If you also think of this story as a way to tell time, the cat serves the metaphysical purpose of making time infinite (chasing the rat means the year starts back over again with the first animal who arrived-- the first month of the year-- the stars return to their original position in the sky).
In this way...I think astrology might have been used by ancient people to tell us the astronomy/time of their events and disasters because they're going to loop back around and repeat in the future (stone carvings, tablets, imagery, etc.) ..... :o
So the cat is very very important indeed!

The difference between the Chinese zodiac and Vietnamese zodiac :
1/ In China :Year of the OX.....In Vietnam : Year of the BUFFALO.
2/ In China : Year of the RABBIT.....In Vietnam : Year of the CAT.
3/ In China : Year of the GOAT ( Some area in China Year of the SHEEP )......In Vietnam : Year of the GOAT.
