Brad did a great job portraying Achilles' agility, flexibility, reflexes, and battle IQ. His backward spin to cut Hector's leg was such a great demonstration of all four. It's no wonder he was leagues above every warrior of his time. Hector really had no chance outside a lucky blow.
"you won't have eyes tonight, you won't have ears or a tongue, you will wander the underworld blind, deaf and dumb. And all the dead will know this is Hector, the fool who thought he killed Achilles." :)
Brad Pitt and Eric Bana did not use stunt doubles for their epic duel. They made a gentlemen's agreement to pay for every accidental hit; $50 for each light blow and $100 for each hard blow. Pitt ended up paying Bana $750, and Bana didn't owe Pitt anything.
Remember when most every action movie framed their fight scenes like this so the audience could actually understand what was going on? Nowadays most directors use shaky cam and close ups to create confusion and chaos during their fight scenes.

Both of them have good dialogue. Achilles: Now you know you're fighting! Hector: I thought it's you I was fighting yesterday and I wish it had been you but I gave the boy the honor he deserved... Achilles: you gave him the honor your sword!...
I loved Hector because: 1) He lasted any longer than any other opponent in the movie. 2) He managed to break Achille's spear. 3) He managed to cut Achille's armor. Edit: 4) Before Achilles finished him off. Hector looked him to the eyes.
Thats like saying i liked the giant in the first fight scene because: 1. He looked the scariest and grunted loudly. 2. He took out achillies shield with his spear getting thrown in it. 3. He managed to make achillies sweat before he killed him... 4. Before he killed him he managed not to get his own blood on his flip flops when stabbed..
@@Accept_Any_Bribe The Raid movies have good choreography, but they're only typical of the genre. Unremarkable, sometimes comedic, and entirely forgettable. Hector vs Achilles was actually thought through. Troy's fight scenes had ENORMOUS planning.
@@jadezzeddine7664 Achilles knew he'd die in the battle. His mother had told him that. That's why he came to Troy in the first place. Only after Hector's death and some talking with his father, he finally tried to help Troy.
I love how you can see the fight progressing like a chess game. Hector was very offensive from the start, hoping to catch Achilles with a lucky hit. Achilles on the other hand was VERY tactical. At the start he and Hector were simply sparing, testing each others fighting style. Achilles quickly figured out that Hector was going for attack more than defense, and used that knowledge to take him down. He stuck with a very defensive style, letting Hector tire himself out, repelling Hectors attacks and stopping to conserve energy while waiting for the next attack. At the same time, he kept using very unorthodox fighting moves to keep Hector guessing, all the while waiting for the right moment to strike. It was only a matter of time before Hector became too tired to fight skillfully, and resorted to rushing Achilles. That was the opening Achilles needed, and in one quick move he finished Hector off. Incredible scene, and one of my favorite duels in all of cinema!
Not sure what you're watching, at 1:08 the one charging was clearly Achilles. Hector only started becoming reckless after tripping and then Achilles went on the defensive.
The sound the swords make just after they’re drawn and during the first few blows is some brilliant sound design - it adds so much to the scene and is so weirdly satisfying.
Since Achilles really had no reason to worry about getting hurt in this fight, I think the only reason he fought with his shield over his head and back was so he could fight in the shade.
Yeah no, actually in this movie he isn’t immortal or invincible, he can get hurt, the director said it, this movie was a more realistic interpretation without any divine intervention, even Achilles said he wasn’t invincible in the beginning, he is just the best and more skilled warrior
I always liked the moment when Hector scratches Achilles’ armor and he looks down at it like “Damn! Nobody’s ever come that close before!” Also Hector was the only real good guy in this movie. He was fighting for his country and his family. Everyone else either caused the trouble (Paris) or were invaders (the Greeks).
That's the beauty of the Iliad and why it stands out so many centuries later. It's not a typical good vs evil story, it's greed and pettiness killing good men on both sides. It's what war is for real.
I think that shot, and then right after with the caught sword thrust, are both kind of indicating hits that would have been real if Achilles wasn't invulnerable
@@bipolarexpress9827 Did Achilles really "win"? Yeah, he won that fight, but tragically lost everything else. Achilles' lesson is sometimes when you win, you lose. Some people call it Karmic. Some people call it reaping what you sew. The so-called "winners" in life are usually extremely miserable and end up dead with an arrow in their heel by someone less deserving. I think what was missed by your comment is that Achilles was actually a "good guy" as well. Achilles was trying to avenge his cousin in a straight up fight and even gave Hector a chance when he tripped. That's what some would call sportsmanship. That's what makes this scene, cool as it is, also tragic. Two good men turned against each other by circumstance, or in this case, the dishonor of Hector's brother. If anyone deserved a spear and a sword in his chest, it was Hector's brother, Paris. But we all know that guy's a coward who'd rather watch his country die than go and face the music for what he'd done. That's the lesson. Hector died because he let someone like his brother be a dishonorable swine. If you let that go unchecked, you'll get a spear, a sword, and then your corpse dragged through the desert through no fault of your own. That's where Hector was the bad guy. He should've cut his brother's nuts off and returned Helen. Roll credits.
Hector is one of the greatest heroes in history. Courage, loyalty, honor, love for country and family, respect for opponents ... A lion who, even though he knows he is doomed in a duel against a demigod, does not hesitate to fight. Really mythical!
Buddy do you have any idea what Hector was "actually" like in Homer's Iliad? He was the most hateful man, disrespected Ajax and spat on him upon his death, mocked him as he was drawing his last breath and when Achilles went looking for him, he was scared to death, hiding. Hector was definitely no hero. Im with you on this Hector though, Eric Bana did a great job in the movie and the movie - Hector was indeed lovable :)
That move where Hector breaks Achilles' spear with his leg and goes for the throat with his sword would have been a sure killing blow to any other man.
Also when he goes for achilles leg and achilles just casually dodging. Any other man would’ve got their leg chopped off. This just shows achilles inhuman reflexes

