I think a lot of people miss some of the points made in this presentation. Even if you don't believe in any of this, if you work with any number of Chinese people (who believe this, plenty see it as bs) this would be useful to gauge how they might act around others and how they try to understand others. Understanding Culture is never a bad thing
Astrology is not about beleifs, its about objectivity. Out of all the ideas you get of a situation Astrology is a consideration. It is not right or wrong.
Personally, I thought this was an excellent talk. In the amount of time she had, she was able to describe the basics of the Chinese zodiac. It does not matter whether you agree with it or not, but it is important to learn about other people's cultures and their traditions. Plus, it's an interesting conversation starter :)
It's quite interesting how the chinese zodiac signs are suprisingly very accurate. I was born in the year of the dragon, and many teachers at my school have said that our year level is one of the most intelligent and talented that they have seen in a long time.
So your dad is either 5 years older than your mom (or 7 years younger). Your mom had you at 26 (or 38). Your sister is 3 years younger than you (or 9 years older)
Good guess. You're right. Except my sister is 2 and half years younger rather than 3. I was born in January, before the Chinese new year of 1992, so I fell under the goat year.
The animals and their sequence are based on an ancient story about a race that all the animals of the world competed in; the first twelve contestants became the zodiacs. The rat, ox, tiger, and so on finished first, so that determines the sequence. I'm not sure what determines how lucky each animal is. I think most of the traits associated with each zodiac come from the Chinese's observation of them in nature.
the animal determination came from an ancient myth that was basically a race to Heaven and the order in which the animals arrived determined the zodiac
When she showed the years for each animals, I wondered when all this started? Like which year in the history was the first rat/mouse year? Nobody back to the very beginning would had had such stereotypical superstitious judgements supposedly.
To understand the Chinese zodiac is to understand the inner workings of each individual. I’ve been studying it as long as I can remember(I’m an analytical snake). I use it as a tool, to help me understand others and what makes them tick. It’s easy to see how this can not only help you relate to others, thereby mitigating potential conflict, but it also gives you a leg up on potential competition, be it in your business or personal life! I truly believe people who choose not to invest time into understanding the Chinese zodiac are doing themselves a great disservice!
otaku_dreamz No I don't, don't take everything too seriously lmao.. And don't judge people who do so, everyone can believe in whatever he wants, alright?
Thank you #ShaoLan for a really interesting talk. I agree it's so important to understand the culture and history of different people in the world if we're to make a lasting connection with others in the global community. We in the West benefit greatly learning from cultures that have survived for thousands of years. Chinese Astrology, as well as many other ancient systems of tracking time cycles, trends and more recently insights into personality, is a fascinating subject and worthy of study. When watching your +Chineasy videos I'm reminded how much our thinking, and therefore our actions, are influenced by the words and pictures in our minds. And by understanding the building blocks of a culture which include the stories, symbols and metaphors of it's past and present citizens, we can more understand other people and ourselves.
(*For anyone concerned, this was something I wrote on the day this video was posted, when people in the comments were really being mean. It doesn't apply so much to the comments on this video anymore. I mean no offense to anyone here. Actually, I think it's nice to know that so many people wanted to watch this video, and have positive things to say these days.) Reading this comment section has reminded me of something I've recently been trying to ignore: the majority of RUclips commenters are some of the stupidest and most bigoted people in the world. For those of you who missed it, this video was explaining what the Chinese zodiac is, and what effects the belief system has in the real world, including some of the modern-day effects on global culture. She is not trying to make a stand on whether this is good or bad, and she is not trying to convince people to believe in it or follow it. All this presenter does is point out that this exists, and says that you would be wise to acknowledge that this belief system exists, and that you should pay attention to how it affects the world around you. It would be in your best interests to take into consideration how widespread beliefs affect attitudes, behaviours, and policy -- especially because, in spite of first appearances, this will have some level of effect on your own personal life. That's what this presentation is about. But apparently a lot of you viewers out there fail to see that and complain, "Blah blah, is not scientific, meh meh, waste uf my time." How nice to see how close-minded you still are.
