- This was an incredibly busy week. I inventoried and reorganized the fridge freezer. I made beet pickles and mustard pickles. We made some great meals. It was great but I'm tired! ha.
Kings Hawaiian rolls...all day long!!
@@cindydaniel6125 LOL.
A suggestion...2 slider burgers per regular burger bun. And your canned jars looked so yummy! My momma always made pickled beets...😊
@@cindydaniel6125 Aww, thanks. They sure are pretty to look at.
Hi Melanie 🤗 That's a great idea! I need to do a freezer inventory as well. I always find something I forgot about!LOL Great catch on the cottage cheese price! WooHoo! I've always wanted to try those Hawaiian buns. Nice you can go kayaking with your neighbours. We live on near a channel that goes into a small kettle lake. We have a canoe but I would like to get a kayak at some point. I'm retiring very soon! September 9th is the big day! Yay! There's always room for more cheese!LOL Great job with all the canning too 😍
Retirement approaching is pretty exciting. Do you have any big retirement plans?
Congrats!😊
good day. I know you are frugal and if you don't already do this here is a frugal tip. When you do your beets...wash really well so that you can take the peels, grind them up and dehydrate them . Then do a second grind to powder. Add a spoonful to your smoothies for extra nutrients . The color in a blueberry smoothie is quite dramatic!
@@choward8444 OMG. What a great idea. Mine are gone now but I'll remember this.
I use the salad topper as a trail mix when I add a bag of peanuts and mm's. Much cheaper than getting it premixed and I have it for lunch with an apple. I get the big bag at Costco and it lasts almost a month for $11 then adding the the other costs I get it all for less than a $1/day.
@@cathyrogers9276 Awesome idea!
Lol. When in doubt put cheese on the bottom AND the top! Or that's what I'd do! 😜 I love watching your food videos!
@@frugallydelicious LOL. I'm a work in progress!
Brilliant!
Great video! I have a cat food storey similar to your cottage cheese! Went shopping Thursday, about 5 stores. Small bags of Iams UTI cat food were on sale at superstore for 13.99 and I had a 300 point $3 offer. So checked my receipt after checking out as always and seen a couple mistakes. Stopped at customer service. So I was charged 17.99 for the cat food and they missed a 50% off on English muffins. Cat food had lower price on shelf and it was also in flyer. He was kind and said well I’m giving you 10 off fir that. Lol so that’s the scanner price code being applied. Was great! With points my cat food was almost free! Lol I always check my receipts I see mistakes all the time, everywhere not just there. Meanwhile, I’m a canning machine and at 64 I’ve did and seen lots, what gramma did and learned maybe she shouldn’t have. Lol 😂 anyhow I belong to a safe canning group , I use a canning blog for safe recipes and NCHFP for safe canning guidelines. If you want more info just ask I won’t offer unsolicited advice. 😬 but one tip is to leave one inch of stem on your beets while cooking and just wash the root etc, keep them intact so they don’t bleed…don’t use the water they are cooked on to can. Which I noticed your recipe only has vinegar so you’re golden! I’m about to make Lady ashburnham pickles this week and a friend wants me to make her mustard pickles. Her veggies are cut up way smaller than yours. Lady ash is almost a relish also. So I’ve lots of chopping in my future. I’ll do beets when I find a sale …my goodness you got a bargain on yours!!! Pizza: well cheese on top I used to say, now I say keep your toppings less, and if you need certain toppings cooked more or crispy then put those on top of the cheese. Sometimes I do both too and bottom. I also par bake my homemade crust 5 minutes with nothing on it , then add my sauce etc. never had a soggy pizza since! Yeah Hawaiian buns are on at sobeys fir a dollar. My store was out of them. Cauliflower is 1.97 at giant tiger and they were out. In fact every big sale item I wanted was out at all stores. On a Thursday. First day of sales, well second for giant tiger. Sucks as I live out of town and only go in once every few weeks. I did find some deals though. I’m stocking up for winter so I just pivot and find something else. Long comment to a long video! Have a great week ! 😁edit: suttonsdaze on RUclips. Safe canning stuff, she’s great you’ll like her .
@deedream10 I like to follow safe Canning practices as well. ❤️
Yay, $10 off the cat food. Awesome! $1 buns is quite a crazy price! Everybody's getting great deals. Whoot
You must be a tetris queen to fit all that sh*t into your fridge freezer. It looked like we have the same type of bottom freezer, but yours HAS to be WAY larger than mine! hahaha There is no way I could fit all that into mine. Our "other" freezer is the size of a dorm fridge but is a upright that sits on a stand. I love it, but its FULL right now. lol
@qq1651 Plus 1/3 of the top is an ice cube container. Lol. I call it freezer tetris. Ha
Half way between lunch and supper - we call that Lupper
@boogieman2k1 Hahahahaha. We had company and I didnt know whether to make lunch or supper. We ate around 3. Happy Lupper!
@@adventuresingroceryland We call it Linner. lmao
I cleaned out my fridge yesterday and now I also have to do my freezer. Great job Melanie. ❤😊
@sandiedrew4086 It was a mess. When I am looking for something in the freezer, I tend to remove items onto the counter and then put everything back in. The handsome one tends to dig around moving bags, boxes and packages. Everything can get pretty jumbled.
I put cheese first, then toppings. Have a fun weekend!
