It's more Christian passive aggressiveness. It's the unsaid stuff.
It's like when a Southerner says "bless your heart."
They _really_ mean "what a moron," or "f%&k you," depending on context.
This is why I struggle to have Christian friends. If you're so progressive that you have to ignore 80% of the book, just drop the myth, all together. Especially, considering they'd believe in Santa, instead, had their parents just lied and said "no... Santa _is_ real, you just don't get presents because you're naughty."

Almost like their own moral code comes from something other than the Bible.

    • @altrag
      @altrag Год назад

Its a form of binary thinking. They (the fundy nutter types, not all Christians by any means) believe that you're either a follower of God's word, or a follower of Satan. The idea that people don't believe _at all_ is not something they understand.
Also note their unusual usage of the concept of "belief". As Emma pointed out, they absolutely believe in Satan - its God's enemy and (presumably) they don't think God is just hallucinating up there and striking out at mirages.
They're just using language in a stupid way. When they accuse you of "believing" in Satan, what they mean is that you're a follower of Satan's word. Again, the idea that you don't believe at all (the dictionary definition of the word this time) is not something that even crosses their mind.
They simply can't comprehend such a thing. Its why a lot of them have an easier time dealing with Muslims or Hindus or any other religion than they do dealing with atheists. They might disagree with (to the point of hating) those other religions, but they understand the concept behind them. They don't understand atheism at all.

If God didn't want you to kill people, he probably shouldn't have made them mortal. "death is the wage of sin" innit, so why is that immoral? Also why does God care if you steal? God made everything and he made it for us. He can just make more stuff. Ok, so maybe he won't get rid of death and sin because we choose that with our free will, but the Bible doesn't ever say anywhere that he can't just make more stuff. Jesus did it multiple times. Hm. Don't steal is coincidentially a moral law that makes a lot more sense for a human society that values thier stuff, than it does for an all powerful and eternal being.

    • @altrag
      @altrag Год назад +19

@@JebeckyGranjola Christianity (and all religions really, but lets keep it focused) is regularly inconsistent like that.
The one that always gets me is they tell you its good to be "God-fearing" while also telling you that God is eternal love and forgiveness. Why the hell should I fear that?
It really boils down to them picking and choosing which parts of the Bible they want to agree with and which to ignore. Want to scare someone into doing your bidding? Just ignore all of Christ's teachings (you know, the namesake of your religion) and preach the old testament at them. Want to make yourself feel better about that shitty thing you did? Pull out the new testament and ask Jesus for forgiveness. I'm sure God won't have any problems with that kind of selfish interpretation of His word!

Thankfully those ex-brother/sisters don't speak for the rest of us.
Weird how the folks most invested in Biblical literalism are always the first to assume that there was some 'mistake' in how lgbtq+ people (not to mention people from other religions or, often, races...) are made. Seem to have a particularly narrow understanding of "God's image" if they can't fit you into it, if anyone were to ask me...
For all the many, many real issues there were with the politics and administration of the Roman Catholic Church back in the day; the Protestant Revolution's opening up the interpretation of the Bible to folks who both were *_super_* dependent on their local funding sources and had *_no_* idea how full of analogy the Early-Christian writers and the sections of Judaic texts included in the Bible are brought more problems than it solved.
Either way, God Bless, Hail Satan, and keep yourself hydrated!

Perhaps seek out your brothers and sisters (and others) in the Unitarians? I don't know where you are but in the UK :
The General Assembly passed a resolution in support of transgender people’s rights. The resolution states that Unitarians “affirm with joy that each person’s understanding and statement of their own gender identity is a matter of conscience” and “affirm that transgender rights are human rights.” Further, that the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches “joins the British Medical Association, the Trades Union Congress and others in civil society in urging the adoption of a self-declaration model for gender recognition by the UK and devolved governments” and “requests that the Chief Officer lobby for this model in response to UK or devolved government consultations and on any other suitable occasion.”
      The Quakers are also welcoming:
At our Yearly Meeting in August 2021, Quakers in Britain recorded:
"We seek to provide places of worship and community that are welcoming and supportive to trans and non-binary people who want to be among us. Belonging is more than fitting in.
With glad hearts we acknowledge and affirm the trans and gender diverse Friends in our Quaker communities, and express appreciation for the contribution and gifts that they bring to our meetings, which are communities made up of people with a diverse range of gender expressions. The end of our travelling is for differences not to divide us. We rejoice in recognising God's creation in one another. This is what love requires of us."

I've kind of wanted to be part of a cult or weird religion at points in my life when my anxiety was at its worst. My moral compass was very confused at that point, but in the sense that I thought everything I did was wrong - not right.
Luckily, I had enough common sense left to not join some cult, but it did seem like an appealing option to just give away my free will to someone else xD

You can have morals without religion. Religion cannot survive without followers. The Catholic Church is dying out and they know it. People are fed up.

My neighbour is a flat earther. I find it fascinating. He and the wife are both into this. I just moved, so I don't know them so well. But in the few conversations we had, with just a few logical questions about horizon line, gps, flight images from space he fell back on deception by the higher power. Honestly, I find these guys fascinating. In the same way one is fascinated when seen some weird form of life and thinking 'that shouldn't be alive', like rishi sunak, for example.

Yeah i know some fine folk that fall for this nonsense, its strange.
That arguement of round earth being "a deception of the higher power" always confuses me most,
if there is this group of evil men at a table decieving us into "globeism", WHY? Nobody would benefit from that

I had a family live next door that was 'on the fence' about flat earth. They were nearly taken in by the foolishess posted online. One night, I took out my telescope and pointed it at the moon. One look through that bad boy and the mom said "Well, the moon is round, I can see it with my own eyes...which means the earth is prolly round too."
They ended up jumping on board the Qanon train instead....I would have preferred them to be flat earthers.

Dear Emma, I watch your shows with delight, I'm 67 years old (next week my pension starts) and I witnessed the birth of the home computer, starting with Vic-20 and commodore-64. I never realized how many dumb people lived on this planet untill the internet appeared. Honestly you can deliver them proof and they'll just say "I don't believe you".
I once told someone, looking at the stars, maybe one of these stars exploded thousends of years ago and isn't there anymore. He said to me "I can see it so it is there". Now, not understanding the speed of light I can understand but if they ask for proof that the earth is a sphere and show them a photo they will say it is fake.(most used word in the last years). Please don't stop you are one of the people that make youtube fun to watch.

The fact that he went on a mini-rant about Emma's popularity on youtube sorta makes me wonder if the real impetus for him making his video was being super jelly that his channel isn't more popular... with no awareness at all that his video does a good job showcasing two of his biggest barriers (outside of content): a lack of technological competency and just repeating things over and over instead of doing any editing (be it digital editing or even just manually editing himself to stop talking).

    A couple random comments:
    1. Your facial expressions and body language while he was starting in on the flat earth nonsense were awesome.
    2. I had an inflatable globe growing up. The pictures of you holding them were the first instance where I saw anyone else with one of them. Cool
    3. I'm with you on the whole "taking video of a computer screen" comment.

Your intro about being called out for being a "satanist" reminded me of a mock interview with Spinal Tap (not part of the This Is Spinal Tap movie, maybe an SNL appearance?) where they were asked about being satanists and they acted outraged because their relationship with Satan is personal and a matter of individual faith and, unlike other rock bands that they could name, they weren't satanists just to be "popular" or to appeal to their fans. Rock on!