@@JacobFury What are you talking about? In the battle literally 1 day before in the movie, both sides dispersed and stopped fighting for the day because "Achilles" - aka. Patroclus - died by Hector's hand. The whole of Troy and all the Greek armies were aware that Achilles's last living relative was killed and would seek retribution for it. That's why Hector accepted the 1v1 when Achilles was screaming his name. Because he can fight his own battles (this is literally the theme of the movie). If anything, having a wall of archers fire after Achilles won would be the most dishonorable thing Priam/Troy could have done - even after tying the corpse to the chariot. It would have given Greece even more justification to go to war (and it wouldn't have killed Achilles anyway - let's be honest). Neither Greece or Troy could justifiably intervene. Anyway, you really need to re-watch it or something. Achilles not accepting Hector's pact (i.e. request) was not dishonorable.

Not to mention when Hector sliced at him at 2:30 or so, Achilles' armor had a scratch on it which could've been his actual flesh had he gone without armor.
wilji1090 yeah that is true i just wish armor actually worked in these movies and tv shows game of thrones had one example of it serving its real purpose but most other times it seems like armor is just for looks and never stops anything
I've always likened it to someone knowing where the weak points are in armor. Granted, chainmail is always going to be flimsier than platemail, yet Kingdom of Heaven has a scene where Bailan took a sword blow to the arm and were it not for the chainmail, he would've lost his arm in the battle.

