  • Due to the failure of a hub, my spindle and hub were destroyed.
    This video will cover everything I did to replace my original trailer's axle with a new, stronger axle. I cover everything from safety, how to paint and primer, how shackle bolts work and proper removal, installation. I include tips to make this process easier, as well as why I upgraded. Hope you enjoy! If this video helps you in any way, it would be fantastic to get a Thumbs Up and to have you subscribe to my channel. I am coming up on my next prize giveaway soon... :) Stay tuned for more information on that.

    glad I found this one... it's just as good as the high pressure fuel video.... It's a very similar situation with my axle/hub problem.... i was on the way home when my wheel started wobbling.... I cashed in every favor and prolly lost 4 or 5 of my 9 lives.... Dexter and Marine masters trailers hooked me up though.... hopefully neither of us go thru another axle problem... they are the worst !! Good call on getting a custom axle that's rated for 3500 lbs... wish i woulda thought of that one.

      4 or 5 of 9 lives is TOOOOOO many. man oh man. Glad it worked out ok in the end. That is amazing they took care of you like that, awesome!!! If for no other reason than to remove my concerns, the 3500 axle is really nice. No longer worried at all. :)

    You have been an enormous help as the quality of your video work, and your clear explanations, have removed all of my concerns about undertaking this job. Those extra tips regarding advice about shackle bolt removal and installation, while almost obvious in hindsight, are like gold to a first timer undertaking this task. Thanks

    Great tutorial! I really appreciate you doing a video on this.
    My 1991 16ft Sun Tracker Bass Buggy Pontoon trailer has those small wheels and I'm a very leery about my boat riding around on this trailer with the small wheels especially with all the added supplies added on my boat.
    I'm also thinking about going with a better axle and larger wheels.
    Thank you for such a great video.

      If he can’t, it is actually not bad at all. Honestly, the hardest part is finding one that fits your application. I may make another video of how to take all the measurements. Trailer axles come in all sizes and shapes. Boat trailer axles are even crazier.

      @PaulsOutdoorAcademy My Ranger trailer came with brakes originally and the owner before had your problem, but it messed up the $1600 fancy fender too. So in some place in Idaho got the axle replaced with no brake option. No flange. So I got 2 new ones for $200 . Only need one but why not? Anyways I need to cut and Weld new perches on and go through your steps.

    Nice video! I have a small boat trailer for a 14 ft aluminum boat that needs new hubs but I don't know what size hubs I should purchase. I know I don't need the 3500 size you have maybe 2000 kit is all that is needed. Also need to know what type of spindle needed.

    • @PaulsOutdoorAcademy
      @PaulsOutdoorAcademy  Месяц назад

      Unless you want to buy new wheels you need to make sure the hub you get is the same is the one you already have. There are some great resources online about measuring your axle when you need one. I thought about creating a video on how to determine what you need for this very reason. Maybe I will. 😀

    • @PaulsOutdoorAcademy
      @PaulsOutdoorAcademy  Месяц назад

      Take one of your current wheels to a place that sells wheels and ask them to check the bolt pattern size for you. They are prob 4 lug or 5 lug and if they are 5 lug, they are probably 4.5x5” bolt pattern. The spindle you get has to be matched to the hub you get. I think that is why many people sell them as a kit. E trailer is a good site 😉

    What did it cost for new axel? Do they ship? I am in WA near Freeattle, I could get a free one but they use to call that stealing here. Now, it's a career.

    Why remove the leaf springs?

    • @PaulsOutdoorAcademy
      @PaulsOutdoorAcademy  5 месяцев назад

      Great question. In my case I was replacing the entire axle so disconnecting from the axle had to be done. They can stay on the frame, IF there is enough clearance to remove the axle with them installed 😎

  • @casey2993

    I was thinking that you would have to replace the leaf springs to a heavier set also.

    I've got bad grooves/missing metal on the spindle where the bearing rides. The hub/bearings seem to fit tight enough that there is no play in the bearings with the wheel on and everything put back together. But I seem to have the bearings go out once a year or so I think it is from all the salt on the roads here getting behind my seal somehow. But do you think maybe the grooves on the spindle is causing the bearings to fail?

    • @PaulsOutdoorAcademy
      @PaulsOutdoorAcademy  3 месяца назад

      It is possible the grooves are part of it but that sounds really odd for them to go out that often. When you install the bearings are you replacing both inner and outer, along with the races? Are they packed really well with grease? The salt in the road could be impacting it too. Is it bearing buddies? The Vault? Oil bath or zirc grease fitting?

    • @turdsandwicher
      @turdsandwicher 3 месяца назад

      @@PaulsOutdoorAcademy its just a basic 2000 pound axle on a 5x8 trailer. Two new bearings and races every time. No bearing buddies or anything just the grease cap. I'm thinking about just adding a zerk to the cap. When the bearings go on me the cap usually goes missing so would suck to lose a $50 bearing buddy or whatever they cost. I picked up some decent tips watching youtube here i'll give this axle another go. I haven't had one fail in the summer months on me only winter with salt and slush. Going to clean up where the seal sits better with emery cloth and I think maybe I wasn't seating the hub properly. Apparently you should tighten to about 50ft pounds then back off and finger tighten.
