman funny and down to Earth!! 💪🏽🇺🇲👷🏽♂️👷🏽♀️
Now the question remains, _“are they doing a good job?”_
It's one thing to praise them for being women working in a typically male-dominated work environment, but it's another to praise their hard work. If you want to do the latter, you do it by asking their male colleagues, not just the women themselves.
Im sure they have someone highly certified looking over there work making sure everything is up to code. But these women are very inspiring.
@@mr.president3633 yeah, but we won't know that for sure if their superiors aren't interviewed.
Just because there's a woman doing a job, doesn't mean she's doing it right. If you want to praise them, then praise their efforts and their results, not their gender.
You are so sexism. Why don't ask these women whether these men are doing a good job?
@@jorgemigueltavares6041 they dont need to be interviewed as long as their superiors are checking off on everything. Your just being sexist and assuming these womens work needs to be thoroughly checked more than men all because of their genitals. You come off like your threatened by women who are not the status quo, if your the kinda person tired of women demanding equality then give it to them and give them the benefit of the doubt and dont assume their work is flawed.
@@burggerbig102 because it's redundant. In a male-dominated space, naturally there's going to be lots of men committing errors and other men that will call them out for it. Also, the word you want is “sexist”, not “sexism”.
Life
I’m always surprised when I am working on a job site and I see a woman it’s just not very common

The Timesplitter sarcasm and humor are concepts lost on many frail minds.
@@conflectiz is that what that was? haHAA gotteeem….smh
conflectiz not really. We’re called Smart-mouthed for a reason, like you are called empty headed
The Timesplitter lol these bridge is being built by a men there is only 15 women the rest is all men but the media doesn’t want you to know that
That bridge is never gonna be done. Nothing to do with the women.
“Women help build the bridge” And?
My thoughts exactly. Who cares if there women
These " Female" Carpenters is what title should say yet good story.
Very few of these women are actually not doing any of the hard work and are just there as "diversity hires". Respect to the women who are actually doing hard word and not just there to fill female hiring empowerment quotas.
"The man is the head of the family but the woman is the neck that controls movement of the head"
The woman can be the head too wtf
WAAA Ive no time for Lunch WAAAA
You're dumb! Lol