@@barbaragilmer9731 I don't know why I randomly did it like that. I always top with cheese. Lol
The Hawaiian buns are on sale at Sobeys for $1.00 a pack if you need more
@@darleneprice6467 What??? No way!!
I’m going to get cucumbers tomorrow to make mustard pickles. I use my best friend’s nana’s recipe. We always pickle together, but she’s been very sick and can’t this year. We’ll both miss it. I’ll make some for her. Great haul this week and great that you got a freezer cleaned out. I have to do mine. Have a super weekend
@@darleneprice6467 Thanks, Darlene. Good luck with your pickles.
That pasta salad looks delicious. Yum! ❤😊
@@sandiedrew4086 It was really good. Nice light dressing.
Those mustard pickles look fantastic! I may be trying your recipe. Thanks for including it.
@elizabethpatterson2627 You're Welcome. It is a family recipe! So tried & true.
Great week mel. Lots of yummy food and clean out of the freezer. Beautiful view u have at your new house. We'll worth downsizing
@jodie19831 Thanks Jodie! I hope you have a good weekend!

I ❤️ potpie! I will try it with biscuits instead of pie crust.
I adore celery as well. What do you do with the dehydrated celery???
@@pennynickels5216 I'll use the dehydrated celery in future soups, spagetti sauce, casseroles...etc.
Cheese can anywhere on your pizza. You have a lot of food in the fridge freezer. Busy week for you. Well done. That large 4 lb meat roll...we had one of them too (not sure if salami or pepperoni) but we sliced ours before freezing into small packets for home made pizzas. Lasts a long long time.
How much are the zip lock baggies at Dollarama?
@kathryndockrey1477 Last time I bought freezer bags (not sandwich) they were $1.75. I'll have to check Dollarama for sandwich bags. I'm curious now.
I made mustard pickles for my dad, once. They turned out awful. My pickles are kind of hit and miss. My favourites are a zucchini/summer squash mix that I made into refrigerator pickles.
I dug out some despicably old things from my freezer. A few things got sent to the compost. I just can’t keep up with my garden harvest, in terms of freezer space. Good problem to have, I’m aware.
Great meals this week, Melanie! 💖 - Tania
@tenthousanddaysofgratitude I love how you described it. "Despicably old" HA! I try to stay moderately on top of it. I went in the freezer drawer this morning and I can tell the handsome one has been up to his usual tricks. I'll need to straighten up the veggies/bagged stuff.
The dill relish I made all those years ago. I was so excited about it and very proud. When it was so awful I took a bottle to my experienced in preserves colleague/friend. She said "Hmmmmmm. That's odd, the clear liquid all along the top. Can I see the recipe?" I showed it to her. She took one look and incredulously said to me, you didn't think that was an excessive amount of vinegar? That's the problem." It was my first relish. I had no idea the recipe was wonky. So disappointing. I tried to save it. I took it all out of the jars, recorded it with other stuff. I just couldn't save it. I was crushed. BUT I didn't give up!
I put the cheese on first and last, always. Because we put alit of toppings on our homemade pizzas. My Ontario stores haven't had the salad toppers yet, but I will c0ntinue looking.
@ArstyImogenSky I feel that if I hadn't added that little layer on top, thetoppings definitely would not have stayed in place.
Melanie, where did you go to eat? The food looked good and I love to try a good restaurant especially in the valley.
@@kathleenchambers6485 Lew Murphys Smoke & BBQ in New Minas. It happened to be rib night!
We always put an old plate and put a brick covered in a tea towel on top of the plate on top of the pickle mix with the pickling salt overnight. The weight ensures all the brine is off before cooking. I find it makes for a crunchier pickle.
@@leeanne8651 It sure does. Nobody likes a soft pickle! Lol.
@@adventuresingroceryland I find if all the brine isn’t off the pickle mix they are saltier, rubbery, and they don’t last long preserved.
@leeanne8651 A lot of recipes advise to add water and salt and "soak" the veggies. My salsa recipe of over a decade advises stir in the salt, let steep overnight then drain (pressing out excess moisture) and I've adopted that for all my recipes. It seems counter productive to soak in water to get out moisture. Lol.
@@adventuresingroceryland Yes. We use my grandmother’s recipes which are very old. I love the cauliflower pickles you made. They are a lot of work, but so worth it.
Hey, next time double check the weight on products as it could be different.
@@Rebecca-zp4gm McCain Diced Hashbrowns 800g 4.99 Sobeys

I'm sure I could get the McCain options cheaper somewhere other than Sobeys. If you can believe it, that was the only option at the Sobeys I was at. $4.99 or nothing! Good thing Walmart was just around the corner. I should do a price comparison video
do you make antipasti
@sisterdube6235 No. I've heard the name before but I'm not really sure exactly what it is. Can you give a description?
@@adventuresingroceryland Its delicious. Lots of veg including olives and mushrooms, a thickish tomato sauce, hot sauce and often includes tuna! Recipe on allrecipes calls it Antipasto. Bit more expensive to make but great for gifts especially in the Maritimes when the other preserves are still made in a lot of households.
@@marthascott9336 Interesting. How would you eat it? Or I guess the more accurate question is how is it served?
@@adventuresingroceryland I would eat it out of the jar!! lol. It is served with crackers or bread. Really nice on a charcuterie board....
Antipasto is served on crackers as an appetizer. It is absolutely delicious! Costco sells it, it could be seasonal, theirs is very good, tastes just like homemade.