He was pissed cuz Hector killed his family. Would you make a deal with someone who had just killed one of your kin? I do not think so. Kinda like Green Berets and Enlisted soldiers, both warriors, but different classes.
@@johnnyb8110 I mean if you're afraid of your family member getting killed, then why did he come to war. It was his cousin's mistake. What would Hector do ?
I appreciate the choreography of this scene more and more over the years. Achilles is always graceful and avoids/blocks with ease. Hector fends Achilles off but his blocks and parries are clumsier
It wasn't enough to kill the man in front if his kingdom, including the brother, dad AND wife. You had to drag the man's body off the battlefield. The disrespect.
what enraged achilles is that he knew the boy had no chance against hector,no chance at all, this is a dynamic fight, with swords someone of both could die from bleeding out,old weapons are terrible weapons, guns are so impersonable
In the actual Iliad, after Hector killed Patroclus, he stripped Achilles' armor off, and wore it when he fought against Achilles. Then, after Hector ran away from Achilles for three days and sacrificing a large portion of the Trojan army because they got in between the two, Athena had to trick Hector into actually standing his ground, and the bitch died in one hit. So, Achilles dragging his dumb ass around for what he did is fair.
This is how you choreograph and film good action scenes. It's beautiful in the movements, it's meaningful in the story, it is tragic and gives emotional conflict because both characters have understandable reasoning to be there, it gives short breaks to process what's going on, it shows the emotional consequences in the faces of everyone involved.
No bro, in the Iliad Patroclus was a true hero, in fact he was slightly older than Achilles as opposed how it was portrayed in the movie. Patroclus was Achilles' mentor guiding the young warrior done the right path. He was a skilled warrior who killed numerous Trojans and slew Sarpedon a son of Zeus in book 16 of the Iliad. Hector and Patroclus encounter in the poem, and Hector was only able to kill him due to intervention of Apollo and Euphorbus( A Trojan warrior), and he knew who Patroclus was when he slew him? Patroclus was forced to intervene and wear Achilles' Armour in the Trojan war because Achilles was not willing to participate anymore, the man was just sitting in his tent.
I agree. Even when one understands the aspects behind this time period in History, the possibility that all these events occurred as a result of Paris' inability to keep his carnal urges under control can irritate most individuals.
***** i have a little brother so i understand Hector wanting to protect him but his little brother's actions went over the line. Paris was taking advantage of hector, every time he was in danger he turned to hector. He just really got the shit end of the stick.
AfroMalaya I wouldn't say he was covering for him. He was against his actions the entire time. With so many people looking up to hector he couldn't just turn his back on his brother. Those people in Troy were a tight knit group so morally he was obligated to bail his little brother out of all the stupid things he did
The choreography of this movie is so cool. It's obviously not realistic, but they truly capture the essence of Achilles's invulnerability with his every move. The confidence, relaxed aggression, and even the power of every strike. The dude looks like an absolute tank during 1:171:58 and 2:17 when he strikes.
JustCallMeArabella Well, If Chronos didn't do that he wouldn't have died and Zeus couldn't have organized the mariage between Peleus and Thetis since he wouldn't have had that much power.
While not immortal, Achilles probably mythologically something akin to a "Captain America." Peak human everything with virtually limitless stamina. Hector as this fight was depicted was not only outmatched in skill, though he fought well enough to keep up for most of it, but he eventually got tired while Achilles was just as fresh as he was before the fight started. Nice to see spears incorporated into a one on one battle this way in a movie.
I disagree. He actually landed a strike on his armor. The way Achilles stares at the mark, it was the tiniest shred of doubt coming over him. He also seemed to enjoy having a legitimate challenge. Achilles killed that monster of a man in the opening scene in one move like nothing. Achilles actually had to try with hector. He was even breathing heavy near the end.

Incredible scene, and one of my favorite duels in all of cinema!
idk man, looks to me Achilles was the one who went on total offense from the start, Hector just couldn't defend against him.
Đức Đặng Tấn Every single bout was started by Hector charging...
Not sure what you're watching, at 1:08 the one charging was clearly Achilles. Hector only started becoming reckless after tripping and then Achilles went on the defensive.
Đức Đặng Tấn That initial charge by Achilles was to test Hector's fighting style. Hector charges far more in this fight than Achilles...
+Modern Spartan not just the initial charge, up until Hector's spear was broken Achilles was clearly on the offensive

Also Hector was the only real good guy in this movie. He was fighting for his country and his family. Everyone else either caused the trouble (Paris) or were invaders (the Greeks).
Well the good guys don’t usually win in life. They’re not prepared to do whatever it takes to win.
That's the beauty of the Iliad and why it stands out so many centuries later.
It's not a typical good vs evil story, it's greed and pettiness killing good men on both sides. It's what war is for real.
You mean, everyone was either defending the home of Illia (Troy), or they were trying to rescue the queen of Sparta from her kidnappers.

What are you talking about?
"Get up, Prince of Troy. Get up! I won't let a stone take my glory!" Hector is the only one to give Achilles a true challenge. Even had him breathing hard. He may have paraded Hector's corpse, but he respected the fuck out of his skills.

