Understanding Tejas Mark 2 (Part-1) : • Tejas MK2 - The Next-G...
Tejas MK2 or the Medium Weight Fighter is being developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) with Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Defence Research and Development organisation (DRDO). It is going to be a single engine, 4.5 generation fighter aircraft. MWF will have many state of the art technologies integrated with it. It is going to be the mainstay of the IAF in future.
In Part-1 : • Tejas MK2 - The Next-G... , we discussed various aspects of Tejas MK2 or MWF. We discussed its need and utility in IAF’s arsenal. The episode tried to outline timeline of the project. We also saw how project is going as per timeline if not ahead of time. It also checked possibly of private sector participation in its production.
In this episode, we will discuss the specifications and features of upcoming MWF. What are the new things added to its design till the latest update? How will be its avionics? Mk 2 is not a medium weight fighter. It also falls into light weight category very similar to Miraj or Falcon.
Earlier version was too small to house morden systems and gives very little space for incorporation of any future tech. (In case of Tejus, these are current systems, as it was conceived decades ago.
Mk2 is also a light fighter.
Remember 4 years ago we all were complaining about delays of HAL but now with complete funding see how fast HAL is working

I think we can see all of them in the next 10 to 15 years. I have full faith in our capabilities. Our technological capabilities, will, economy, resilience and standing in the international community is not the same when we started the Tejas programme. We have come a long way. This past 20 to 30 years we have spent so much time on research and development and it is time to reap the benefits. I think I am reasonably optimistic. 👍👍👍

It is an erroneous assumption that Rafael which had its first flight in 1987 is equipped with older technologies than Tejas which will start flying in 2023.
The platform design may be older, but systems and technologies for surveillance, target detection and missiles are modified and improved every time a development takes place. To that extent Rafael is carrying the state of art systems as currently developed in France
Same with the new variants of the F16. I really think India should reconsider the co-production of the F21 variant designed for India's needs, especially the newest upgrades that make it comparable to a 5th gen fighter

@@keithhoward4069 Yes, also F-16s have been in operation for quite a while and reliability is not an issue either. If we can have Rafale and F-16 built indigenosuly (will need large orders though) that would be still be a great option, while putting the R&D focus on AMCA.

Excellent presentation on the performance of Tejas Fighters. Looks as a beautiful Bird to us and for enemies, it is a Dangerous Fighter.
Rafale is twin engine fighter with 2 times thrust than mk2 tejas (which is still on drawing board) , also Rafale is much more advanced in terms of avionics and weapons system , also Rafale can super cruise at 1.4 Mach speed without afterburners and has Thrust vectoring making it more maneuverable , 77% of the Rafale's surface area is composite and many more design aspects make it more stealthier than Teja , Dassault Rafale has Optronique secteur frontal integrated IRST and proven Thales EWS but teja IRST and EWS is still in DRDO design phase might take 5-10 yrs as per DRDO speed , Thales RBE2-AA AESA radar used on Rafale's is twice more effective in no of targets tracking and speed than Uttam AESA radar rafale has 24,500 max take of weight compared to Teja mk2 planned 17000 hence it can carry more fuel and weapons making it more combat effective now stop comparing Teja with much superior platform also its bell icon no baal icon

Well you know that Tejas is a LCA it made to replace Mig-21 fleet which is outdated including in future mirage...Tejas is not a perfect aircraft I agree...but it is enogh for us to counter our Pakistani JF-17 and other aircraft...Tejas MK-II will be there to replace mirage. Rafael is omnirole and can perform many missions not only the role of intercepter which Tejas does. And Rafael will be a game changer for us for understanding technology in aerospace industry. You need to understand that a jet is made by evolution not by just making it....in India people have very high expectations and HAL delivered it somehow after 30 long year....but till now Tejas has done good with 5000 crash free sorties which shows the efficiency and reliability in it which mig-21 never had...and these sorties are of tests flights...see for example Tomcat which had so many problems when it was inducted newly from engines to avionics everything would not work properly but as day went by they upgraded it and now it became one of the most iconic aircrafts ever. Tejas is not a world class but is enough to fulfill our needs to counter our enemies.

But the hype around these are not good for the project itself as i pointed with an example of Arjun where the army!! set a wrong example of how to set expectations. Considering same context here as response to the video, Tejas is not going to be 'better' than Rafale or a replacement in any aspect. Apple vs Apple comparison would be better.

