They can't monetize this game with microtransactions like they do with newer titles. Even if this game sold really well, it's still just a one-time purchase. In contrast, with a new COD title, they can make money not just from the initial purchase, but also from the Battle Pass, skins, and other microtransactions. They end up making way more money per player through monetization. And even if some players don't spend anything on microtransactions or the Battle Pass, there's always someone who will drop $50 on a new bundle or collab they like, which balances out the players who spend nothing.

An official MW2 MP remaster did actually exist, they just decided to vault it and only release the campaign. There are text string references to a real h2mp executable and using h2mod for MW2CR, you can see it by using a command to attempt to load multiplayer, in an error message.
MW2 MP Remastered already exists, to some level of completion, they just aren’t and probably never will announce or release it.
When the community wants it, they ignored them, when the community makes it, suddenly they take interest and want to strike the mod down. Why?
At least the mod is out there thanks to the early access players still having the files, but it’ll forever be unfinished. They were actually going to revamp the lighting to look much better and closer to the original game.
And people will preorder BO6, without even having played the game, specifically to get access to the beta (demo) for a game that likely won’t be that good. I doubt tanking their sales will make them take back this move, they have more money than they know what to do with, but maybe people thinking about buying BO6 should reconsider.

The only option I could think of to make everyone happy is make a "Classic Cod" Mode like Warzone but with no skins or fancy camos, kinda like "The Master Chief Collection" but attached like Warzone.

Thank you for highlighting the use of assets from other games. I know it's easy to just be grumpy about Activision shutting it down, but these kinds of mods aren't gray-area issues; they are blatant illegal distributions of copyrighted materials. There's zero chance they would have ever let this slide because they simply cannot allow that kind of precedent to be set for their IP. That's just basic business. The mod _maybe_ would have had a chance if it required legit copies of MWR/MW2/MW2R in order to legally access all of the necessary assets, but now we'll never know (they very easily could have shut it down anyway even if they didn't have legal justification, but at that point, what are you going to do? Fight Activision's legal team?)
I completely agree that Acti is a shady, greedy, anti-fan corporation, but we as a community need to stop acting surprised/hurt when these things happen. A note to any aspiring modders out there: You _have to_ play by the rules in order for there to be any chance at all of these things launching and surviving in the wild, _especially_ when dealing with notoriously stingy publishers like Activision and Nintendo. This has happened a million times across the industry, and it's always heartbreaking to see all that hard work and passion go down the drain at the last second.

From a fan standpoint, it's clear that greed is the real reason. The argument of "they have to protect their copyright or risk losing it" is bullshit and simply not true. Publishers like Bethesda, CDPR, Capcom, etc would be screwed if that was the case. Look at Fallout 4 as the best, most recent example. A MASSIVE mod called Fallout London ust released for the game, you have to own a version of Fallout 4 to play it, but it's entirely a new game, similar to needing MWR to play this H2M mod. Bethesda is risking losing their copyright portections by allowing Fallout London to exist, and in fact it only benefits Bethesda because they are making bank off a 10 year old game while doing absolutely nothing.

The most plausible reason is that it was taking away hype from blops 6. It was a game that many people were going to buy. But most importantly, they kniw it is far more fun then anything they have released in 5 years combined.
They did this to be assholes Ace. Thats the most plausible reason.
I dont trust them to release this themselves. They will fuk with the matchmaking. They will add in mtx. They will manipulate the shit out of the experience as much as possible just like they do with their current, modern, "cod 2.0" titles.
After this, im done with this company. Its clear they just dont want me or people like me as customers. They know i dont buy bundles. They know i dont buy the battlepass. They know i have only even seen the shop by accidental button presses. This was the only way they were going to get a dollar out of players like me, and instead of just taking the free money for no work, they told me and everyone like me to go F myself

As if old players would be any interested in the new installment. The target demographic for H2 were the OG players, such players would not have any interest in BO6 had H2 been cancelled or was it still here. They simply have no interest in that cash-grab. To say that H2 would have a negative influence on BO6 is rather laughable considering its targeted audience would not come near it either way.

@@mazin_iq1499 I did say it. Because it's true.

Allowing anyone, let alone thousands of players go back to what is widely considered the best release of the franchise, where there is no background fuckery, no mtx, would reflect very poorly in the modern product. It would expose it for what it is. A manipulation tactic, disguised as a game built to funnel as many people as possible to the shop and mtx. It's quite literally the only thing they give a shit about

You said it right there. Whats really insulting to Activision's end is as of right now, as a Halo fan first and foremost... our MCC is effectively dead. I also doubt anything remastered or remixed would come from BF either. No more support. It's botted/hacked to trash. It's so close to being considered shovelware save for offline campaign depending on how bad the hacks get. Activision can definitely hop in and say "you know what... heres the entire Black Ops storyline, remastered, ready to rock in one package with all the zombies goodness you want". Considering their track record for microtransactions, it wouldnt be as egregious to how Microsoft/343 recived flak for their implementation for MCC either.
Gladly would hop on that fast.

I really can't see Activision doing an official release of MW2R, given MWIII this year already has all the old maps on it. If it was in the works, they wouldn't have used all the maps this year. In terms of reasons why they shut the mod down, it could be as simple as it's their intellectual property - regardless of whether the devs are making money off of it. You don't lose copyright for not actively defending it, but you will lose your trademark ie. the Call of Duty name and the property within it.

  • @DivineFrag

What I've seen with modern COD games is that bringing back old maps isn't as nostalgic as it should be, because of those downy mantling/sliding mechanics. Players who didn't grow up on 2009 to 2012 CODs aren't getting the experience we got back then. I'd be fine paying for some remasters as long as they aren't graphically excessive (meaning they'd require me to buy a new PC which is a no-go).

You don't understand, some random manager somewhere said that the overlap between players who play the newest titles and the players who'd stick around for this longer than a week (hint: that overlap doesn't exist lmao activision), would be significant enough to draw players away from the game that sells AI generated skins that people spend $20 dollars for every other week.
I don't even need to look at the data to know that their hypothesis is wrong, because I know their audience better than they do, *because I play with them*
