    The Bakerloo Line is so overloaded that we must offload one branch and run it as the separate Fleet Line. Okay! We've done that and called it the Jubilee line. So let's build another branch to put us back to where we were. Yep! That sounds like a plan.

    Some of us remember the red Bakerloo line trains at Watford Junction. And the early morning trains from Wimbledon to Waterloo via East Putney. Also the late train at 0130 from Holborn Viaduct for the newspaper people. Very useful after a good night out. There was also an empty stock DEMU from London Bridge to Selhurst Depot. No guard and no ticket needed. Always held at Streatham for a while so off you get and a free ride home.

    Another great video!
    The problem of extending tube lines (which needs to happen) is that it brings yet more people into the centre of the city. Many stations there can no longer cope with the number of passengers now using them. Tfl's priority now must be to greatly increase passenger capacities at these stations before overloading the system even more with new links.

    Well packaged, but not present and certainly not unwrapped. Which suggests to me that the "issues" they were trying to solve still exist. I can see that the rebranding of Overground lines around London is an attempt to give them some more life, make them more popular and move people around by different means. But thats not really added capacity either. Like Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol", they'll have to go and think it out again. So maybe we'll get something improved in about another 60 years. Cant wait.

    To be honest, I'd probably regularly use a route if it actually went from somewhere like Turkey Street to Chelsea via Hackney Downs. A Chelsea-to-Hackney route, or Chelsack line, would probably bring a bit of culture to the borough of kensington. But would it use the existing Lea Valley line? Maybe it could start at Hackney Central and have an interchange?

    It does leave one question hanging. What else could be done to help the problem of the District having 3 branches in the West?

    • @paintedpilgrim
      @paintedpilgrim 14 часов назад +1

      The Chelsea-Hackney line or Cross rail 2 could take over much of the load from the Wimbledon branch if that's the route selected.
      I'd argue however retaining the route under a new name extending up through Olympia perhaps linking in with the West London Line extension being planned giving a second additional orbital route.
      That would leave the district line with two branches in the West.
      Depending on the route chosen CR2 could also take some of the load of the Richmond branch too which would in theory leave less overcrowding on the line once it reaches Earls Court...
      The problem with CR2 however as it stands is beyond the central core it has the choice of 3 potential routes north and 3 potential routes south.
      I'd argue that is too much for any 1 line.
      I would also argue that in time we will see the 2 eastern branches or CR1 become too much and would argue for the Abbey Wood branch be the impetus for a NW-SE Crossrail 3

    As always an interesting video about what might have been. You commented on how long it takes to get a railroad built in Britain. I would suggest nothing near as long as one in New York City. Then again I am hoping that a study currently underway might bring passenger service back to where I live. Something this area located on the Delmarva Peninsula had not had for more than 60 years. Hope springs eternal.

    It could have allowed the Bakerloo to take over the Greenford branch line from Ealing as well as run through what would later become Old Oak Common, at Greenford it could have also been useful during proposals for the Central line to run to Uxbridge as a possible alternative. Were there any plans to create a link between Stonebridge park on the Bakerloo and Sudbury Town on the Piccadilly, which would have provided another Bakerloo route to Uxbridge while allowing the Piccadilly to run more trains to Heathrow?

Isnt West Acton relatively close to the Old Oak Common area and hence some additional connectivity to London might be handy ? Also if Bakerloo gets its eastern extensions to Lewisham and Hayes / (why not Crystal Palace or Thamesmead ? ) this would give balanced ends on a middle trunk

    I think the extension of the Bakerloo line to Ealing Broadway as good idea. I would suggest the Richmond branch be migrated to a new Metropolitan Line style fast line from Turnham Green to Bank using part of the old Fleet line. It would create extra capacity. The main cost would be the New Tunnels under the A402 East of Hammersmith.

    The most sensible option (to deal with the Western Branch issue of the District Line) would be to extend the LTS/C2C line from Fenchurch Street to Richmond via Bank/Cannon Street, Charring Cross, Victoria, Chelsea, Earls Court, Hammersmith & Turnham Green.
    That way, the District Line would only have 2 branches out west to Ealing Broadway & Wimbledon.

    • @paintedpilgrim
      @paintedpilgrim 13 часов назад

      Look at the ideas for Crossrail 2. It could potentially take over not just the Wimbledon branch but take off some of the weight from Richmond too....depending on the eventual routes chosen.

    • @MrSmith1984
      @MrSmith1984 13 часов назад

      @paintedpilgrim
      Previous proposals for Crossrail 2 did include incorporating the Wimbledon Branch of the District Line, however that has been changed (since 2015) in favour of taking over the Metro Routes of SWR.
      I would personally favour this, but only if the Core Section of Crossrail 2 (Wimbledon to Angel) is Upgraded to 4-Track to allow for a 48-60tph core frequency and thus enable high frequencies on the SWR Metro Branches.
      It's also why I have also advocated that LTS/C2C Extension to Richmond as well. Which has the added benefit of easing the burden on the District Line between Tower Hill & Turnham Green alongside reorganising the District Line itself to consist of 2 separate (& grade-seperated) Upminster to Ealing Broadway + Edgware Road to Wimbledon Services.

    • @paintedpilgrim
      @paintedpilgrim 13 часов назад

      @@MrSmith1984 Wimbledon is still considered part of the core even with the 2015 Plan. And could take over much of the longer distance journeys into Central London.
      Though District Line services would still be needed to cover shorter journeys.
      Including some of the Southwest Metro routes in CR2 also wouldnt stop them being served by mainline rail services, and could give additional capacity especially given the 12 car units planned for the CR2 service (like Elizabeth line stock).
      That being said the 4 planned Southern destinations could end with the same issues as the District line has, and one needs to ask the question does the likes of Hampton Court need 4tph service when even SWR say a 2tph service on the branch is sufficient. Shepperton again has a 2tph service with morning services run via Richmond given lack of capacity via Wimbledon because of longer distance trains needing the track.
      I'd argue the emphasis ought be on the Epsom branch.
      That being said I would argue that the current track would be insufficient to also incorporate CR2 services, with perhaps a longer tunnelled section being needed beyond Wimbledon.

