Hi Niko, I started windsurfing when I was 13 et restarted this year at 52! You were very helpful in getting me to understand how to use my impulse purchase... a JP Hydrofoil 135 ! Now that I got re-hooked I need to rejuvenate my ‘vintage ‘ gear which includes a F2 Comet and a Mistral Diamond Head! I’m not even mentioning the collection of old gear given to me over the years by my friends who switched to kitting! A slalom sail and a new board would be a great start, but I would also appreciate your support on choosing a foil specific sail. You’re doing a great job with this channel, please continue!

Just come back to windsurfing after 15 years off... The world has totally changed !! Boards and gears are different… windsurfers are flying with foils… and RUclips now provides the best tips from the pros! And yes, that’s the best part !
Thank you for your videos about simple things for you, but which makes our sailing more enjoyable for us.

Mic, I live in Hawaii too. If you want to learn windsurfing, your best move would be to check the weather reports for a windy period and try to get to Maui for three or four days of lessons. No one is formally giving lessons on Oahu or elsewhere on the islands that I know of. Summer would be the best time.
Windsurfing, unfortunately, is fairly difficult to learn (in kiting, you can learn how to fly the kite first, then go to the water, whereas in windsurfing, you have to be on the water to truly feel how the sail interacts with the wind and how the board interacts with the water.) You need time on the water, reinforced over a few days time, to get some of the basics down. It's also pretty exhausting to learn if you don't have someone telling you the proper manuevers and what you're doing wrong.
I say this because if you are already proficient at these other watersports, you might get frustrated early on with the slow learning curve of windsurfing. Going from basic uphauling to waterstarting, staying upwind, harness, footstraps, and eventually jibing, each one of these steps can take considerable time to learn. On the other hand, I have seen some people go from basics to full planing and landing most of their jibes in about a year (learning in California, it took me a year to make my first jibe, and it was several weeks before I landed another one.)
      Good luck!

I learned back in the 80s with a HiFly 355 but gave it up due to few occasions nearby. Living at Starnberg lake we have not too many good windsurfing days, and going to Walchensee or Garda lake here and then was still not enough to gain skill. Like 3 years ago I started another attempt and bought me some intermediate gear. My son wanted to join two years ago, when he was 8, and tought me to see much more chances to get out on the water. This year he had his first near-planing experience, but also his first scary moment being hooked in underneath the sail and not getting it released immediately. But instead of being shocked he wants to improve and ride more and faster. I think your videos play a significant role here :-) And I did also make good progress thanks to your tutorials. In case this comment wins, we just have to see who of us two will get the gear. All the best, have always fun!

Windsurfing is such a great family sport. You need to get your dad back out on the water with you. You will never regret spending that quality time with him. Boards today and foiling is making it much more family friendly. I got back into windsurfing after my kid was old enough to appreciate the sport. But just like you, he wanted to quit. I gave him the motivation to stick with it. Glad that your persistence paid off. I have been watching your videos for some time and they are getting really good. Keep up the good work.

Hey Nico ! I began windsurfing when I was 8 when we were in holidays with my brother and my parents. It was in 1992, my parents bought a Bic Calypso (2nd hand) and a gear for beginners. After initiation, first plannings and wow... Since These times, I'm completely in love with windsurfing. For me, it's THE Sport I like to do. When you tag #MakeWindsurfGreatAgain, It's exactly what I think, because I began to practice early, I saw popularity of windsurfing go high and low. This year I began to foil and I'm very happy to have a new challenge and something to learn again. All your videos are so helpful to improve our skills, to learn more about your life of professional windsurfer, so : a big thank to you Nico, for your videos and for let us dream about professionals stuff, about a life to do windsurf the most time of our days ! I hope to have one day the chance to sail with professionals like you. Cheers from Belgium ;-)

Winsurfing is the most difficult but most rewarding sport i ever done! Started at 11 and practice 5-7hours day for 4 years at the cottage during summer here in Canada. I sailed almost all my teen years on that small lake and learned buy magazine and vhs video of Robby Naish. Funny how my beginning was simillar i swear so much and wanted to quit so many time but i persevered and got so much good memories from it. Started on a Tiga speed, tiga jibe and then my fisrt custom 100l slalom board. Sailed in Dominican Republic, Aruba, Barbados, Hawaii, Cuba. A long way from learning on a 2km small lake. The rush you get when skipping full blast overpowered on a hot sunny day! Thank you for this video made me go back in my memory ! I am 50 now and still windsurf a couple time a year.

