- The number of new and expectant mothers in England getting specialist support for mental health problems has almost doubled in the last three years, ITV News has learned.
Data from NHS England shows more than 57,000 women received treatment in the last year, that's up a third compared to the year before.
It can feel like “the end of the world” one woman who experienced postpartum psychosis told ITV News.
We’ve been given permission to film at the Ribblemere Mother and Baby Unit in Lancashire, a psychiatric ward where women are treated with their babies.

Shutting down children's centres have contributed towards this. Lack of family support as well and rise in childcare cost.
The pressure of breast feeding as well.
All of these things haven't existed for most of human history, we've had them for half a century, but apparently are now falling apart without them.
@thecornfieldiii2069 Aside from the children's centres, the pressure of motherhood and its potential mental health effects were kept behind closed doors. We are only removing the taboo as of late. It sounds like you don't believe that these poor women have anything actually wrong with them? My question is... Have you ever been sectioned before yourself? It takes a lot to end up in one of those wards... like thinking you are an inca princess type of a lot.
Our GPs just tell us to look at a website for MH issues. The whole social care system has broken down.
They Google Just like you can, have you noticed when you can get to see one off course,
Having a child is the most life-changing experience you can go through.. nothing at all can prepare you for it... you really need a support system as doing it alone is just impossible... the worlds changed so much... families and community would help raise children now women do it completely alone we're an isolationist society.. and the father if he's around has to work so women are alone.... this is the route of it believe me
100%
5-10% of women can experience post partum thyroiditis in the first six months following childbirth, yet it is NOT routinely tested. Initially the thyroid may be overactive and if not detected the thyroid may become damaged and then become underactive for life. Amongst other problems it can affect the mother's ability to produce milk and breastfeed. Symptoms can be mistaken for "baby blues", but can seriously affect a new mother's ability to cope due to difficulty in concentration, tiredness, anxiety, insomnia amongst other symptoms.
Yes my thyroid was over active with my first baby and now I’ve had a under active thyroid since
Women can also suffer delayed post partum depression, often a year after the baby is born.
Hope these mothers don’t need financial support. Sunak wont like that
Because we just don't give enough money to women already.
I remember a woman from my country off origin (Poland), who had post-birth psychosis. They didn’t allowed her to be with her child (even supervised), and she was constantly panicking that her child died…
The quality of food , the structure of society, pollution, toxins , so many things led to so many illnesses sadly😢
Rishi: but are they fit for work though? Pretty much sums up our country right now
Richie wants to stop their benefits.
Why anybody would have a child is beyond me, especially in a crumbling failing society like the UK
Tell that to muhamed
You do understand that's exactly what our controllers want? For western women to stop having children. And oh look....childbirth is falling drastically among the west! Children and families throughout history have been born in far worse societies than now. But it was a priority. Let me tell you as a woman. I'm 45, and I had exactly the same opinion. And now, I realise its one of the worst mistakes I ever made. When you hit your 40s and you re sitting in your home, on your own...on your phone. Sure, see friends occasionally, play out life...but most women's intrinsic reason for being here...is to give birth to children. Whether you believe that or not. Why do you think so many women with the same opinion decide in their 40s to adopt. Because they realise the importance of bearing children. Not just for themselves and their communities....but humanity.
It's in our nature that we want to have children
Birthrates are dropping worldwide. Because of the state of the world, patriarchy and the way a lot of men and society devalue women and mothers. China has gone from forcing people to stop at two children, to forcing women to have children, apparently.
@@susanplatt5331 birth rates are set to peak in 2050 with a global population of 10 billion estimated, so it’s only in certain countries
Having children later in life must be part of the issue. I would also link social media as part of the problem.
The best age to have children is late 20s early 30s. What age do you think women should have children
It's so essential that we handle this properly and respond to the need quickly, if we don't it will be our children and grandchildren who will pay the price. Incredible brave mums, thank you for sharing your stories.
Hyper vigilant mothering instinct can’t ignore what’s bubbling under the surface in relationships and wider society. Is it any surprise?
Mmm, I wonder what recent development could have crossed the blood brain barrier & caused mental issues🤔
The government should give some support for mum's and the baby because the cost of living goes up!
Sad things happening, I would suggest proper diet plan and continue physical exercises may help. In my culure usually as soon as you give birth you go to your parents home and stay there at least 1 to 2 months, some stays even 6 month and family will take care of your food and massaging with oil to new mum body and baby like that.
Nowadays we do not see often because of our lifestyle.
As I am Christain, the faith gave me courage and support in my tough times.
For the last 30 years pregnant women and new mums and those supporting them have been encouraged to be aware of their mental health and to look for the sighns of post natal depression and quite rightly too . Women are recognising symptoms and are seeking help .poor maternity mental health is being driven by the cost of living crisis, lack of affordable housing and child care and massively over stretched maternity care in the nhs. Midwives and health visitors are an amazing first line of support for mums ,if you dont get help at the right time things can rapidly escalate. I had my first child 30 years ago and my last 20 years ago, the difference in the levels of support between my first and last was shocking, then and i dred to think what new mums now receive. We are storing huge problems for our future if we dont sort this out now.