Ever since I was a kid, learning about the Chinese zodiac for the first time, I always thought I was a rabbit. I was born in 1999, year of the rabbit, and my dad is even a rabbit himself. But a few years ago, I discovered that it wasn't the case; in 1999, the lunar new year didn't start until the 16th of February, and I was born on the 15th, three hours before midnight! So in actuality, I'm a tiger; a yang-earth-tiger to be exact. Coming to terms with it, I feel like tiger resonates with me more than rabbit ever did. Moral of the story: if you're looking into your Chinese zodiac sign and your birthday is anywhere between January and February, double check to see if the new year was before or after your birthday. You're welcome in advance.
Me too! I thought I'm Rat until when i in secondary school only realise I borned before chinese new year so I'm Boar. That's make sense I like to take a nap hahahhahah
yes i just found this video cuz this exact situation! thought this entire time since seeing it on cantonese menu that i was goat! january 2003 im actually horse! crazy how that works
You cannot determine what Chinese Zodiac sign you are based on what year in which you were born according to the Western calendar. I spent most of my life thinking I was a Dragon, only later to learn that I'm actually a Rabbit because the Chinese New Year did not start until Mid-February in 1988.
I am a Tiger.. My temper is appropriate to the situation. When it comes to my children.. Thats when i get in crazy mode. My Granddaughter is also a Tiger.. she is the calmest kid i know.. Very intelligent and a leader among her pears. I dated a Dragon for about 4 years. He did not have power.. He had EGO..

I love the chinese zodiac because it is very accurate. I’ve learned to rely on it time and again. For example my first marriag was very problamatic and only lasted 7 years. I married the sign directly opposit me... a big no no. Now I am in a very healthy, awesome, fun, 22 year relationship with the sign most complimentary to mine. The personality traits always fit the the year asigned, just sometimes we don’t recognise ourselves!

even if i dont personally believe it, westerns have to respect this way a little if it honestly influnce billions of peoples economic and social decisions. lets open our eyes and have a little more respect for other cultures
I am from the Ilocos Sur , Philippines. Our family believes in Chinese zodiac. We have a book called " Lunario" that serves as a guide before making a big decision like marriage, building a house and etc... By the way I am a Dragon (1976) I am a dragon (1976)
I'm a tiger virgo too and I once read a page that combined the east and west zodiac which was so dead on. It spoke about how the tiger is adventurous and impulsive which makes the virgo less "uptight" in details but the virgo harnesses the tiger into something that together creates someone goal oriented with a zest for life. We like fun but still do our chores and plan out our bills and such. :p I'm of course paraphrasing but it was along those lines and it was a rather long text that explained it way better than I ever can. :) I think the tiger makes us a more fun virgo friend :p
As someone born in the year of the dragon (1988) and in fact my surname is dragon (龙), I can tell you that I have faced a lot of setbacks in life. I've been rejected by my first choice universities, companies I've applied to and people I admire. It is nothing to do with not trying, people know me to be very hardworking, ambitious and charming. It is only when I focused a lot more on my spiritual self and cared less for material things that life got easier for me. What I'm trying to say is, honestly - these zodiac things are nonsense. Just be the best person you can be and treat those around you well! God (or the higher power or the universe, or whatever you want to call it) will take care of the rest!
Yes, absolutely. From time to time I fear a bit for my destiny because I have both my western sign and Chinese sign representing or tied to evil or Satan across many different cultures. Those are Aries and the snake respectively. I grew up atheist but then grew more spiritual as I studied philosophy and meditation in my late teens. But yeah, at most, astrology could be a rough map of your position in the world, a sort of symbolic analogy of your spiritual metaphysical self, rather than a hard determinant on who you are, and how will things go for you. We all make our own destiny.
Of course it doesn't work. Those descriptions are written so vague that they could apply to mostly anyone. The same with the western zodiac. Here's what you do to figure out whether or not it is legit. Gather a room full of about 60 people. Read a few zodiac descriptions aloud to the group. Ask for a show of hands on how many people agree that they apply to them. If 1/12 of the people agree it applies to them, then there might be some merit. But if over half of the hands go up, likely it is complete bullshit written to apply to just about anyone.
