Straight out of high school I worked selling shoes. I must have sold 10,000 pairs of YSL men's loafers over a few years time. I sold so many, that my boss came down from his office and asked if I knew who the designer was. I hadn't a clue, I barely knew what fashion designer was in 1977. My boss informed me that I was selling the very best men's loafers ever made.
When Lowri Turner saw a YSL collection for the first time she was disaapointed, remarking that the clothes reminded her of Simplicity Patterns. What would she expect, a new silhouette every season--like his Trapeze line from 1958? I can think of a number of designers, like Pierre Cardin, whose "innovative" designs from earlier decades look embarrassingly ludicrous today (they did, even back then, for the most part). Another one is Andre Courreges. At its best, the smplicity of YSL's creations is transcendent--though, admittedly, his talent has been very much hyped.
