    Awesome stuff! I agree totally, the entire landscape of the video game market as we know it would be flipped on it's head of those Pac-Man games were out on Colecovision in the '80s.

      Could you imagine if a real Pac-Man ROM would have went out on a home video game console back in 1982 or 83? And seeing this system was powerful enough to run an arcade ROM makes you wonder if somehow the arcade manufacturers nixed any kind of plans to release games like this because it would have decreased their revenue in the arcades.

      A lot would have changed if game devs and publishers worried more about quality over quantity back then.
      I doesn't take much to make a nearly arcade perfect version of Pac-Man, even the homebrew version of Pac-Man for the 2600 could nearly pull it off (pointing at the 4k and 8k homebrew versions of Pac-Man on the 2600).

      @@RetrogamerGenX It was a common tactic to make games "worse" for home consoles for exactly the reason you said. I had Metal Slug on a MAME simulator. I mastered the game at home, and I went I went next door for a pizza (I literally lived across the street from one), I'd order a pizza and wait playing one game of Metal Slug. I always tipped well, but they lost money on that machine.

      Yep your right. Great game. I really had no idea this existed until about a month ago when I was looking for a Rick Dangerous disk images for my Amiga, and I stumbled across this. Yep defiantly would have been #1 on the list. It shows even though the Colecovision was a gen 2 console, it really could have competed against the NES and SMS in gen 3.

    It's really too bad that a version of PacMan, of that quality didn't come out on the ColecoVision back in the day. It very well may have helped to solidify the console as the best and may have stopped the crash. I mean it wasn't only ET that had people turn away from videogames back then... Pac Man on the 2600 was abysmal and it was the first sign of people losing confidence in the home videogame movement.

    • @RetrogamerGenX

      I agree.. There were so many bad games back then. It was a crap shoot if the game you just bought was good or not. I remember as a kid my parents buying games, and being excited to play them. Thats until I played them. Argh. Disappointed again...
      Now dont get me wrong, there were still plenty of good games I got... But that was in the early days.. By 82 or 83 there were just so many bad ones.. 1 good game too like 10 bad ones. At least on the 2600.. I didnt have a coleco back then. One could only beg their parents so much. 🤣🤣🤣

    Nice touch on the Kaboom game to play a classical symphony tune to the bomb catching. Also, did Harry die on the gator/croc despite being on the back of the head? Or maybe he hadn't quite made it. Anyway, I have to add these to my Coleco emulation folder. These homebrew authors really show how it could/should have been done (given time, better dev systems, etc). That Pac-Man collection was incredible.

No Harry fell off the back of the crocodile's head that was my fault. My coleco controllers are not the best if you could tell by my gameplay. I need to refurbish them. Thanks for watching!!!

      @@RetrogamerGenX Yeah, that's the closest version to the real thing on any home system, at least until some more recent ones were released. Pac Man Arcade on the 5200 is excellent. There is a new c64 version that is supposedly made directly from the arcade ROM and works the same in every way but one... the screen scrolls. Totally ruins the game.

    • @RetrogamerGenX
      @RetrogamerGenX  Год назад

      When I first played it and I used one of the better known patterns and it worked. Then I tried a couple different ones I knew and they work too. That's when I knew it was the actual arcade rom. Mind blown!!! 😲😲😲 The fact a second gen system could even come close to running an arcade rom is crazy. But the Colecovision is pretty damn close to what's on a pac-man board, really all those Namco boards back then being z80 based.

      @@RetrogamerGenX Check out Richard Broadhurst youtube channel. He has written a bunch of "emulators" for the British Broadcasting Corporation's micro (the beeb, I can't put the acronym because YT will delete my comment), including for Pac Man. Outstanding stuff. Even more amazing is the beeb only has 32k or RAM and runs a 6502.
      I downloaded the Pac Man Collection ROM (or they might have emailed it to me) and it is, as you say, outstanding. All the old patterns work, as you mention. I had the mastering pac man book by Ken Uston (the same Ken Uston of Colecovision blackjack and poker) when I was 12 when Pac Man was a new arcade machine. I had PK (Pattern Ken) memorized pretty good. It was awesome being 12 at the height of the arcade craze.

    • @RetrogamerGenX
      @RetrogamerGenX  Год назад +1

      If I remember right, Kaboom, Mario Bros, and Pac-man are all coded. Pacman uses the arcade rom, and I think Mario Bros does too. So I guess they'd be arcade ports. Pitfall and Track & Field are MSX ports. But I could be mistaken. Seems like if it ran on a z80, the Colecovision can run it one way or another. 🤣🤣