It's a great presentation. I love that at the end she basically admits that China has subtle control over the United States government Very enlightening.
She said we should do something about it... So we should explain how illogical it is to believe ALL people born in a single year to share similar personalities?
I got fascinated by her speech and checked out my zodiac sign (Fire Ox) just to encounter that it describes the absolute opposite of my personality. A pity since my western one (Libra) fits well with me. Welp, I won't be trusting in any zodiac any time soon, but I get that it is important to know when dealing with chinese people. I wonder if I should lie and tell them the sign that best describes me... I would have to hide my age though.
Dude, chinese zodiac doesn't really represent ur personality. Its nothing like the 12 zodiac. One thing for sure is that Chinese people talk abt zodiac like aries, taurus that kinda.U can certainly talk with them abt that.Young people r crazy abt it.
You should know that not every Chinese person believes in the Chinese zodiac, especially if they were raised in America. And lying about your zodiac is just pointless because it's not really that big of a deal in terms of personality.
Sometimes if Chinese parents really wanted a son and have a daughter instead they'll kill their child so that they don't have to take care of it and they won't have to pay a fine when they try to have another child that's a boy
Ray Gabriel Where does this come from? Killing a baby is murdering which is punishable by death, and it absolutely does not affect anyone's right to give birth.
There's nothing wrong about criticizing pseudo-science. It's stupid traditional beliefs that lead to extinction of animals like elephants and rhinos because people believe horns or tusks hold some magical cure for their erections. (I'm ethnic Chinese and an atheist who believes in science rather than superstition).
Let me tell you there are some things I agree are really silly. I don't know how silly Zodiac is but it just doesn't come out of nowhere. Its interesting to see where these things come from. I myself am also from an eastern religion that I abandoned but when i remove myself from it I see there were actually a lot of truth to it (in some parts)
Why do you think that it is not ok to criticize your heritage and culture? If something about your culture is stupid and there´s no reason for it to exist, then it´s better if you stop perpetuating it.
You are not suppose to have luck if its your year. if its your year you are suppose to have trials, you should be wary when your year comes. Thats what I was thought and people say in Mongolia.
Wow as usual people in the internet are mean, quick to judge and completely misunderstand the purpose of things and where she is coming from. I appreciated this talk and her intentions
When you bring people together that work together you become luckier ;) another clue for you... for I am a Tiger and know Billionaires in the US that are successful Tigers.. Competition is every where but Tigers are equal to Aquarius which are very creative as well... An air sign... Dragons can have volatile temperaments depending on what month or day and hour they are born on... Very complicated so you are right it makes sense with the chart you have because people should not make assumptions on anything... it is not exactly what youre told and must be able to study this in it's entirety to understand it..
It's sad that an entire nation of so many people is so invested in mythology like this that they actually put their babies' lives at risk by having them born early.
It's not mythology, it's superstition. Chinese (not only the chinese though) are incredibly superstitious. For example, when a child is born, they need to cover the mirrors with a red paper and the new mom cannot look into them (I don't know if this applies to all china or just my families area) (yes I'm chinese). You also have this belief in korea where sleeping with a fan on will kill you. When my cousins got married, they went to a temple to ask some kind of dude if they (my cousin and his fiancée) would fit each other. My family in china often goes to the temple for everything, from my future to childrens name. I don't believe in superstition at all though.
I am chianese, but, what she said? i cant understand what she said.,nobody care the means of zodiac in china.and every chinese zodiac is equal. i wanna tell everybody chinese have given up this stupid ideas.
This is Hai, a chinese. I have to say it is an interesting talk with those chart and figure. But if your want to know more about Zodiac, it is better to talk with your Chinese friends. It is a part of Chinese culture. People choose to believe it or talk about it, and it is a part of our life. The reason is simple but it is hard to make you understood with such kind of talk because the history is accumulations of time. But hope you like it and make you happy.
Better not answer then if you don't want to have your Chinese friend evaluate you based on some ridiculous superstition. Also, how did you know my Chinese friend was a buck toothed stereotype?
