That was my thought at first. Like why is it doing so much work to pick up a single apple. But this is the beggining so future iterations of it will definitely do better.

Good question, it has to do with nomads and ever-changing geo politics. In a way its not surprising to enlist robotics into agriculture since their technology is know for being invasive, like the internet and not automation in farming, what more will these robots do out in the field in world of nano particles.
Why make them fly? You could do the same thing with robotic arms that can move much faster and use much less energy

To get to very high trees without a lot of infrastructure. Leverage on long arms means you have to have much heavier hearing than a small tethered drone.
Having grown up on a peach farm, this thing is amazing. The reason we got out of the peach farming business was the labor cost. Insurance is very high as well. Being on a ladder all day is very unsafe especially when carrying heavy buckets. Another thing is I am very colorblind and unable to effectively distinguish right fruit using vision. I could operate this machine regardless of my ability to see color. I love it!!!

i find it weird they have flying drones instead of some kind of robotic arm attached to the car. A telescopic arm that just aligns itself with the apple, extends to catch the fruit and then retracts to collect it sounds like a way simpler idea that would work for the kind of scenario that is depicted in the video. I wonder why they chose this very complicated design.
Because drones are extremely cheap and getting cheaper. The robotic arm is in the active process of development, but there's nothing close right now, even though it's likely to change in a few next years with generalized AI models.
exactly my idea, drones are not cheap compared to robotics arms, also arms require less maintenance. It's just a gimmick for sure to raise funds.

They have made a robotic machine in New Zealand to deal with the grape vines. Not having enough labour to do the work was behind this. Well, from the technology point of view very interesting and let's treat it as timid beginning as aviation at the beginning of last century. But as of today Mr. or Mrs. X, a experienced apple catcher will do it much much quicker and effective under different circumstances (weather, trees shapes and quality selection, to mention a few) and still, no necessity of energy loading, battery and electric parts garbage, fixing, just to mention a few). The discussion of pros and cons is long and multi thematic but to sum up I hope someday we will find the perfect harmony between humanity and technology but till there we have to face many extremes and bouncing before we find the right balance, I would say 30 years from now.

same complains in my country,they say there are no people for the fieldwork..but guess the truth?they dont pay enough to worth the effort and also its only for very few days of work and then no more money for the worker untill next time he is needed..so if you pay enough,you will definately find the worforce needed..i personally have worked in small fields of my grandfather for a summer,preparing the field with hoes(the hard way) because no machine can go at that steep cliff,and also harvesting later on that year..very hard work and definately not worth the pitifull money people offer..strangers ask for people,and willing to pay them 40 euros per day,not knowing for sure how many hours you will work each day,and imagine in the other hand being just a delivery guy earns you more each day(working 8 hours or even more if you want)specially with the tips it can get really good..so whose problem is it again?
They don't pay enough because consumers are unwilling to pay ridiculous prices for fruits and vegetables. You want apples to cost 50 cents, then the farms can only pay the laborers so much. But if you want the laborers to make good pay and and health care and benefits and all that, then prepare to pay like $5 for an apple.

And the slowness is a problem not only in terms of cost, if collecting the fruit is so slow they can miss the optimal moment of maduration. Because for the fruit collection season farmers hire more people and those days they work all day long.