I still have a lot to learn and it would me amazing to have my own materials. So far, I have always been using their gear. This means I cannot always surf if everybody else wants to surf as well. I actually don't mind at all because they are so generous to let me use everything but I just don't want them sacrificing their surfing time for me. Liked your story a lot :) Probably not going to end up at that level AT ALL but I'm enjoying myself :)

Hey there mate! Awesome video. I wanted to get a windsurfer when I was 18 years old. Dad said it'll be a 5 minute fad! I'm almost 54 now and still love it as much as I did when I was 18. I don't get out as much as I used to being a carer for dad but it'll always be in my blood til I die. I remember my mum being really supportive of my interest in windsurfing from the beginning. Sadly we lost mum last year but I remember my 1st time almost planning on my 1st 20 plus kg non retractable centre sailboard, and soft sail. ... it felt amazing! I told mum and she was pretty excited for me. Those little things had such an effect on me. Then there's watching the weather everyday lol.😆 and my 1st day sailing in the waves where all you could see was white water waves on waves. ...it was awesome fun and survived! Great video brought back lots of memories for me!

Very cool to hear similarities across the world. After a few good wrecks on the tracks at pro level, was looking for something like DH MTB racing but with less impact when crashing. Found Windsurfing last fall and am hooked. I tell my MTB buddies 'It's the Free Ride MTB of the water'. Got my first real board this spring, Volar 145 and some 7.3-8.2NP sails, already out grown them over this season flat water blasting and hitting The Gorge USA and can't wait for more. Cheers bud!

Nico. I am trilled to see this film and hear your story. I was happy to hear about your family support, your wonderful spots available (including Wiek which I also love) and all your steps to carrier. I saw you in SURF magazine receiving your praise. So good that you found such great chance. I love watching your films and I enjoy them a lot. Also learning.
My story was just opposite. I never had a chance for support of parents or whoever but instead a strange longing for water adventure which made my build my first board in 1976. What a fun was the first sailing and learning maneuver. For a while it was fun but then life cause a stop for that (I live behind your eastern border). Around the year 2000 I was able to buy on e-bay a second hand gear and started again. Today I am pretty older but still enjoying that wonderful sport. Using our local spots but my dreams are on Ruegen:) . Have fun friend and maybe see you once on water. Aloha

you are lucky one to get started so early. I have started in my thirties and known nobody who is windsurfing. But love it more and more every day. Thanks for your videos and keep it rolling!

I have been doing windsurfing for many years and at some point, I felt like I had stopped evolving.
Early last summer I started watching your videos and applying what you teach us.
I think that now my technique has taken off to other levels. Maybe it's time to change equipment.
Nikos, thank you very much for what I learned from you.

Hi Nico, I am windsurfing few years and I am advancing every year...your videos and your YT channel is very inspiring, you are sharing a lot of valuable information's. Thank you for that. I am from Croatia and I am progressing my technique mostly in summer period when I am on seaside. I am based in Zagreb(300 km from seaside) and the nearest lake is around 30min. but unfortunately winds are not so often there. As I am following your YT channel I have seen that you are giving away your slalom/race gear which is great....a lot of space for progression :) This way I am reaching out :)
Regardless of the result, I wish you even more followers and all the best in your private and professional life.
    Cheers.
    Best Regards,

