YBT had the support of the prominent rap group Public Enemy and their producer Hank Shocklee signed them as the first act of his label Sound of Urban Listeners (SOUL). Despite their name, none of the group's members were black. They intended their name as a tribute to the black culture they were influenced by, but some thought their name was offensive or ridiculous.
There was a story that Busta Rhymes once told where his group and this group are both competing for contracts on Hank Shockley’s label. Part of the competition was who would get what name. The winner of the competition was Busta’s group and they decided to take the Leaders of the New School name. The other group got the other name.