Sweet Rabbit? Im beginning to think Rabbits are drama queens, both the male and female. I have a daughter who's a rabbit, and while she is sweet and considerate, vibrant and all that, I have also observed that she seems to get some secret satisfaction out of sparking drama, and whining and complaining for its own sake. Also she is, IMO unreasonably scared of everything
@@HyenaKiller Definitely not me. I hate drama. I'm drama free. Not all Rabbits are the same. Its depends when where what time you were born. This is very important facts in astrology. I have a Rabbit friends but we are opposite. I don't like to be around with dramatic people 🤗😊

I was hoping for a more in depth explanation, like how or what determines the animals and how lucky they are.
The order has to do with this race and the order comes from the place. No animal is more lucky than another.

But yeah, at most, astrology could be a rough map of your position in the world, a sort of symbolic analogy of your spiritual metaphysical self, rather than a hard determinant on who you are, and how will things go for you. We all make our own destiny.
Doesn't work. I'm a dragon and my life sucks
Really? The Dragon is certainly the most prominent sign. Consider yourself fortunate!
I'm a Dragon and I'm awesome
We wear our confidence as a natural aroma *****
It only works for Chinese (and only when it works), dude.
Great information!!!👍👍👍☺️☺️☺️💗💝💜💙💚💛
It's a great presentation. I love that at the end she basically admits that China has subtle control over the United States government Very enlightening.
very proud to be year of the dragon. haha💕
#TeamDragon Hype
YOU are my enemy! Beware the wrath of the fiery Ox!!! XD
nope ;)
+Mark Levers As well as Dogs, Tigers and the occasional Dragon 👀
+Samson Thompson
Well jeez! I'm sorry we're so terrible to you lmao
She said we should do something about it... So we should explain how illogical it is to believe ALL people born in a single year to share similar personalities?
Can say the same about horoscopes too.
@@Ricangelo you cant because in western asrrology you have the sun sign, moon sign, rising rign etc, then all the 12 houses
I am also a Libra and a Ox. I feel the complete opposite, the personality traits of Ox fits me so well lol
Dude, chinese zodiac doesn't really represent ur personality. Its nothing like the 12 zodiac. One thing for sure is that Chinese people talk abt zodiac like aries, taurus that kinda.U can certainly talk with them abt that.Young people r crazy abt it.
So you are 18 born in 97 September or October. You're a hard worker and mostly no nonsense
+Crystalized Sirenity a ox is a hard worker but communicates bad hopefully you over that
You should know that not every Chinese person believes in the Chinese zodiac, especially if they were raised in America. And lying about your zodiac is just pointless because it's not really that big of a deal in terms of personality.
Those heels! Damn she is beautiful! Great fashion and great accent. Seriously though, I learned a lot here. I never knew my element before.
those were some sick presentation slides
how do you control the boy / girl birth ratio? abortion?
Yeah
that's what i thought...
That used to be the case, but it has been made illegal to know the baby's gender before birth in China.
That's very interesting--I wonder if western zodiac or metaphysical principals have similar data trends
I'm Chinese and this is just plain stupid.
You don't have to believe it at all but saying things against your heritage and culture like that is just disgusting.
Yeah, but you can't deny it's interesting
Let me tell you there are some things I agree are really silly. I don't know how silly Zodiac is but it just doesn't come out of nowhere. Its interesting to see where these things come from.
I myself am also from an eastern religion that I abandoned but when i remove myself from it I see there were actually a lot of truth to it (in some parts)
Why do you think that it is not ok to criticize your heritage and culture? If something about your culture is stupid and there´s no reason for it to exist, then it´s better if you stop perpetuating it.
Great video
Captivating and interesting
Happy tiger here :D
*_imagine a person who was born under the ox sign who's hardworking but conservative even a tardy one.. yeah that's me_*
Me OX too lol
Ox here too
I'm a tiger and I plan on becoming rich
same
Just realized that this video was released in my birthday
谢谢你,我每天学习一点儿中文 This was fascinating to listen to, fantastic presentation! Cheers 😃🙏🏼
Wait, an account called TED is uploading a video about the ZODIAC? Hmmm....