I liked this video you looking back of your career. It brought back some good memories of me. When i was sixteen i bought my first windurfboard eith a triangle sail. I had worked for in summer. With friends we went windsurfing. We made fire at the beach. Once we had sausage in a can. We eanted to boil them. So we had them put in a aluminum waterbottle and hang it on pole with a wire waiting to boil after some minutes one of our friends asked how are we going to get them out. The anwer came right aeay. Due to the pressure of boiling the sausage flew out of the botle. Life is like a beach. I have moved to the usa and there was no lake. When i got back to the Netherlands i forgot about windsurfing due to the fact of falling in love. Now 15 years ago I was camping and suffering from burn out. After 11 days we visited a friend camping at a lake. It was beautifull weather with 5 beaufort if wind. My friend offered to use his gear and after a day of windsurfing I felt so great. I list the fealing of having a burn out. Since then i windsurf as much as I can in my free time. In 2010 I went on a clinic of Guy Cribb which was great. He tought me so much. Now I teach other windsurfers to improve their skills and I really enjoy your youtube movies which make me a better windsurfing teacher and windsurfer. Thanks for sharing all this. It is great to windsurf and enjoy doing with my daughter or friends.

Mega cool story. The (your, my, our) fight against wind wave and temperature put a smile on everyone's face.
My passion for surfing began over 20 years ago and I would soon put a huge smile on my face with a * new board * :-) Keep following your path and let us users participate in the diversity of the sport in your video. Greetings from Berlin :-) Ronny

Congratulation on so much in such a short time. We have community from 2006, HiFly 4.0 is still around waiting repair... In our bay we are seen like disturb for big tourist boats so it is really hard life to teach children to sail and that it is prohibited in same time. So, the law says, if boat run over some kid, we have to pay repair for the boat. We teach 400+ people without incident, but we are still sailing "under the radar"... Only 10 people came to planing speeds and 5 to 25-30 knots... So really congratulation, you put lot of work in it...

I appreciate your channel and tutorials (I especially liked the PDF on the carve jibe and tuning the gear), Jason Polakow has been my hero in the late 90’s and I love the look and feel of his boards. After a pause of around 20 years and +20 kg in weight, I’m dreaming of a super sport to do some serious speeds. I wish the winner all the best with his new gear.

Hey Nico...I’ve been watching your videos a lot. Always very helpful and inspirational. Started windsurfing again after a long break. I began when I was 9 years old...back then on the old windsurfer, heavy sail and wooden boom 😄. Last year my brother got me back into it and I started to teach my kids. Keep up your awesome work, dedication and spirit. Looking forward to new videos..cheers 🤙🏻

    Hi Nico,
I started to learn windsurfing on a Dufour Wing 40 years ago at the age of 10 and ended in 2006 on a Bic Vivace 270. I bouhgt my first home which needed some renovation ☹. About 5 weeks ago I noticed a lot of “homeworkers”, because of covid-19, on their windsurfboards. I still have my windsurfgear so I started windsurfing again after 14 years. The first day was just a big disappointment. Wind blowing with 25+ knots and fighting the chop my first jibe didn’t went very well. Laying in the water I rotated my sail and tried to rotate the cambers (NS Warp) … After a few minutes in the water I was thinking of swimming back to the shore. But sudddenly the rescue-team arrived. They asked me if I needed a ride. That was a very embarrassing moment for me. I said yes.
But I am still motivated and found you on RUclips, How to : Fly over chop 😊

Nice to hear about your start in windsurfing. I've been windsurfing since 1978 and I have no plans of giving it up. In fact started windfoiling this year, so a new JP foil board with the 7.4 would be ace!

Ah man. I'm just now beginning my obsession and can't believe I've just discovered even the feeling you get just watching these videos. Never windsurfed yet... watching all these videos on beginning. Windsurfing isn't really a thing here though it's right on the ocean. Looking for lessons but have to book a vacay to get to one lol, which may or may not be a bad thing 🤔

I started when I was about 12 or so. I grew up around the sea. Luckily for me I was able to jump on and go from the first time I tried it. I used to take my dog with me on my board when I sailed on the lake. Some of my fondest memories of my youth. I am now in my 50's and have the bug again. I am now looking to get a rig and start doing it again... :)

That was a great video and I also remember the first time I windsurfed I thought it was so cool. I tried it on a lake for the first time and I was unable to get back to shore so my wife towed me in with a paddleboat. But that did not stop me from learning how to windsurf I think it's the best support because it's just me and mother nature. The sound the sail makes as the wind go across the sail is awesome and reminds me of the power of mother nature. take care brother