I fear the Tejas MK2 to be under powered. It is much heavier than Mk1a but uses the same single engine configuration. The F414 engine is just marginally more powerful than F404 in the Mk1a. All other fighter jets with the same weight are having twin engines or engines with double the power output. The addition of Canards will provide extra lift but donno if it is going to be enough...

GE have made an engine with same configuration as F414 with 116KN with afterburners that could greatly enhance its capabilities even more
and the engine is GE. We couldnt develop our own engines
Without testing and asserting Tejas Mk2 capacity ,we can not predict that it will be better then Rafel ,as far cut paste information is there ,Tejas Mk2 can be better,but till that Rafel will also progress much more then present Rafel.

Too early to say so. Technologies need to mature into useable systems. Frontline troops should be able to communicate with all air and land assets live and rain down fire......in a mountainous sreas, effectively accurately and devastatingly all in a very heavy jamming environment. An aircraft that need use it's radar, it's onboard weapons should be....

These advancements are due to removal of middle man or so called agents who use to influence army procurement decisions. The trust in HAL by gov and army has boosted thier confidence and thus fundings. In next 10years you will see many innovations from HAL and DRDO. So don't forget to add HAL stocks to your portfolio.
USA still NOT cleared the ENGINE of the TEJAS so ....its a DREAM NEWS.....France never gave the RAFALE technology so the Indian DREAM JET is JUST only HALF of RAFALE in performance and we HAVE to PRAY at the FEET of the AMERICANS for the engine to FLY the TEJAS or Any Indian plane.....

Hi. I wa wondering, wouldn't it make better sense to equip Mk2 with the newer engine offered to us . It would mean a jump from 98kn to @ 117kn by the same supplier. This would imply a higher power to weight ratio which in turn means a higher weapon and fuel carrying capacity, morr power to fuel the electronics on board. In short a more potent war machine. Granted it would increase the cost. However, wouldn't that mean a more effective fighter nullifying the increase in cost. This would without a doubt, make it an incomparable fighter. Thanks for the informative video.
Simple mathematics says for a 17.5 tone tejas mk2, one 117 kn engine was planned to equip it. 98 kn engine is just for prototypes only and is severely underpowered. (Thrust to weight ration will be below 0.8 for a 98 kn engine)
The real and complete specification of mk2 has been kept secret. The engine power will be revealed in due time and it can never be a US engine. It is impossible to think that a country which is against the tejas program since the beginning will ever supply it with an engine to make the program success.
Tejas mk1 was Unsucessful only because of an underpowered US engine. The kaveri and ganga projects are now kept secret for the last decade only to avoid the evil eyes of the US on these program.

Well, you can compare them as they have some similarities, but assuming that the Tejas mk2 could be better than the Rafale is unrealistic to me.
The French aircraft is still better on many points than what HAL project for its Tejas mk2.
Moreover, this video seems to not take into account that the Rafale plateform jas evolved a lot since 2000 and that it will continue.
But it is good for India being able to build an indigenous aircraft
India should give equal importance in developing DRONES & MISSILES as future wars depend on these two.
India is doing this too, missiles are being tested on a daily basis and we are makking our own drone too

Why aren't internal fuel tank capacity isn't increased. If internal fuel capacity is increased then there will be no need of underwings tanks and that pylons can be equipped with bombs/ air to ground missiles.
Underwing tanks are nowadays used in many aircrafts as it always acts as extra fuel after primary fuel tank is empty.
Yeah, increasing main fuel tank size might led to increase in RCS of Aircraft (Specially for Tejas Mk 2). Also would lessen the space for fitting missiles. My opinion.

i am ok with the idea that teja mk 2 will be better than the raffale ,but what about the ENGINE ,what about the engine that is important it is going to be GE engine . we should try and use our own engines .

We are taking way way too much time in building a fighter aircraft, also it's very very disappointing that after so many years the country couldn't built a Afterburning turbofan engine for powering fighter aircraft, we had to rely on American GE for powering our Tejas

You have not made it clear whether the GE-414 engine will be able to give this aircraft a thrust-to-weight ratio of more than one or not. 98 KN of thrust is with the afterburner turned on. The dry thrust is only 53KN. If the aircraft has a TWR of less than one, it will be no match for Pakistani and Chinese aircraft.
