Sucha great demo! Really appreciate the visual comparison to see all the improvements they made. I wish all the remake these days had this much detail and quality improvements as this. Picking this up day 1!
I _don't_ want Chrono Trigger R. I think it's perfect the way it is. I would like a FF6R though, that would be really sick with the Magiteks and everything
I was 18 when I bought this JRPG for my ps1! It's my favorite franchise. Since then, I've played every version. and now my favorite game has a new remake for switch and it's amazing! How good it is to be alive to see this evolution!!
When the screenshots released i first thought that the backgrounds in the remake are 2D. But they are actually 3D and just look so good they could be 2D renders!
@@pedrovischi6208yup i chose to play the psp then buy it when its on sale i also think the ps1 has a charm thats unique.. imagine if they made new cutscenes 😢
Demo was great, though the run speed is a bit low for how much larger the areas are. Lack of camera movement keeps getting me, I move right stick expecting to see around town or a forest or whatever, forgetting it is essentially a pre-rendered environment, it is just rendered from a few angles as you move through.
Just wish the new style wasn't so zoomed IN. I love 2D sprites as much as anyone, but they look 100x better when they aren't SO pixelated, and they need a smaller aspect ratio or a farther camera for that reason. Having everything so zoomed in all the time makes the sprites janky for a lot more of the experience :/.
You said what I thought. The sprite like characters looked fine in the 32 bit game, but looked too pixelated and out of place on the current backdrop. They should have tried to reimage the characters to fit the rest of the environment. It's not a deal breaker, but it would have been nice to consider that.
I approve it all so far included getting rid of the Claude battle. It breaks the flow leaving it in since Rena see's the sacred forest as majestic and all that should give Claude the shine right before Rena's eyes. The only thing I'll miss is the animation from the PSP. I doubt it but maybe they can include them all as an extra on the remake? And I kinda liked the original font of the opening title screen where it says Star Ocean. It would be cool af if they include the other 2 on the game loop if it has one when you don't press the start button.
Man I didn't download the demo yet so I didn't see this intro before. The more I see of this game the more I am just absolutely shocked they went in this hard on a remake. Especially for a series that kind of died out with each game after 2 originally came out. Like the amount of effort put into this remake is what others should aspire to. I also hadn't played the PSP version with what looks like a restranslation. I always felt the text in the original PSX one was just so bad and it sort of ruined the whole story. So now I am also looking forward to seeing that retranslation since this obviously uses that.
I don't think the retranslation was recieved that well when it first came out. I suppose it's an overall improvement but it's also not very literal - it's quite obvious if you compare the text or play with Japanese audio, if you can understand it. That part's arguably a matter of style, but the other issue is that most items and skills have also been renamed, even when they had perfectly servicable English names in the original Japanese. Makes everything a little harder if you played the originals.
By the time the Second Evolution came out I had 1,000+ hours on the PSX version and Second Evolution will never look right to me. Star Ocean The Second Story on PC was the one I wanted the most for a port, ended up with a whole remake instead. Now to load up the demo, speed run to the caste then spend whatever of the 3 hours remaining cooking Eggs and Dairy so I can start the game rich when it launches. It's going to look pretty dumb when the game launches and I have 20+ hour in the demo...
Ima sucker for cutscenes i think i wouldve gave second story 10/10 with new cutscenes we done like they did with the portraits in first departure and make it look awesome. Ima sucker for cut scenes so psp version it is i get engaged to the story more
Lol, I do like hearing Claude say 'BURN!' instead of 'HAH!' but wondered if it would be too overwhelming in the last minute. I include a lot more in the Claude comparison.
This makes me miss the original...The demo honestly didn't give me the same feel. The sprites really looked out of place in the new environments to me, too. Maybe I'm just getting old...
I personally love this reboot so far, but I agree the sprite-like characters look out of place against the current backdrop. They put so much money into the project that they could have dropped a couple more pennies to update the character (playable) images, too. Just saying. By the by, I'm 55 and love these games. 😁
In my oppinion: i love the retro intro cinematic more in the older versions, they seem more logic. The anime cinematics on the psp are really nice compared to the other versions. But the 2023 version has the most beautiful world/area/zone. All in all after seeing this video, i would say the psp version is the best cause it has the retro cinematic and the anime cutscenes, even though the world doesnt look as beautiful as in the 2023 version.
This Star ocean version is okay to call it a remaster but not worth it to call it a remake! Dont know why they used the same character sprites. If they spent lot of time improving the world and terrain surely they wouldve done the same for the characters too. Then adding some small extra content and VAs but thats it. The first VAs was from the PSP and simply was imported to the newer game. Im a fan of the Star ocean second evolution but I just cant call this a remake.
Its def a remake, and they took a lot of stuff from the original 2 but added their own take. They really tried it seems... I think they tried different graphical choices but it did seem to be a choice to keep the original characters without any touch ups including smoothing( which most people prefer) and put them in a realistic but not too realstic world with lighting and shadows that affect the sprites. Also the gameplay just seems really refined in every way but the same. Regardless i still think we deserve the original on steam. Also it should be possible the modders could do some really cool stuff since its unity i assume?
@@bojangler9685 well i have a personal problem with game made with unity, not only it lags a lot in mid range hardware, you also cant customize a lot of thing in .ini files located in appdata that's provided by unreal engine published game
This is just the demo, kinda pointless to put a voice collection this early. It's very likely the final release will have it (not sure about that picture of Philia if that's what you're hoping for though)

You deserve a medal!! You damn right we need one!!
FF6 with this game or FF7R graphic would be :fire:
Agree 👍

this is a really well done comparison video!
Love how you did the comparisons. I can see the effort put into this video.
I'm glad you liked it! I'm always trying to put my all, no matter how minor it is.
This has some top notch anime voice acting going on in it. I definitely can’t wait for this game to come out.
Thanks for this awesome comparison video.
Im I only loving the ANIME CUTSCENE in SECOND EVOLUTION?... thats actually nostalgic somehow...
Exactly! Was nice to sometime put screen down and watch the anime
@@Tilkinobro no need to be rude cutscenes engage you more that scene look trash on the ps1 and new version lol lets be real

Same, I was thinking of emulati g the psp version, but then I heard this masterpiece is coming out, damn. The perfect gift for my birthday
thats nice they use the same voice file. feel nostalgic
I wish this approach would be standard. Releasing a great game after many years without any changes is disrespectful to players.
Voice Collection is missing :(
great video its a whole new game praticaly
It bothers me that the character portraits arent up at all times when the characters are talking on the new remake.
Noticed that too, kinda weird the art pops in and out during dialog
I hope they remake thousand arms like this !

Always was funny to me they tried to age up Rena in Second Evolution. Somebody on that localization team was a massive coward.
I kinda wish we were just getting a remaster of Second Evolution, like we did First Departure.
We're getting something better though.
@@DjKingMelona no cutscenes is crazy to me
Kinda miss the anime scene from PSP. Great vid.
Can we have the classic Minato Koio characters'?
You can view it as hi-res art in the character status screens but there wasn't a setting for scenes.
