I use this song as a bio feedback listening exercise to trigger a wide cheshire like cat shit eating grin. I have listened to this one song for decades because it is long and is two songs and makes me smile from day one. and there are many versions. . PROTOCOL IS EASY.-- I listen to the whole thing straight through doing whatever it is I am doing and let my mind wander see what it brings back. ROck on.
I haven't listened to this for some time. The guitar playing is what we used to call tasty. It has more sweet licks than a lollipop. The jamming has that distinctive dead improv. It's relentless. I saw this band twice, and the music was different the second time. But it was awesome both times. It was like this.
in 1969 I followed the Dead to Porchester's Capitol Theater..i danced through the whole concert! onstage with the band!!! I'm a groupie of sorts..i followed Bob Weir to hotel and spent two nights with him and the entire entourage. this was the most awesome time of my life! they were all so young....oh wait so was I (I'm now 64 yrs old)
Billy and The Kids? I'm sure they were great! Jack, my era ('60s) would have been proud to know a kid like you. Music rules. The Grateful Dead reigns supreme!!
Yup! Bill Kreutzmann from the Dead is in the band. They played Europe 72 and called it Europe Seventy 2.0. Fun times, I plan on seeing many more shows, music is an amazing thing.
I had the pleasure of dancing on the stage too, sweet, hells angel pulled me & my best friend up to on the stage @ the swing auditorium in San Bernardino Cal. early 70's.
Im 17, and I have to say the Dead have been a huge impact on my life. One of my favorite songs (even though china/rider are two songs they really belong togther so I consider them one :D) no matter how shitty a day, I can pop in an album and they pick me up and keep me going, and wow this version just picks me up and carries me though my day. thank you!
Just caught your comment from ten years ago, from a 17 yr old already deeply in love with the dead. Just wanted to know if your love of them is as strong or stronger than ever. I would guess with almost certainty that it is. My love of the dead began at 17, and at 49 the are still the best thing that has ever happened to me. That is what makes them so perfect, they age like a fine wine.
nah man, nah, I've listened to a lot of china riders and I always come back to this one! this version represents everything good that can be achieved through music especially during the bridge jam, there are a LOT of good china riders but this is definitely top 10 material
China 🐈 Cat Sunflower & I Know You Rider definitely are meant to be played as one tune. You can feel the 💓 Heartbeat just a tugging back and forth from ChinaCat and then to I know you Rider, it reverses itself, goes part of one tune then back to the other. Just like love and that magical China 🐈 Cat Sunflower, she's always in my mind, she never could be replaced, a chemistry just like this tune and a chemistry called The Grateful Dead we thank ever so much for bringing this to life
I met some members of a Colorado grateful dead tribute band and one of their shows used this as a poster. I got to talk a bit with them and they said one of the members' wives had drawn the picture.
GD is so creative! Combining RH/JG China Cat & traditional song I know you rider, JD plays magic, Bobby the best rythem guitar, Phil miracle base & I love Billy's dramming.
I saw them play songs live in 19987, 1991 and 1992 that were better than anything on the majority of their live albums. I think their peaks were 1966-1972, 1975 and 1987-1992.
I've been all over I live in New York I was born in New York raised in New York but I spent a lot of time in Oregon and I think the Oregon deadheads are probably the coolest they're all cool but they're just a little more grimy

I was an amateur freelance journalist promoting independent music out of Oakland CA (from Flint), for 17 years. Good music? Just found it. My dad came into my brother's room one time and found 16oz of pot in highschool. Cleaned it all out and made it look like the police done it. It didn't hit me until then.

This is NOT the Europe '72 version. The overall texture is slightly different. Take your pick. I like them both, but I like the way the drums sound on this one a little bit better. The other mix is more "transparent", which is good. It's kind of like being asked which one of your children is your favorite. You can't really answer. This one feels a little more "raw", versus "polished". Depends on the mood...

sorry champ... he couldnt be more right. spring '90... best tour of their career... the china cat's will steal ur face brotha... this one is relatively weak, i must say.
Why is Chinacat Sunflower such a powerful song for me? Because it reminds me that life is beautiful. Even when it seems disjointed and confusing.
fuck yeah man! i completely feel that brother
It gets me going too. Puts me in a great mood. They f#$king jam in rider. Love it.

7:56 is the perfectly smooth segue into I Know You Rider. Sublime.
This is from the Country Fair in Oregon. Videos are on Utube and are a very cool video of life back in the day.
I wish I was a headlight on a northbound train...Wait a minute...I am a headlight on a northbound train.
china rider cant get enough of it
This was the first Grateful Dead song I ever heard. I was hooked from the first guitar lick.

I'm 17 currently and I am so glad I've gotten into the Grateful Dead. This music is different, and I love it
One of the most powerful performances. You can hear just how much this song evolved following their Europe tour a few months earlier
Love the beginning when the bass come on :)
Always makes me feel good
Still beautiful as ever!!!!!

"So no one thinks anything weird's coming down on them...it's just water from the CRICK"...
Love that; shit, I love all of this. China Rider!
I love Jerry’s command of tone as he launches his solo out of Bob’s “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” bridge riff.
One of my favorite grateful dead songs. Beautiful.
And suddenly everything is ok...........
wuss81 thanks for that.
Terrapin station
Yes it is
I can’t believe they fuckin took the old video down. It showed the band playing the song and the crowd dancing to it too
fantastic version and sound! Thank you

my cockatoo jack staw loves this song and dances to it
Long live Jack the cockatoo! I used to have a cockatoo myself. He screamed every morning when the sun rose. My family didn't like that too much...
I've had a cock or two myself. Maybe even three.
@@haleymay1119maybe he was squawking for you to put on China/Rider. Then he mighta shut up and given your family the peace they wanted!.

Yeah one of the best imo too…. 74 was the best for C/R though.
Not the Europe '72 version, but obviously similar :) This one is a little more laid back...
Pigpen alive at this time.
You're obviously a late dead head fan hahaha. I think most people will agree with the late- 60's Jam band.