    • @MrSmith1984
      @MrSmith1984 11 часов назад

      @paintedpilgrim
      In response to what you have said:
      *I would argue that more of the SWT Metro Lines should be incorporated into Crossrail 2; in other words the New Guildford Line to Guildford, the SWML Stopping Service to Woking and the Sutton and Mole Valley Line to Dorking. This would mean that 6 branch lines would operate in the SW London Region with 8-10tph each.
      I would also argue that additional branches to the North of London should be introduced to balance everything out, for example the Central Line Branch to Epping should be connected Crossrail 2 with a link from Angel Via Hackney Central, Stratford & Leytonstone while the New Southgate Branch should be extended to Welwyn Garden City.
      *I would argue that 14-Car (320 Meter) Class 345 style trains should be used. Mainly because it would provide additional capacity compared to 9-Car (205 Meters) or 11-Car (250 Meters) Trains.
      *If the Core Section of Crossrail 2 was 4-Track, having 3 Branches in NE London and 6 Branches in SW London wouldn't be too much of a problem.
      *You would need 6-8tph to run a proper turn up and go service, hence why the current frequency on the Hampton Court & Shepperton Branch Lines is inadequate. It's also represents a significant barrier to additional (& much needed) housing being built in those particular areas.
      *Finally; I would also agree that the Core Tunnel Section between Angel & Wimbledon should really be extended to Surbiton. This would mean that Underground Stations at Earlsfield, Raynes Park, New Malden & Berrylands would need to be built in the Core Tunnel Section to replace the existing stations on the SWML.

    See the problem with the underground is feeding everyone into the central area of the main city you have: the central, bakerloo, metropolitan, circle, hammersmith and city, district and parts of the Piccadilly and Victoria lines all running through the main city of london. Which means you dont have no branchlines to take the pressure off the main line routes to ease congestion. If you build tube lines with branch line capacity that’s capable of handling numerous trains it helps with breathing room on the main routes in the city. The second reason that underground is so congested with commuters is every single line runs through the same city with most of the lines terminating in the city or just on the outskirts of the city. if you create lines that runs from suburb to suburb with parts of the running off a main route that helps ease the number of trains running on the other lines. For example the central line is so congested here’s an idea to solve it run a branch line from the main route of the central line in the city and run a branch line to south of London or the north. if you create that branch line off the central line into the south or north of london it’s solves more than just congestion on the central line but also eases congestion on other congested tube lines that have the same problem. The only tube lines the run north are: Metropolitan, Jubilee, Northern, and Bakerloo lines so you have only five tube lines that run either north east to east or north to south in terms of routes while all the other lines are basically running in the same direction east to west with those being: District, Circle, Hammersmith and City, Central, and Piccadilly lines you have to spread out the line of how many actually run into or through your city center

Would this aid the District - maybe - and help passengers from Richmond - sort of though they loose their Earls Court connections and notting hill gate is a pain of an interchange station. It's literally just taking that problem and transferring it to other lines. You rightfully point out that doing this to the Central would probably just make its ever-present and increasing crowding more of an issue, but the thing is their solution to that hinges on adding another branch to the Bakerloo. You know, the line that just had its Stanmore branch transferred to the Jubilee due to Baker Street becoming a choke point and the line becoming overcrowded as a result - doing something like what was proposed here would almost certainly lead to a very similar thing happening. (Also, wasn't the Stanmore branch originally transferred from the Metropolitan to the Bakerloo for that very same reason - the Met did not have the capacity for so many branches?)
    Branches in general on a very busy line seem to be best avoided due to the mathematical capacity limitations they can create; I don't think it's a coincidence that neither the Victoria nor Jubilee Lines have no branches, as they were planned out with that sort of thing in mind unlike the District.
    What they needed here was a line they could extend to take over a branch of the District without creating a branch on said line, like what was done with the Stanmore branch of the Bakerloo. Of course they also wanted a line that had spare capacity, and I'm pretty sure there wasn't a line that ticked both of those boxes - the Central ticked neither and the Bakerloo only ticked off the latter. The only way around this I can think of would have been an entirely new line - and I mean, we did get that but with all the usual trouble associated with such a thing. This definitely seems like an idea that was just doomed to fail and well, it did. Interesting all the same, though.
    Great video!

      The problem with the Bakerloo having two branches was that the branch point was at Baker Streeet, leaving one of its busiest stations - Paddington - served by only half the trains. Branching further out is less of a problem - two or more suburban branches feeding into one central trunk is quite a common pattern and has worked well on the Central (both ends) District and Met - and the Piccadilly until one branch was extended to Heathrow. On lines which don't branch, some trains terminate short - the Jubilee is an example, the east end of the District another..

    So many " lines " couldn't someone come up with a better word? I suppose with all the queues a line was the obvious choice Queue comes from " tail " In Latin. Central Tail?

    No new line can be built at the moment, because a new line would inevitably end up being called the Charles line, and we cannot inflict that on our descendants.

    Am I being an idiot but why didn't they think of a North West London Line running North-South? Yes, wouldn't go into Zone 1 but would stop people needing to go towards London to go away from London.

    The first 90 secs of your video completely debunks the repeated assertion that successive Tory govts were not investing in public transport infrastructure in the South East during that era...