Good people don't always win. Smarter people win. Game of Thrones taught me this.
“I won’t let a stone take my glory.” Too much warrior this Achilles is.
I hated Hector had to die. That whole war was because of his Paris. And even when he tried to man up and fight he still bitched out.
T Stark
Understood T Stark.
Hector was covering his bro. That is what happens when you cover up bad shit. You get spewed in it too
AfroMalaya I wouldn't say he was covering for him. He was against his actions the entire time. With so many people looking up to hector he couldn't just turn his back on his brother. Those people in Troy were a tight knit group so morally he was obligated to bail his little brother out of all the stupid things he did
Brad Pitt is so freaking good in this movie. Well, almost in every movie.
That THUG LIFE face he gave them in the end...
😂
I was wondering the same xD
I am muscular than you
The choreography of this movie is so cool. It's obviously not realistic, but they truly capture the essence of Achilles's invulnerability with his every move. The confidence, relaxed aggression, and even the power of every strike. The dude looks like an absolute tank during 1:17 1:58 and 2:17 when he strikes.
THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT, PARIS!
It's actually Aphrodite's fault. She gave Paris, Helen( the most beautiful woman in the world)
Livid Wolf If we're going by that logic, then it's Zeus' fault since he orchestrated the marriage between Peleus and Thetis
JustCallMeArabella if we're going by that logic, it's Cronos' fault since he ate the muthafunckin gods
Victor Paringaux How does that relate to the Trojan War, though? Lol
JustCallMeArabella Well, If Chronos didn't do that he wouldn't have died and Zeus couldn't have organized the mariage between Peleus and Thetis since he wouldn't have had that much power.
i never get sick of this movie. i feel like my obsession with it has to be a disorder on it's own. i've watched it so many times.
They're all watching like "Yeah, he has no chance."
lmao
+Stephen Coakley She literally looked away about half way in. It's like being too embarrassed for a friend to watch
+Bryan Frank actual fight lasted more than 2 hours
Kevin Li you're fun at parties
+Kevin Li actually Achilles took down with a shot of his spear
Got to say this is one of the few movies that I really enjoy watching, this fight scene was awesome
This movie is underrated. I don't get the hate at all. Its like people were just mad it wasn't as good as Braveheart/Gladiator.
Hate? I’ve never seen hate for this movie? Was it hated upon release?
Hated because it was so good people wanted more and we didn’t get more of brad Pitt and Achilles
I thought this movie was killer!
Best history epic of all time
Wasn’t as good? This is way better lmao
2:50
Lord Commander on The Wall... as always...
+myfavoritescenes nothing's changed
+myfavoritescenes For the watch!!
myfavoritescenes LMFAO
For the watch!!!
For the Watch.......
If you ignore the fact this movie came after Lord of the Rings, this aged really well.
my two favourite films (well 4 technically)
@Romanogers4ever Love how whenever Lord of the Rings is mentioned, people like you have to crawl out of the woods, to start bashing Game of Thrones.
"get up prince of Troy, get up.. I won't let a stone take my glory"
Achilles us basically toying with him the whole fight, Real Bad Ass
Actually in the book Hector was the only mortal to give Achilles an even fight. The only reason Achilles won is because he's Demigod...
@@stephengrigg5988 later he admits to his father, King Priam that Hector was the best he'd ever fought. So i completely agree, when Hector left a mark on Achilles' armour it surprised the Greek hero, he'd never been challenged quite as much as this. Same with his heavy breathing towards the end too
@@stephengrigg5988 he also wasn't so arrogant in his fight he knew what a fighter hector is and it be best to the fighting do the talking
@@nihaalsandim9986 completely agree. He was very vengeful in this fight because of his cousin's death but he did give hector credit for his skills later.
This fight was heartbreaking to watch. You see a good man die to a unlikeable demigod with no personality and humility. But that aside both eric and brad performed really well in the movie.
Everyone loved acheilles
@@steaksauce_4172 no
@@steaksauce_4172 everyone? 🤔I don’t think so
@@hellman20010 I'm sure the wife's and kids of the fallen hated him but Achilles was a beloved figure.
Achillies is far better and more honourable, he was the best and carried the whole movie
"There are no pacts between Lions and Men."
Real talk....Brad Pitt killed this joint
in the actual iliad he says something along the lines of... "There are no pacts between lions and men.. I would rather eat your flesh" in reference to accepting hectors pact about the proper burials
This is Achilles in his total badass mode.
Joshua Davies Nah, he was a fair man. A warrior. In war you kill your enemies.
bad ass? he proved himself nothing more than a base animal.
+Exposer O' Fraud that WAS Achilles.
Andrew in war, you either kill, or be killed.
Star-Lord The Legendary Outlaw Yeah but if your opponent is dead you pay him respect if he fought bravely, do you know what Achilles did after this scene ?
The look he gave them as he road off dragging dude was just savage...
Right? Like...
"Sure does smell like bitch right now..."
