  • 4/1/1998 -- Mr. Gordon speaks at The Johns Hopkins University. He served on the Cordoba and Aragon fronts during the Spanish Civil War and was wounded during the Ebro battle.
He was a noted harmonica player who once rubbed elbows with the likes of Patrick Clancy.
Mr. Gordon also participated in the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp in April 1945 as a sergeant in the Combat Engineers of the Seventh US Army.

He is an outrageously fine character. Modest, mildly aggressive, and careful, all at the right times.
The opportunity to stop fascism early was only sought by a few like him (at great personal sacrifice) and utterly missed by "our" leaders. This world doesn't have to suffer if we choose solidarity as a path and fight for our own dreams rather than fight for what we're told.

Fascinating. Thank you Johns Hopkins for uploading this special lecture. (RIP Mr. Gordon, May 2006).
PS: For a truly excellent article that corroborates much of what Mr. Gordon says about the "ABL," read Brock Brower's essay titled "The Abraham Lincoln Brigade" which appeared in March 1962 issue Esquire Magazine.

This is a fascinating insight to a time long ago, when some Americans risked life and limb, to fight for the freedom of another country, people they had never met, and whose language they barely spoke. Great stuff. The fact that he's my dad is totally irrelevant. Thanks to JohnsHopkins for posting this!

very interesting hearing about teruel from an american perspective. You see my grandmother is from teruel as a matter of fact half of my family on my mothers side including my mother are from teruel. Most live there and I have vacationed there almost anually. Hearing the stories of war from the elderly and from my grandmother is intense, a war that affected my family generationally.

They were anti fascist in the Spanish civil war & Mr Gordon refers to Loyalists of the elected government ot Spain. What a great human being & couple. They shall not pass. These lesson should be taught and learned forevermore. Parallels with Ukraine war?