This was supposed to be my year. but I've had nothing but bad luck.
year isn't done tho. lets see soon.
I'm sure you've used up all your bad luck for this year first. So you only good things to come!! Best of luck :)
You are not suppose to have luck if its your year. if its your year you are suppose to have trials, you should be wary when your year comes. Thats what I was thought and people say in Mongolia.
It is considered bad luck when it is your year
always have bad luck on your year.
Im a rabbit but everyone in my class are dragons HM MMMMM
theflowergod I’m a rabbit as well (fire rabbit) I think we are pretty cool. Though being more bold would be nice lol
Haha, my family has fire horse, fire goat, metal snake (me, lol) and tree rooster. :')
Am a metal snake or gold snake it is... Rare people though!
she is so gorgeous!! :)
I don't believe in superstition at all though.
because yes, it's indeed a very stupid thing and for me it's very illogical
Same thing with religion..
This is such a westerner comment.
+swallowmyjizz How?
Great, I would like more info on the subject. I am a rooster and this is my year!
good sharing
Well, dragon has the most population. Im a dragon myself
And I'm a dog
im a dragon lol.
born in 2000
im so unlucky though..
dragons for lyfe bro
Dragons luck runs hot to very cold. It seems to run with how much they are loved. Be nicer to people as an experiment and track your luck ;)
Same. We're metal dragons
I'm 16 in 4 days :D
otaku_dreamz 96
So the birthratio was 6 to 5. What happened to thousands of girl babies huh?
Does it seem inconceivable to you that they weren't born?
I think more girls were aborted. Sad. This happens a lot in cultures where boys are ore valued.
They're given to the White Walkers.
thijsjong No doubt millions of Chinese single men feel the same way.
+Deni THS no even the white walkers only want the boys. Remember
This could have been a really interesting statistics discussion, but what it was was something I could have googled in 10 seconds
Most informative.
Channel name TED. Title has "zodiac" in it. Coincidence? I think not
Chinese Zodiac - Ox
Greek Zodiac - Libra
Well then...
Same but I have the Virgo's personality
I am chianese, but, what she said? i cant understand what she said.,nobody care the means of zodiac in china.and every chinese zodiac is equal. i wanna tell everybody chinese have given up this stupid ideas.
A people group can only be valued by others when it values itself. I think the zodiac is much cooler than the European zodiacs.
I think so,,,
I don't believe in either Zodiac, but it's still an interesting talk.
I can't understand what you said . Learn how to spell properly lol
ok、、、、、、、、、、、、、
This is Hai, a chinese. I have to say it is an interesting talk with those chart and figure. But if your want to know more about Zodiac, it is better to talk with your Chinese friends. It is a part of Chinese culture. People choose to believe it or talk about it, and it is a part of our life. The reason is simple but it is hard to make you understood with such kind of talk because the history is accumulations of time. But hope you like it and make you happy.
Thank you
This dragon wants to know where can I get those boots!
NO ONE EVER TALKS ABOUT CHICKENS! Preferably, I like to call them chackens.
It just makes me sad ;(
Furby Craft im chackens
You make me glad that I scrolled down this far! So worth it now!
But you ban Rupert Sheldrake's talk. Good job
Watching this on Lunar New Year. :)
Better not answer then if you don't want to have your Chinese friend evaluate you based on some ridiculous superstition. Also, how did you know my Chinese friend was a buck toothed stereotype?
Most people prefer Dragons bc their lucky! Me: A dragon EYYYY 🤪
My sign is opposite your sign in the chinese zodiac, this means we are not compatible 😥
I’m sweet Rabbit and surrounding by dragon and snake. 😭
Rabbits are actually Cats not Rabbits.
@@HyenaKiller Definitely not me. I hate drama. I'm drama free. Not all Rabbits are the same. Its depends when where what time you were born. This is very important facts in astrology. I have a Rabbit friends but we are opposite. I don't like to be around with dramatic people 🤗😊
@@illartist18 In Vietnamese they called Cat but chinese is Rabbit. They are both Similar. I guess
This means your best matches are goat, dog and pig
She is very informative and well spoken
