    I had a two spokes break in Japan in a holiday ride. I was very frustrated as I had Tannus tyres on the bike. I could not simply remove them and put new spokes in. I had to do a very rough fix by creating a custom spokes with the help of a local bike shop near the hotel. Thankfully I speak some Japanese so I was able to (with lots of mistakes), get the help I required. I created two spokes that were slightly too long. Inserted them into the wheel hub, and then with some swearing and effort, managed to get them to attach to the threaded nut at the rim end. I was then able to carefully wind them up enough to make the wheel safe enough to ride without fear of a buckle occurring. A very dodgy fix - but good enough that by the end of the holiday I'd almost forgotten it had occurred. Morale of the story - solid tyres are great but..............pray you do not snap a spoke or two on the first day of a holiday ride.

      Great to have you share the story here Brad... I had some bad experience with the Tannus tires as well, they were just so hard to remove without having the damage them. Good to hear you complete your trip.

    In the case of Brompton’s 16in rear wheel the spokes are cross laced as any other rear wheel. It’s impossible to get a tension meter to work here in a 16in which would definitely help when building the wheel. We are forced to accept the pluck sound method which works but subjective and MAY cause a problem down the road. Maybe someday a tension meter will be made to fit until then we must continue with the pluck method. Front wheel is radial and a tension meter can be used. Obviously, I fall on the side that a 16in wheel can fall out of tension just as easy as a larger wheel. This said, I love my Brompton and actually wouldn’t mind if this happened to me - I get to fix it. There is just as much joy in riding my Brompton as much as keeping it fine tuned.

    Hello Petrelli! Thank you for always trying to generate original content with respect to other channels, and for your good way of spreading these topics. I ask you: Do you have experience with those Kevlar spokes that are used to replace broken spokes, in emergencies? Would you recommend bringing one just in case? Thank you!

      Hello Martin, thanks for sitting around with me on the video and the great questions. I have to admit that I am very much into this kind of fixing things videos. I know they are not the best type of getting attraction videos, but it is something that I like to do. Anyway, the Kevlar spokes is something that I only heard of before, I never had it (or them if I am that unlucky) on my bike before. I always have a few spare spokes if I am heading to any tours, so I believe I am very much being looking after. Of course, our Brompton recue bag can also entertain with more safely measurements. I don't see why we can't have one at the it. Now you got me interested in getting one to have it test out.

    For a 6-speed B, there are only 2 types of spokes to keep spares, is that the case? I thought of buying these spokes and carry 2 or 3 pcs when I ride overseas.

    Is your hub SRF5 (W) and is it robust compared to standard 3 speed SA on M3L? I am also thinking of changing it to 5 speed. Thanks in advance.

    • @Petrellionwheels
      @Petrellionwheels  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the message. My hub is a SRF5(w) and it had been working fine for me all these years. The only thing that I want to let you know ahead of your change is that the gear setting has to be dead right. The shifting cable pulling isn't as forgiving as the 3 speed hub, you have to be very dead on on the settings.
      I hope I had answered you.
      Have a blasting day ahead.

    I have both 3 speed and 6 speed Bromptons but I prefer the simple design of 3 speed with one cog because you have perfect chain line all the time. With 6 speed, you will notice a slight noise coming from the drivetrain when riding hard. I believe this is probably due to chain line not perfect. Is my comment accurate?

    • @Petrellionwheels
      @Petrellionwheels  3 года назад

      Thanks for watching the vid and dropping a message here. I believe the drivechain system were built to accept the chain being abit off from the dead center. Just think you those road and mountain bikes where they have 12 or even 13 speeds on them, the chain do swing from left to right for a great bit of distance. So the little 2 speed externally at the Brompton wouldn't be that bad. Most of the time when you get sound from the chain is because the chain wasn't feed dead on from the tensioner wheels. If the tensioner wheel was a little bit off from feeding to the sprocket, the chain would have more unnecessary rub against the sprocket or to say not landing well on it. One of the way to "fix" this is by adjusting where is tensioner wheels are landing to make sure the chain was feed dead on to the sprocket.
      I love a clean system, that's why I used an internal 5 speed to keep the gear's cable to just 1.
      I hope I had answered you.