It's disgusting so much male pandering in the wards
My pregnancy was horrible psychosis was dreadful I also had then postnatal depression I eventually gave my son away I've met my son again last year he bares me no grudge
Thanks
I think it’s just best families chip together and put their money together for a good therapist to get these mums help instead of waiting for NHS to help,I know we should be able to get these services but if they aren’t there,it’s best to just crack on and wait til it’s too late?
So needed.
In the last 3 years? since the jibbyjabby?
Back in olds days we all just had to get on getting stronger and better .. now days so many label's available.its so sad how things have changed..i hope everyone in need gets the help they need.
Back in the old days people with mental health issues were locked away from society and mistreated, abused and forgotten.
So true, days when we had a lovely cal s ctor who knew their patients, without Google, the creation of a Psychosis society, glamourised Smoking a n movies, TV , pubs, it looks the government great revenue, until the consequences of Cancer is now the downfall for NHS
@@am5783yes they were, and many that came back from war,
@@am5783Now they are "cared for in the community" where the vulnerable among them get exploited and the dangerous wreak havoc on the streets with knives and swords.
@@sarahwagland1559 Those are normally people within gangs, not the mentally ill. The mental health sector is severely underfunded and as someone who slipped through the cracks when I needed help, It isn't perfect. But the mentally ill ARE vulnerable. They are more likely to be victims of violence than the perpetrators. When I worked in a community mental health team, almost all of my service users were vulnerable people who just needed help and support. Of course you will get people who's mental illnesses manifest in violent ways sometimes, and there are picu wards for this. Its unfortunate there aren't more beds available within psychiatric wards when people are a danger to themselves or others, but that isn't the mentally unwell person's fault; nor should you be attempting to demonise 1 in 4 adults and 1 In 10 children.
Everyone has mental health issues. Those who work, those that don't, new mums, old mums, those not mums. The system is broken for everyone. Things are so difficult for adults. If you do not have the financial means to have kids, do not. Loads of people are stable emotionally, financially etc then you bring a child into the world its going to be worse.
How any of these women are single mothers?
Look at what this bloody conservative has done.
Poor Cath, so sad.
As a mental health student nurse seeing these is just unacceptable.
Side effects from the clot jab!!
Go back to sleep, post natal depression has been around for centuries
@@TC8787-yq7og : First nine seconds of the clip- Number of women getting help "Has almost doubled
IN THE LAST THREE YEARS."
Mums instinctively know today we’ve a short time left here, and when vulnerable ie: pregnancy can leave you open to spiritual attack and this causes severe mental health problems anxiety and depression 😢
A short time left here? In what way?
I definitely felt like the Postpartum Psychosis episode I had last year was not just physical/medical from depletion post birth, but also an energetic attack from darker forces praying on your vulnerability. It was like being in a hyper vigilant state, and you pick up on other dimensional sensations, and others emotions. It’s overwhelming and that’s the end of the world feeling, fear and worry about the state of the world and other peoples darker intentions. It took me medical help initially, but I also needed to work myself on grounding and spiritual recovery after such a frightening and mind blowing experience. Faith in a higher good and myself. You have to stay strong as a mother but you can’t and shouldn’t do it alone.
What do u expect from women hating Tories and their policies
Why has this situation come about??
We're spending nearly 30% of our wages on leasure, double that of 50 years ago, we have brilliant laws protecting workers rights, one of the best health care systems globally, financial services to help those in need, the list goes on.
Where are you getting that nonsense from?
I’m currently experiencing this due to suffering from hypermesis. Serve vomiting, nausea, lost over 10kg within 2 months. I’m Constantly in hospital for IV fluid, anti sickness IV and vitamin. I never knew pregnancy was this hard! I was a happy bunny 🐰 have a good paying job. Till I got more sick! All these affected my mood completely, I reduced my working hrs and begun working from home full time. Still I was struggling!! So JonsTunes be kind! Pregnancy changes a lot in women! Until you experience it please don’t judge!
Even if that was true (which I bet it isn't) the perception is going to be a bit distorted if even simple kinds of leasure is getting more expensive while wages stay the same. Should anyone who isn't well off just goes off to exist in an empty vacum whenever they aren't doing work or domestic labour?
Strong and independent?
Women most affected...
Rich folks are doing fine.
More millionaires than ever. Capitalism is clearly working just fine.
Whats the problem?
Quit your moaning poor people.
Lets not change the status quo.
Just do not have kids i tell my sister that all the time she has schizophrenia. I know she will be in danger and her kid.
Is it due to the number of partners doing a runner when he realises hes stuck with a mental lazy lardarse .
So compassionate so empathetic you are what is so right in this world. Well done you. Xxx
Haha, possibly. Good point. Women are far too powerful these days to be doing housework and cooking and being good partners and good mums.
@uncleAwasRightvery true, so they get a load of vulgar tattoos to demonstrate their freedom to the world, and dabble in promiscuous sex (probably with their boss) because only obedient women are faithful to their families. Of course, when they end up with drinking problems, wracked with anxiety, and have unruly children, it is because of the patriarchy oppressing them. Girl power!!!
I blame those divs who go round saying "it's ok to not be ok" yeah it's all their fault
All this " new " should be send to Ukraine or Israel.
Will be no mental issues
The ignorance of some of these comments about post-birth psychosis is unbelievable!
Disgusting
What about Palestinian women who are loosing their babies from Isrealy bombs
activist alert - stop making it all about an issue unrelated to this video
Crazy people 😂
